LESSON PLAN
Blackfoot Value: Being Grateful

Grade: 1 /2 Lesson Title : Blackfoot value of being grateful Duration : 45 mins

Overview of lesson

This lesson will be used to introduce the Blackfoot value of prayer, or being grateful. This lesson is the 4th of the 11 Blackfoot values the students have been learning about. P
to introducing the newest value, students will reflect on the previous three values we have learned about: being kind and compassionate, being respectful and being
independent. All students have taken different challenges to be kind, such as filling each other's buckets. Students have also been practicing their independence both at hom
and in the classroom. One of our classroom independence ‘rules’ is to try something at least twice before asking for help.
This new value will also incorporate a new classroom routine and goal. As it is about to be December, students will be practicing 18 days of gratefulness. Our final day of scho
before winter break is December 18th, so students will create a grateful journal they can write and draw in each day for 18 days. I will also be adding our 18 days of being gra
to our morning calendar, so each day I can model the different ways we can be grateful to the students.

and compassion’ and ‘respect’ and being independent.
o Point to the Blackfoot values on the board
o Have a quick 2 minute review
● Ask students what they learned in our last lesson
● Ask students how they have been practicing being kind and respectful
● Ask students how their independence goals have been going and have the kids share about their independence
● Today we are going to read a book called We are Grateful

Body ( 25min.): main activities with differentiation

● Activity:
● Read the book
● After reading the book talk about the different things they were grateful for
● Ask students if they can guess what our next value might be based on the story
○ Give students hints
■ It is something we have talked about already this year, around Thanksgiving
○ Go through student answers
● Today our new value is A atsimoyihkaan— being grateful
一 Play the audio of it being said so the kids can hear it
● Ask the students if they know what grateful means

○ Remind students that they did a page in their visual journal about things they are thankful for
○ Make a list on the board of different things the students are thankful/grateful for
● Ask students why it is important to be grateful for things
○ Have the students brainstorm why it is important and why we should remember the different things we are grateful for

○ Tell the students I am going to give them two challenges

○ Challenge 1: Our class grateful challenge
■ Show students the Room 1 is grateful for… sheet with the cut out strips that are numbered of how many days we have left in school
● Each day during calendar time we are going to brainstorm different things our class is grateful for. Miss.Lawless will write it down and we will add it to our bulletin
board so we can look everyday to see what we are grateful for! ○ Challenge 2: 18 days of being grateful at home
■ Each student will be sent home with a I am grateful for… sheet
■ Each night they will talk to their family about things they are grateful for and write it down as a family
● On the final day of school before winter break, students can get another sheet to work on during Christmas break that has a mix of things they are grateful for and th
they can do independently
● Have students give a thumbs up if they feel good about their two challenges
● For the remainder of our time before recess, students will be working in their visual journal to brainstorm the things they are grateful for
● Hand out cut out sheets with the Blackfoot word on it and have the kids make a bubble map of things they are grateful for
