FOUNDATION BORED

PILES

Bored pile is a circular, cast-in-situ reinforced

concrete pile which is used as foundations to
support high-rise buildings, bridges, heavy
industrial complexes, etc. which diverts severe
structural loads deep into a more stable soil
strata. It is design and categorize into two
types – (1) Skin Friction Piles and (2) End
Bearing Piles, depending on the soil condition
where the piles shall be constructed.

Bored piles diameter can varies from 600mm

to 3000mm and can reached an effective
drilling depth of more than 70m.

Bored piles can be installed thru different

drilling method as follows:

- Kelly Method
- CFA (Continuous Flight Auger)
Method
- Grab
- Rotary Twin System
- Front-Of-Wall Method

ADVANTAGES

- Less vibration and noise thus, Ideal for

construction near adjacent structure.

- Availability of various bored pile diameter

that conforms to any design specification.

- Able to install foundation piles even with

presence of water.

- Piles can be constructed very near to

existing wall face.

- Limitless applications of bored pile to suit

every construction site requirements.

APPLICATIONS

- Single bored piles for building foundations.

- Group piles for building and bridge

foundations.

- Raked (inclined) piles for retaining wall and

bridge foundation.

- Contiguous bored piles as temporary

support or slope protection structures.

- Secant pile wall as slope protection,

temporary retaining wall, or permanent
structures.
2) Insert casing with 3) Set up drilling rig
mechanical grab. equipment.

1) Set oscillator on
position. 4) Commence drilling
up to design toe level.

CONSTRUCTION METHODOLOGY

5) Clean pile bottom

upon drilling 7) Backfilling of empty
completion. bore hole after
concreting.

6) Install and splice 7) Tremie pipe

rebar cages. assembly and concrete
placement..

Re-Development of Overseas
Union Houses (OUH) & Change
Alley Aerial Plaza

Location:
No. 50 Collyer Quay

Client:
CLIFFORD DEVELOPMENT Pte.
Ltd.

Main Contractor:
HYUNDAI Engineering &
Construction Co., Ltd.

Workscope:
Foundation Bored Pile works

DESCRIPTION:

- The former Overseas Union

Houses is transformed and converted
into a modern 18-Storey Office Tower
with multiple basement levels. The
project also involves the conservation
and restoration of the iconic Change
Alley Aerial Plaza.

- Since a taller building is

constructed, there is a need to re-
designed and improved its foundation
structure thus, Bored Pile foundation
is applied.

MILESTONES:

- Construction of bored piles on

obstruction areas (presence of
existing H-pile foundation and old
seawall structure).

- Drilled through layers of FCCB

formation – a very hard soil strata.

Piling works

DESCRIPTION:

- Construction of podium block with

multi-level basements, and six (6)
office tower blocks with two (2)
basement carpark levels,
underground pedestrian network and
retail shops.

- Secant Pile wall works are applied

as support for the basement
excavation works, due to soft and
loose condition of under lying soil
below the worksite.

SECANT PILE WALL:

- A “top-down” construction
technique, primarily to build a sub-
structure walls and retaining walls.

- Constructed as series of bored

piles, interlocking and contiguous
drilled shaft called primary and
secondary piles (steel reinforced)
using a soft concrete to form a wall
structure when set.

MILESTONES:

- Retained an open-cut excavation

deep of approximately 25m.

- No strutting required for earth face

protection.

- Fast phase of excavation works

due to no steel struts obstruction.

- Prevent water seepage into the

worksite, providing a dry working
area.
