Arab International University Faculty of Civil Engineering Make up Final Exam Road & Traffic Engineering Date: June, 2016 (070315) Duration: 2Hours Open Book Exam Notes: Students can use only paper documents. Exchange of these documents is forbidden. ‘Assume any missing data or parameters. Question 1 (5 Points) Using an appropriate diagram, determine the number all the possible conflict points at an unsignalized intersection shown in figure below. Question 2 (10 Points) A horizontal curve is being designed on a highway. The PC is at station 1000, the design speed is 80 km/h, and a maximum superelevation of 0.06 is to be used. If the central angle of the curve is 40 degrees, design a curve for the highway by computing the radius and stationing of the Pl and PT. Question 3 (5 Points) Copy the Superelevation diagram shown in figure below and complete the missing data. Assume a 2-lane-highway with lane width 3.5m and a horizontal curve turned to right. 96m. . ? Question 4 (12 Points) Assume a vertical curve joining a -3% grade with a +4% grade on a highway. ~ Determine the length of this curve if the design speed of the highway is 100 km/h. ~ If the station at PVC (point of curvature) is 4000, and its elevation is 750.00 m (at tangent intersection): Find elevations and station for PVI (point of vertical intersection) and PVT (point of vertical tangency). Find elevation on the curve at main stations if the distances between them equal to 100m. Find elevation and station for lowest point on curve. Question 5 (6 Points) A silane divided highway (in both directions) is on rolling terrain with free flow speed FFS=90 km/h. The peak-hour factor is 0.85, and the directional peak-hour volume is 2000 vehicles per hour. There are 6% large trucks, 4% buses, and no recreational vehicles. The driver population adjustment factor is estimated as 0.95. Determine the level of service LOS. Question 6 (12 Points) The intersection shown below has three phases, as follows: Phase A serves north-south through and right traffic, Phase B serves north-south left turns only, and Phase C serves east-west left, through, and right movements. The hourly flows at the intersection are as shown in table below. Assume that: Lost time per Phase is equal to 3.5 s/phase and Saturation flow rates are as follows: s(TH +RT) = 1300 veh/h/lane, s(TH) = s(RT) =1600 veh/h/lane, s(LT) =1100 veh/h/lane ~ Using the Webster model, determine the optimal cycle length, Co, ~ Determine the effective green time for the phases.
