Assume any missing data or parameters.
Question 1 (10 Points)
A horizontal curve is being designed on a highway. The Pl is at station 1500, the
design speed is 80 km/h, and a maximum superelevation of 0.06 is to be used.
If the central angle of the curve is 30 degrees, design a curve for the highway
by computing the radius and stationing of the PC and PT.
Question 2 (6Points)
The speeds of 5 vehicles were measured with radar at the midpoint of 0.5 km
section of roadway. The speeds of vehicles were 66, 70, 73, 82and 85 km/h,
Assuming all vehicles were travelling at constant speed over this section,
calculate the time-mean speed and space-mean speed.
Question 3 (12 Points)
Assume a vertical curve joining a +3.2% grade with a -2.3% grade on a rural
arterial highway. - Determine the length of this curve if the design speed of the
highway is 100 km/h.
- If the station at PVC (point of curvature) is 2000, and its elevation is 900 m (at
tangent intersection): Find elevations and station for PVI (point of vertical
intersection) and PVT (point of vertical tangency). Find elevation on the curve
at the station equal 800. Find elevation and station for highest point on curve.
Question 4 (10 Points)
A four-lane divided highway (in both directions) is on rolling terrain with 8
access point per kilometer has 3.4m lane width, with 1.8 m shoulders on theright side and 1.2m shoulders on the left side. The peak-hour factor is 0.80, and
the directional peak-hour volume is 2200 vehicles per hour. There are 6% large
trucks, 2% buses, and no recreational vehicles. The driver population
adjustment factor is estimated as 0.95. No posted studies are available, but the
posted speed limit is 80 km/h. Determine the level of service LOS?
Question 5 (12 Points)
The intersection shown beside has three
phases, as follows:
Phase A serves east-west through and right
traffic,
Phase B serves east-west left turns only, and
Phase C serves north-south left, through,
and right movements.
The hourly flows at the intersection are as
shown below:
Assume that
(1) Lost time per phase is equal to 4 s/phase
(2) Saturation flow rates are as follows:
s(TH +RT) = 1200 veh/h/lane, s(TH) = s(RT) =1400 veh/h/lane
s(LT) =1000 veh/h/lane
~ Using the Webster model, determine the optimal cycle length, Co.
- Determine the effective green time for the phases.
