Abutment Backfilling of Culvert And Bridge

1Application Scope
This explanation is suitable for backfill of bridge and culvert abutment of AA project.
2. Specification Reference

3. Construction Preparation
3.1 Technical preparation
3.1.1 Inspect the structures to be covered and get approval from engineer. Clear all the debris in
the foundation pit.
3.1.2 Testing the filling materials and check the testing result.
3.1.3 Make the technical and safety explanation to the subcontractor and construction team to
ensure the construction quality and safety operation.
3.2 Site preparation
3.2.1 The backfilling for culvert and bridge abutment shall be done according to the related shop
drawing and technical requirement under the letter CCCC(E)/AA/BR-183.
3.2.2 Construction machine shall be ready for the work.
3.3 Main machine:
Small vibration compactor, roller, dump trucks, testing equipment, safety sign board.
4. Technical and Construction Requirement
4.1.1 The backfilling material shall be mixing material of scoria and clay or soil-stone, which
satisfy the requirement under the letter CCCC(E)/AA/BR-226.
4.1.2 The quantity of material shall be calculated according to the backfilling length, width and
bench excavation.
4.1.3 The backfilling scope shall be decided according to requirement of the design and
specification or by supervisor engineer. The backfilling scope shall be marked by lime and ready
for work.
4.2 Technical Requirement
4.2.1 After the strength of concrete or masonry body shall be reached 75% of design strength, the
backfilling work could be done.
4.2.2 The backfilling shall be done layer by layer with thickness of 20cm. when the small
compactor is used, the backfilling thickness shall be not more than 15cm. The backfilling height
shall be marked on the abutment or other place to control the filling thickness.
4.2.3 The compaction backfilling shall have the enough spaces. It is recommended to use the
small compactor at the bottom if the space is not enough and heavy roller at the sufficient spaces
area. The small vibration compactor shall be used in the scope of 1m from abutment in order to
avoid the huge earth pressure on the abutment.
4.2.4 The material shall be spread evenly and compacted layer by layer. The compaction density
shall be tested for each layer at each side. The testing frequency shall be at least 2 points per
1000m2 or less than 1000m2. The test points shall be increased if necessary.
4.2.5 The compaction density of backfilling shall satisfy the design requirement. At the same
time, the drainage at longitudinal and traverse direction shall be prepared well.
4.2.6 The next backfilling layer shall be done only before getting approval of supervise engineer.
5. Other Requirement
5.1 The compaction density shall not less than 96% for backfilling of abutment of bridge and
culvert.
5.2 The filter layer with aggregate material or coarse sand shall be prepared at the opening of
weep hole.
5.3 The backfilling shall be done symmetrically at both side of the culvert. Take more attention
for the bottom of the pipe culvert.
5.4 The backfilling of culvert at the close of the abutment or wing wall shall be taken care and
also the abutment shall not be damaged during the compaction.
5.5 When the backfill have reached to the road bed, the filling for culvert shall be done at the
same time with the subgrade.
5.6 The loosing spreading thickness of first layer shall be 30cm on the top of slab and
compaction shall be done by small compactor. After the compaction layer shall be 20cm. the
heavy machine and dump truck could pass only when the filling height exceed 1m.
5.7 If the filling height is greater than 1m, the bench shall be excavated and filled subgrade by
suitable material.(see the following figure)

6. Quality Control
6.1 In order to ensure the quality, the backfilling shall follow the construction procedure and
specifications. Each construction shall be self-tested and inspected by supervisor engineer. After
the work get approval from engineer, the next layer could be done.
6.2 The preparation work shall be done well and compile the construction methodology to ensure
the quality assurance system. During the construction, prepare the machine deployment schedule
and maintain the machine regularly.
6.3 All the material shall be tested by center laboratory. When the material is proved to satisfy
the requirement of specification and get approval from supervisor engineer, the material could be
used for construction.
6.4 Make the record for material testing data.
