Strategy Objectives
To contribute to reduction of communicable diseases
and increase community resilience for the 145,000
Burundian refugees in Nyarugusu and Nduta.

Expected results
• At least 145,000 Burundian refugees in Nyarugusu and Nduta are
enabled /access to the hygiene promotion activities and practice
• At least 145,000 Burundian refugees in Nyarugusu and Nduta are
enabled to practice safer hygiene practices in a dignified and culturally
appropriate manner
• At least 145,000 Burundian refugees in Nyarugusu and Nduta have
access to hygiene enabling items like soap, jerry cans, buckets, basins,
as well as Menstruation Hygiene Materials (MHM), etc.
PHP strategic activities

Hygiene Promotion Methods
• Develop participatory tools to be used, example:
drama/theatre groups; Child-to-Child, etc.
• Conduct Household visits for hygiene promotion
• Conduct community hygiene sessions
• Conducting separated FGDs
• Conducting mass campaigns
• Demonstration of use of WASH facilities.
• Use games and flash cards.
Key PHP Messaging:
• Hand washing with soap at critical time
• Promote safe excreta disposal practices.

Social Mobilization
• Social Mobilization entails close collaboration with
the Protection, Gender, communication and MEAL
teams
• It focus on building confidence, trust and respect,
increasing knowledge base, and enabling
community members to participate, and become
more proactive with regard to their own health

Social Mobilization Act..
• Support in raising beneficiary awareness of Oxfam
programming and services provided.
• Ensuring better participation in community
meetings
• Sensitize community about the project activities

• Mobilize, interact and dialogue with individuals

special needs and their vulnerabilities.

each phase of program implementation.
• Distribution of NFI for hygiene promotion.
Public Health Innovation
• Entails Involving the community in designing and
constructing children user friendly latrines.
• New latrines support groups (composed of 8
families per latrine) and champions (1 carer and 1
child per latrine) shall be facilitated to establish
monitoring and reward system through competition
of best utilized toilet.
Monitoring
• Post Distribution and Monitoring
• Conduct monitoring, daily, weekly and monthly
with Volunteers
• Daily monitoring of WASH infrastructures (at HH
latrines. Bath shelters, waste pits, tippy taps),
water points
• Weekly meeting with staff (incentive workers)
• Water use at household survey
• FGD with different groups
• Involve hygiene clubs in monitoring of activities
Evaluation
• Baseline and End Line KAP (Knowledge, Attitudes,
and Practices) Survey
• Monthly WASH surveys will be conducted to
calculate actual volumes of water consumed by
families and advise on water storage to maintain
safe water chain.
PHP Exit Strategy:
• Complete ongoing emergency response activities
as planned
• Work closely with other agencies to ensure follow
up as a future exit strategy.
• Responsibility hand over to partners (TWESA).
• Provide Technical PHP Capacity Building to
TWESA
• For Nduta a partner will be identified and analysed
before the handover of activities
• Establish links and share learning with others
partners and donors to influence medium to longer
term strategies.
