KINETIC THEORY OF GASES

1. A vessel of volume 0,125 m3 contains hydrogen gas at pressure 150 kPa and temperature 350
K. Detremine the quantity of the gas in mol and kg. R = 8,31 J/mol K , molar mass = 2 g/mol

2. The volume of a fixed mass of helium gas at 546 K and pressure 114 cmHg is 2,67 x 10 -3 m3.
Assume that the gas behaves as an ideal gas. Determine the volume of the gas at STP

3. A vessel contains 6,4 kg of oxygen gas at pressure 4,2 atm. Determine the pressure if the gas
is replaced with 6,6 kg of carbon dioxide at the same temperature. Molar mass O 2 = 32 g/mol,
C = 12 g/mol.

4. An empty box has a volume of 110 cm3. Determine the mass of air in the box at 293 K and
pressure 73 cmHg. The density of air at STP is 1,29 kg/m3.

5. Determine the total average kinetic energy of the molecules in 3 mol of an ideal gas at 300 K.
Assume that molecules only have translational kinetic energy ; R = 8,31 J/mol K

6. Air is composed of oxygen, nitrogen and a few other gases. Assume that all these gases are
independent of one another and behave like ideal gas. If oxygen molecules have rms speed of
460 m/s at certain temperature, determine the rms speed of nitrogen molecules at the same
temperature. Molar mass O2 = 32 g/mol ; N2 = 28 g/mol.

7. A vessel contains air of mass 3 kg at 1818 kPa. Air is pumped into the vessel until the pressure
becomes 2121 kPa. Assume that the air temperature remains unchanged. Determine the mass of air
pumped into the vessel.

8. A vessel of volume 2 m3 containe atoms of a gas of mass 0,8 kg at pressure 25 kPa. Determine the rms
speed of the atoms of the gas if the gas temperature is constant.
