1. What is the secret life of Walter Mitty?


The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" tells the story of the aging Walter Mitty on a trip
into town with his overbearing wife, Mrs. Mitty. Walter is inept at many things; he
is an absent-minded driver, he can't handle simple mechanical tasks, and he forgets
things easily.

2. What is the main conflict and theme of "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty"?
The main conflict is an aging man who though inept and bumbling in real life, passes
his day with a series of fantasies in which he takes on the role of any number of
powerful, bold, and decisive men.
The themes are version vs reality, dissatisfaction, marriage, identity, men, and
masculinity).

3. What are the characteristics of Walter Mitty?


He is an old man who is fearful, unskillful, cowardly, bumbling, and inept.

4. Describe the relationship between Mr. and Mrs. Mitty.


Mr.Mitty seems controlled by his wife, Mrs.Mitty. She dominates over her husband
and makes him lose his own choice and prestige as a husband.

5. Describe the interactions Walter Mitty has with the other characters?
- Walter Mitty – characters in real life: Walter's interactions with his wife tend to be
flat, unresponsive, etc. Also, Walter is the source of derision and easily bullied.
- Walter Mitty – his imagination characters: In Mr. Mitty's imagination, Mr. Mitty is
considered as a gentleman of honor and courage. Everyone in his imagination has
great respect for him.

6. What role does Walter Mitty's wife play in his fantasies?


Walter Mitty's wife does not play any role in any of his fantasies because this is
suggestive. His fantasies are a means of escape from his hectoring wife. He has a
"secret life" because his fantasies are kept a secret mainly from her.

7. What is completely different about his role in this daydream? Why would he wish
to be in such a situation?
In Walter Mitty’s daydream, he is a powerful, bold, and decisive man, while in real
life, he is an aging man stuck in the day where he isn't so much piloting anything, has
no honor, inept and bumbling.

8. How is Mitty’s dream life drastically different from his real one? Why do you think
he has so many daydreams? Why do you think he choose to daydream?
Mitty’s characters in real life and dream life are drastically different. He starts
dreaming because his life is not as well as he taught and knows there’s nothing he can
do to change it. That’s why he has so many dreams and only choose to daydream.

9. What are the common elements in all of Walter Mitty's daydreams?


The common elements are Mitty’s characters and people’s treatment of him.

10. What brings Walter Mitty back to reality during his various daydreams?
Mitty is brought back to reality when his wife nags at him not to drive so fast when
they are on their way into Waterbury to run errands.

11. Is Walter Mitty considered mad ? Is he a psychopath?


No, he is not. It's similar to a desperate and hopeless man.

12. How does James Thurber use fantasy to convey ideas about reality in "The Secret
Life of Walter Mitty“?
Thurber's use of fantasy is a reflection of reality. For Walter Mitty, the need to retreat
to fantasy is triggered by the conditions around him. Thurber uses fantasy as a way to
talk all about Mitty's world. For example, in the conformist world around Mitty,
fantasy favors him to maintain individuality.

13. What issues/phenomena that the writer would like to address in the story?
Sometimes, people may feel guilty about what happened in their life, and they hope
they can make it better. However, when they realize there’s nothing to do, then people
start dreaming.
