Introduction
In today’s world the key concept of communication system is the real time
monitoring and control through the Internet of Things (IoT) network. Internet of
Things (IoT) network is a combination of embedded systems and smart sensors
which work in collaboration via the internet to achieve a common user-defined
objective. An engine control unit (ECU) is a type of electronic control unit that
monitors the inbuilt sensors and controls a series of actuators on an internal
combustion engine to ensure optimal engine performance. A car engine monitoring
system or check engine light or Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) uses the ECU
output to achieve following two objectives;
proactive maintenance and reactive maintenance
The proactive care mode keeps the track of periodic maintenance based on the time
and the mileage of the vehicle. The reactive maintenance includes real time
monitoring of the ECU based sensors and the generation of alerts for the customers
on an android application. The status of vehicle monitored by the car engine fault
detector is also accessible to the workshop and dealer ship stores so that they can

coordinate with the car owners to schedule the vehicular maintenance service as
and when required. One of the key features of the detection system is its non-
invasive installation which increases the acceptability of the product for the target
market.
Literature review
In 1980, an accomplishment for car viability met up in shape of On-board PCs, On-
Board Diagnostics (OBD). These control unit or PCs would screen the fuel infusion
systems and would have fundamental limits and alterations, consequently, were the
start of something remarkable to come. In 1982, The General Motors Company
were first to construct an interface in their vehicle, known as Assembly Line
Communications Link (ALCL). By 1986, the ALCL, known as the ALDL,
Assembly Line Diagnostic Link, Terminal Identification for On Board Diagnostics
Port, had shaped into a boundlessly improved system, Using the Universal
Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter, abnormality in correspondence joins had been
settled. The first On Board Diagnostic interface included twelve information
channels, nine of which were related with a line or some similarity thereof. Each
line had a limit and conveyed utilizing a non-standard convention. An illustration
depiction of the primary prepared diagnostics port terminals.
A typical practice which is largely followed in vehicle world is the 'intermittent
vehicle maintenance'. In intermittent vehicle maintenance, the vehicle should
experience the occasional service and maintenance its everyday practice. At the
point when to get a vehicle overhauled, is commonly chosen by either a predefined
time or mileage covered via vehicle. For instance, it is commonly encouraged to get
vehicle adjusted inside a half year of the last administration date or relying on
mileage like travelling 10000 kilometers, whichever happens first. Presently, the
issue with 'intermittent vehicle maintenance' is that no one is certain if any part or
oils should be adjusted or supplanted. This ordinarily prompts parts or greases,
which are as of now in great condition, getting changed or overhauled. Another
issue, which is commonly confronted is that however booked 'intermittent vehicle
maintenance' is still some time away, there is some issue with any piece of the
vehicle, which needs prompt administration. 'Occasional vehicle maintenance' can't
take care of this issue, and the best way to think about this is in the wake of stalling
of that breaking down part.
Problem statement
Having a vehicle, nowadays, is a necessity of life, that having care and comfort for
daily commute. However, with ease, it can cause mental suffering in case of any fault. The
fault can occur in any situation, such as in the mid of a desert during a long journey or in
the morning when the owner tries to alert it. Therefore, if would be good if, in advance, the
fault can be diagnosed. Carefully consequently, in this project, we aim to build a fault
monitoring system that can detect any possible fault, and inform the owner via a mobile
text. For this we will utilize mainly ECU, Bluetooth and GSM.

Motivation
In this modern era, most of the people own cars. So, they face some issues too, like
fault in engine which could be in any part of the engine which could be more

severe or less but people just get to know by the Malfunction indication light
(MIL) that there is some without knowing about the nature of the fault. Firstly, we
want to make life easy and comfortable for them by providing them with such
automated solution which provide them all necessary information about
encountered error in the car’s engine. Secondly, we want to people to spend less
and get more by providing them very cost-efficient module.
Objectives
The main objectives of the project are:
1. Fault diagnosis.
2. Real-time monitoring.

Design methodology

Project Application
A car engine monitoring system or check engine light or malfunction indicator
lamp (MIL), is a automotive that a computerized engine-management system uses
to indicate a malfunction. Found on the instrument panel of most automobiles. This
system is install all in the latest and luxury cars.
