Arjuna's Penance

This skillfully carved rock is the largest bas - relief sculpture in


the world. It gets its name from the figure of an ascetic who is
believed to be Arjuna, the hero of Mahabharata, doing penance
to obtain a boon from Lord Siva. However, there are others who
think that the figure is actually Bhagiratha who entreated Siva
to let the river Ganges flow over the earth.

Five Rathas

There are five monolithic temples, each created in different


style. They are also known as Pancha Pandava Rathas, and four
of the Rathas are supposed to have scooped out of a single rock
formation.

Tiger's Cave

It is 4 kms north of the main monument complex. It was an


open air theatre, where cultural programs are held. Though it is
very near the sea, the place is serene and calm.

The Shore Temple

This is one of the oldest temples in South India. It belongs to


the 8th Century AD and is a good example of the first phase of
structural temples constructed in Dravidian style. The
monuments are flood lit at night and so it is possible to enjoy
their beauty after sunset.

Kanchipuram (66kms)

West of Mamallapuram. This temple town was once the capital


of the Pallava dynasty. The silk sarees produced here are
renowned throughout the world.

Vedanthangal (53kms)

One of the major water bird sanctuaries in India. The birds


migrate here every year from November to February, from all
over the world.

Crocodile Bank (14kms)

Not far from Mamallapuram, 40 km south of Chennai city, this


crocodile breeding and research centre was set up in 1976 by

wildlife conservationist Romulus Whittaker under the Madras
Crocodile Bank Trust and is now managed by a Board of
Trustees. This bank was started to protect India's dwindling
crocodile population and to preserve the Irula (Snake
catching), tribe's way of life. It occupies an area of 3.2
hectares and has already produced more than 6,000 crocodiles.
There is also a snake farm where anti - venom is produced.
Several species of Indian and African Crocodiles and Alligators
bred in captivity are kept here in open pools. The snake venom
extractions are a great attraction to the visitors and it helps the
Irulas (tribe) to maintain their way of life.

Muttukadu

Just North of Kovalam, this is a fine picnic spot. It is also an


ideal location for boating and water sports. TTDC runs a boat
house here.

OOTY

AVALANCHE

A break in the words at Cairn Hill presents an Avalanche of


views, Strangely enough of a country about 25 km from Ooty
known as the Avalanche. It is on the way to the upper- Bhavani
from Ooty via Emerald camp. The gorgeous scenery at every

the top of the hill at Avalanche give a magnificent site of the
Avalanche valley and reservoir.

Botanical Garden

Mr.Mc.Ivor completed the layout of Govt Botanical garden


during the year 1857-1867. It covers an area of 22 hectares,
ascending the slopes of the hill at an elevation of 2400-2500
meters above MSL. It is a treasure house of temperate flora,
consisting of flowering trees, beautiful shrubs, colorful lilies,
bulbous planets enchanting orchids, curious cacti and
succulents, pleasing pteridophytes, breath taking glass house
plants and charming annuals with bright colors.

Dodda Betta

The eminent range of heights which runs North-South in the


middle of the plateau, reaches its heights point at Dodda Betta
at about 8 kms East-South east from Ooty. Its height is 2636
meters. Dodda Betta is the highest peak of the Niligiris district.
The snow down hill(2530M), the Club Hill(2448M) and the Elk
Hill(2466M) along with the Dodda Betta, form among
themselves the impressive Udhagamandalam valley.

Kalhatty Water Falls

It is about 13 Kms from Ooty on the Ooty-Mysore Road via


Kalhatty Ghats. Best time to visit this falls is September and
November. The fall is about 40 m high. This is among the best
places for trekking.

Ketti Valley View

Located on the road to Connoor, which is considered to be the


second largest valley in the world. This idyllic spot is a cluster

of tiny villages that extended to the plains of Coimbatore and
Mysore plateau.

Lake-Boat House

This Lake known famously as “Ooty Lake”. The lake was


constructed in 1823-1825 by Mr. John Sullivan, the first
collector of Ooty. A wide range of Boats like Pedal Boat, Row
Boat, Aqua Bike etc. are available. Dancing cars, Mini Train are
added attractions here.

Pykara

The Pykara is the largest river in the District. It is considered


very sacred by the Todas. The Pykara river rises at Mukurthi
peak. It passes through hilly tract, generally keeping to North
and turns to West after reaching the Plateau’s edge. It gets
down majestically in a series of cascades; and the last two falls
of 55 meters and 61 meters are known as Pykara falls. They
are at about 20 kms from Ooty. A wonderful boat house is
maintained at Pykara Dam by the TTDC.

RAMESWARAM

Agnitheertham

The calm, shallow water spread of the sea, present hardly 100
meters in front of the magnificent temple Gopuram is
reverentially held sacred. A dip in the Agnitheertham is
supposed to remove the sins of the pilgrims. The other
Theerthams in and around the temple are also important for
pilgrims.

Annai Indira Gandhi Bridge

The 2.2 km, Length Bridge connecting the Rameswaram Island


and the mainland is the longest bridge in India constructed
over a bay. It also called as Pamban Bridge. Similarly the
railway bridge connecting the island is noted for its unique
opening to pass the ship through the sea.

Erwadi

The tomb of Sultan Ibrahim Syed Aulia, who came from Arabia
via Cannanore is about 800 years old. Pilgrims from far off
countries like Srilanka, Malaysia etc are visiting the tomb.
Santhanakoodu festival is celebrated in the month of February-
March attracts thousand of pilgrims.

Five Faced Hanuman Temple

Hanuman is adorned with senthooram here. The stone said to


have used to construct the floating bridge Sethu Bandanam
could be seen here.

Mandapam & Pamban

Lying on the Ramanathapuram – Rameswaram National


Highway and just 19 kms before Rameswaram lies this sleepy
costal village of Mandapam. Prior to the 1914 train service
linking the mainland with Rameswaram, boats were the only
mode of transport to ship the pilgrims on their journey to
Rameswaram. It is possible to take a boat for a cruise through
the mangrove marshes to Kurusadai Island.

Oriyur

Oriyur is one of the most revered pilgrim centers for Christians


the world over as it is home to the martyrdom of St. John De
Britto, a Portuguese Jesuit better known as ‘Arul Anandar’. It
was in this place that the saint was beheaded in 1693 and the
sand dune is said to have turned red, believed to be stained by
the blood of the saint. Here, one can see a magnificent shrine
with its Portuguese facade that contains a captivating statue of
Arul Anandar offering his neck in humble submission to the
executioner.

YERCAUD

Anna Park

Anna Park is a garden near the lake. A park for children with a
few slides for the kiddies to play around is just next door to
Anna Park.

Bear’s Cave

It is situated near the Northern Bungalow on the way to


Servarayan temple. A huge cave formation beside a fantastic
bungalow that was supposed to play home for the bears. It is
an important tourist spot worth the visit. This is also a private
property and since the owner has the kindness to keep it open
for tourists, you have to do him a good turn by keeping the
place clean and not destroying plants.

Big Lake

The first thing that strikes your eye when you are in Yercaud is
the Big Lake. The main attraction of Yercaud is the cool lake
surrounded by greenery all around. It is the biggest lake of the
hill station.

Botanical Garden

Home to thousands of green scientific species beside strange


plants like pitcher plant that a person from the plains is sure
dying to see and learn about. It has a green house and a
orchidarium. Yercaud is also the home to the famous kurinji
flower. The specialty of this flower is that the tree blooms once
in twelve years.

Boat House

The cool and pleasant climate attracts tourist through the year.
Boating in the Yercaud lake is enchanting and refreshing. The
Anna Park near by is a good picnic spot. Another place of
interest is the “Lady’s Seat”. It provides a breath taking view
of the winding Ghat roads.

Lady’s Seat

One of the best views that Yercaud promises. You get a


panoramic view of the Ghats and all the distance vehicle
dwindling their way in and out of trees along the winding Ghat
road. You can have a closer view of the planes below with the
help of telescope mounted at the Lady’s seat.

Pagoda Point

Pagoda Point or Pyramid Point named after the ancient


pyramidal cairns were found here. Around the ridges of the
crest or four cairns stones resembling temple towers
( Pagodas) in the centre of the open space is a shrine dedicated
to two anionic stones held scared by local mamaiyalis.

The Servarayan Kaveri Amman Temple

A Malaiyalai tribal temple dedicated to Lord Servarayan also


known as Ramaswamy. It is located in a narrow and dark cave
on the tallest peak (5,342’) on the Servarayan Mountain. The
annual festival held in May is very popular and attracts
thousands of malayali pilgrims .The mouth of the cave is built
up like a Hindu shrine. The God Servarayan and Goddess Kaveri
representing the Sevarai Hills and Kaveri River respectively and
seated in the temple.

Gandhi Memorial

This memorial for the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi has
been built on the spot where the urn containing his ashes was
kept for the public to pay their last respects, before immersing

at the confluence of the three seas. This suns rays fall on the
memorial through a narrow irifice exactly on the spot where
the ashes were kept, only once a year on October 2nd
(Mahatma’s Birthday). Truly a testimony to modern

Kamaraj Memorial

Regarded as the “King Maker of India” Kamaraj influensed


many political events in the country. From a humble back
ground he rose to become the chief minister of Tamilnadu
through sheer hard work and political acumen. As a tribute to
the freedom fighter and perunthalaivar, this mani mandapam
was opened on 02/10/2000.

Government Museum

The Govt Museum is situated on the beach road with collection


of sculptured artifacts and crafts of south Indian temples is one
of the must see places are here.

Mathur Hanging Bridge

This bridge has become a place of tourist importance and


hundreds of tourists visit this place. This is situated in Mathur ,
hamlet of Aruvikkarai revenue village in Thiruvattar panchayat
Union,. The bridge has been constructed at Mathur across the
river Parazhiyar at a cost of Rs 12.90 Lakhs and the trough
canal (Pattanamkal canal) on the bridge carries water for
irrigation from one side of a hill to the other side of a hill. The
trough has a height of seven feet with a width of seven feet six
inches. The canal is being shouldered by 28 huge pillars. By the
unrelated efforts of late Thiru.K.Kamaraj, the former Chief
Minister of Tamil Nadu, this canal was constructed as a drought
relif measure and for the development of agriculture in
Vilavancode and Kalkulam Taluks. The District Administration
has recently put up a staircase from top to the bottom of the

bridge and also built a children’s park and bathing platforms
over here.

Suchindram

The Thanumalayan Temple here is repository of art treasurers.


Musical Pillars and huge 18 feet Hanuman Statue are the proof
of the artistic skill of the time. This unique temple is dedicated
to the Trimurthys Vishnu, Siva and Brahma. Two chief
attractions are the gigantic Hanuman and Vinayaki (Female
Vinayaka) relief carving.

Sun rise and Sunset

Sunrise can be seen in Kanyakumari through out the year at


Bay of Bengal. Sunset can be seen from view tower though out
the year except the month of June, July and August.

Swami Vivekananda Rock Memorial

This grand memorial to the great Indian philosopher Swami


Vivekananda is on one of the twin rocks jutting out from the
sea about 200 meters offshore. There is a Dhanya Mandapam
where one can sit in a serene atmosphere and Meditate. Ferry
services are available to reach the memorial.

Thiruvalluvar Statue

Built on the lines of the “Statue of Liberty” in America, this 133


feet tall statue commemorates the 133 chapters of the
“Thirukkural” the composition of the Tamil savant-poet
Tiruvalluvar. The statue has been raised over a rock situated
adjacent to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial. The result of the
craftsmanship of over 5000 sculptors, this modern day
architectural marvel is faithful to Dravidian sculptural details.

KERALA

Cherry Palace

It is also known as Dutch Palace, built by the Portuguese and


presented to the Raja of Kochi in 1555 A.D. It acquired the
present name after 1663 when the Dutch carried out
extensions and repairs in the palace. It is interesting to note
that at no time did the Portuguese or Dutch actually stay
here. Its interiors are decorated with murals from the
Ramayana and there are some lively displays of royal
costumes and palanquins.

Jewish Synagogue

Situated In MATTANCHERRY the Synagogue was built in 1568


AD. The Great Scrolls of the Old Testament, the copper plates
in which the grants of privilege made by the Kochi rulers were
recorded and the exquisite Chinese hand-painted tiles are of
interest.

ST. Francis Church

Located at Fort Kochi this Protestant church was originally


built by the Portuguese in 1510 AD and is believed to be the
oldest church built by the Europeans in India. lt is here the
remains of the inveterate traveler, Vasco da Gama were
initially buried and 14 years later, his mortal remains were
taken to Portugal .

Santa Cruz Basilica Church

St.Francis Assissi church popularly knows as


Naduvileppalli,the most beautiful and old church in Ernakulam
city,the blend of Portuguese and Kerala style of
architecture.The unique feature churche's roof is that the
entire hyper bolic para bloid shell roof rests only on the
centre pillars on the either sides.It has completed 179th year
existence....Hundreds of people come here at odd times to sit
in the quiteness of the church to commune with god.

Fort Kochi- The Chinese Fishing nets that line the sea-front
and exhibit a mechanical method of catching fish by local
fishermen in Fort Kochi. Said to have been brought from
China by traders of Kubala Khan's Court, they are used at high
tide.

Bolghatty Palace

Bolghatty Palace is situated in Bolghatty Island a narrow


palm-fringed Island easily accessible from the mainland. The
Palace was built by the Dutch in 1744. Later, it became the
seat of the British Resident and today this has been converted
into a hotel run by the KTDC.

Vallarpadam Church

The Basilica of Our Lady of Vallarpadam


adds another landmark to its growing
reputation with the completion of 20
stations that will depict the 20 mysteries
of the rosary. The 20 stations will features
the mysteries that are celebrated by
Catholics all over the world. These include
the Joyous Glorious, Sorrowful Mysteries
and the Mysteries of Light that were added to the original by
Pope John Paul II. The Vallarpadam Church, which was
already a national pilgrim centre, was raised to the status of a
Basilica on the basis of a request submitted by Archbishop
Daniel Acharuparampil of Varappuzha in December 2003.The
Vallarpadam church was bestowed a special status by Pope
Leo XIII in 1888. In 1951, it was declared a pilgrim centre.

Hill Palace Museum

Hill Palace Museum is situated 12 km away from Eranakulam


on the Eranakulam Chottanikkara route.Different types of
sculptures, collection of rare coins,old weapons, manuscripts
in ancient scripts and collection from Kochi Royal Family are
exhibited here. Tourist may also visit the Deer Park situated
there. Horse riding facility is also available. The Parishith
Thampuran Musueum situated at the Durbar Hall Ground
together with its collection were transferred to Hill Palace
Museum in 1997.

Willingdon Island

A man-made island created from the material dredged while


deeping Kochi Port. Situated between the main land

Emakulam and the old town Mattancherry and separated by
the backwaters. Willingdon Island is an important part of
Kochi. The Govt. of India Tourist Office, the Southern Naval
Command Headquarters, the Seaport, Naval Airport, Railway

M. N. F. Gallery Of Paintings & Sculptures

The centre for Visual Arts and Gallery Paintings & Sculptures
is situated at Edappally about l0km from Emakulam and
located next to Museum of Kerala History. It houses about
two hundred original paintings of recognized Indian masters,
both contemporary and of the past. There is also a large
collection of modern sculptures in marble, bronze, granite
etc.

WAYANAD

Pookot Lake

Set in a beautiful valley and surrounded by evergreen forests


and wooded hills, Pookote is one of Waynad’s top visitor draws.
This natural lake near Lakkidi is just a short distance off the
National Highway 212. it has been developed as a recreational
centre having boating facilities, children’s park, shop for
souvenirs and species and a fresh water aquarium. Replete

Sentinel rock falls

Locally known as Soochipara, this is a very popular leisure

Relatively smaller than Sentinel rock, and rather less
frequented Kanthanampara and its surroundings are none the
less very pleasant. An easy hike away from the main road, it’s
perfect for picnics.

Sunrise Valley

As the name indicates, Sunrise Valley is a great place to watch


the rising and setting sun set amidst dramatic mountain

This large irrigation based dam site is set amidst picturesque


surroundings. It is another fine venue for picnics.

Pazhassi Park

A good recreational site has a children’s play area and boating


facilities set on the Mananthavady River.

Kuruva Island

The Kuruva Island with 950 acres of green forest lies on one of
the tributaries of the river Kabini. This calm and peaceful island
is home to a variety of birds, butterflies and orchids.

Museum Complex

The Napier Museum: Built in the 19th century, the Indo -


saracenic structure boasts a "natural" air conditioning system
and houses a rare collection of archaeological and historic
artifacts, bronze idols, ancient ornaments, a temple chariot and
ivory carvings. The use of plastic is banned in the museum

Sree Chithra Art Gallery: Located near the Napier Museum, this
art gallery displays select paintings of Raja Ravi Varma,
Svetlova and Nicholas Roerich and exquisite works from the

Bali.

The Zoological Park

One of the first zoos in India, it is located in a well-planned


botanical garden. With huge trees like frangipani and jacaranda

Just 8 km from the city, this is a favorite haunt of sunset
watchers. The beach is adjacent to the Thiruvananthapuram

Akkulam Tourist Village

A picnic spot with boating facilities, Akkulam is a place children


flock to. It has a well equipped children's park and a paddle
pool. There is a swimming pool for adults too.

Vizhinjam Rock Cut Cave(17 km)

There are rock cut sculptures of the 18th century in the cave
temple at Vizhinjam. The granite cave here encloses a one-
celled shrine with a loose sculpture of Vinandhara
Dakshinamurthi. The outer wall of the cave depicts half
complete reliefs of the Hindu God Shiva with Goddess Parvathi.

Koyikkal Palace, Nedumangad (18 km)

Located on the way to the Ponmudi hill station and the


Courtallam waterfalls, this ancient palace dates back to the
15th century. Here you can see a double storied traditional
Nalukettu building with slanting gabled roofs, an inner
courtyard and museums of folklore and numismatics set up by
the Department of Archeology.

The Folklore Museum set up in 1992 is a treasure house of


quaint musical instruments, occupational implements,
household utensils, models of folk arts etc. Displayed in the
Koyikkal Palace, they focus attention on the cultural
background of the State.

The Numismatics Museum houses rare and historically valuable


coins denoting the trade relations of the State.

Sree Mahadeva Temple

Situated in Kazhakuttom, this ancient temple is believed to


date back to the 14th century. Another old temple in the
district is the Mitramandapuram Temple on the outskirts of the
city.

VARKALA

Varkala is a seaside resort and spa. It is also an important


Hindu centre of pilgrimage. The final resting place of the great
social reformer, Sree Narayana Guru, is near Varkala, atop a
hill called Sivagiri. High cliffs with mineral springs rise
majestically from the coastline. According to a myth, sage
Narada was approached by a group of mendicants who

landed was subsequently named Varkala. The mendicants were
directed by Narada to offer their prayers in the newly created
place by the seashore. The place where they prayed for
redemption, came to be known as the Papanasham Beach
( Papanasham means redemption from sins). The 2000 year old
Sree Janardhana Swamy Temple and the Nature Care Centre
are the two main attractions here.

Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary

This sanctuary spread over 53 sq. km on the Western Ghats, is


accessible from Vithurai, which is on the way to Ponmudi. With
its rich flora and fauna, Peppara, dotted with hillocks, forests
and eucalyptus plantations, is emerging as a great attraction
for wildlife enthusiasts.

Ponmudi

An idyllic hill resort with narrow, winding pathways and cool,


green, wooded environs, Ponmudi is located 915 meters above
sea level. Along with a variety of beautiful mountain flowers,
exotic butterflies, small rivulets, springs and the deer park
nearby, this hill station also has excellent trekking trails.

Padmanabhapuram Palace

The seat of the erstwhile rulers of Travancore, this splendid


palace is situated at Thuckalai, on the way to Kanyakumari.
This is a well preserved wooden palace, a glorious testimony to
the traditional Kerala School of architecture. The extraordinary
murals, exquisite floral carvings and the black glossy granite
floor have withstood the test of time.

The temple is located inside the East Fort. Dedicated to Lord
Vishnu, the temple is a blend of the Kerala and Dravidian styles
of architecture. It is known for its mural paintings and stone
carvings. One among the 108 sacred Vishnu temples in India,
the presiding deity in here is Lord Vishnu reclining on Anantha
the Serpent.

Kuthiramalika (Puthenmalika) Palace Museum

The palace was built by Maharaja Swathi Thirunal Balarama


Varma - the King of Travancore, who was a great poet,
musician, social reformer and statesman. This rare specimen of
workmanship in the traditional Travancore style of architecture
also has exquisite wood carvings. The palace museum displays
paintings and various priceless collections of the royal family
and is located near the Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple.

Agasthyakoodam

Part of the Sahyadri range of mountains, Agasthyakoodam is


the second highest peak in Kerala, at a height of 1890 meters
above sea level. Teeming with wildlife, the forests of
Agasthyakoodam abound in rare medicinal herbs and plants
and brilliantly hued orchids. A bird watcher's paradise, this
legendary mountain is accessible by foot from Kotoor, near
Neyyar Dam, as also from Bonacaud. The season from
December to April is advocated for trekking, for which a forest
pass has to be obtained from the Wildlife Warden, Forest
Department, PTP Nagar, Thiruvananthapuram.

Kumarakom

There are many wonderful things you can do at Kumarakom. Wake up early in the
morning for the grandest show on earth. The sunrise. In the mornings, the lake is

Kettuvallams : Kettuvallams are huge, tapering barges which were traditionally


used to cargo rice and other goods across Kerala. It has a portion covered with
bamboo and coir are woven together with coir ropes and coated with a black resin
made from boiled cashew kernels.
Modern-day Kettuvallams called houseboats, carry
finished bedrooms, modern toilets, cozy living rooms, a
kitchen and even a balcony where tourists can laze on
cushions. Sections of the carved roof of wood and
plaited palms open out to provide shade and allow an
uninterrupted view. Most of the boats are poled by
local oarsmen. Some are powered by engines. Gliding
on serene backwaters, visitors can witness an un-spoilt
Kerala.
