Lack of Values Nowadays

By Silvia Chiommino

How many times have you heard about women or child abuse? How many
times have you heard about disrespect for 3rd age people? How many times have
you heard about cases of corruption, bullying, violence, trickery, vandalism, etc?

Too many times, isn’t it? That’s because every day we hear about these
cases, almost every day some talk about how the society is self-destructing because
the anti-values have invaded it. “Our mission and core values drive our culture and
are the foundation of our practice” Chris Hanslik.

According to the Oxford Dictionary, they are “principles or standards of

behavior; one's judgment of what is important in life”. On the other hand, the
Business Dictionary defines them as “Important and lasting beliefs or ideals shared
by the members of a culture about what is good or bad and desirable or
undesirable”. Values motivate our behavior, they have major influence on a person's
behavior and attitude and serve as broad guidelines in all situations.
Society is dynamic and subject to constant changing from simple traditional societies
to complex modern societies, and this change leds to new perspectives and
conceptions good or bad, because nowadays anti-values are more common than
values and this is really worrying because...
Moral values play an important role since they allow you to have an overall
feeling of peace and joy. They can give meaning and purpose to life. When you live
your life according to moral values you can also form positive bonds with other
people. These attributes also reduce your stress levels, which at the same time
propitiate a peaceful and harmonic environment.
Nowadays values are missing since we are in a society unappreciative of
morality and ethics. Moral values such as: Honor, Honesty, Dignity, Integrity, Mutual
Respect, had disappeared in our current society, because of a constant wave of
moral decadence, caused mainly by: materialism, gives place to anti-values since
money has become much more important than integrity and honesty, for example,
and technology, promotes them, as we can see for example in some video-games.
How can one develop and maintain self-awareness and self-consciousness?
Through education, because as Nelson Mandela said “education is the most
powerful weapon that you can use to change the world”. In this sense, we need "a
balanced education that moulds the human character and imparts moral values
giving place to a fair, just and productive life for everyone in a given society,
because...

“You can change the world by changing the man”.
