Professional Dispositions Statement

I believe that different instructional strategies must be used in the classroom to reach all

students as they all have the ability to learn and yet learn in different ways. How students learn

is impacted by the expectations and classroom environment that I will establish. I must create a

classroom environment that meets student’s personal and academic needs, respects their

differences, embraces their cultural backgrounds, and builds relationships. The expectations I set

must be high yet achievable for all students and individualized for them. As an educator I must

maintain professionalism through my dress, mannerisms, and interactions with staff and students.

I must demonstrate patience, compassion, and warmth for whom I work with and my students,

effective communication skills, and honor all commitments. Teaching is not an individual effort

and all teachers must work together to provide a quality education for all students.

The self-assessment helped form my dispositions statement by providing a thorough look

at what I deem important as an educator and organizing my statement. It also helped me realize

the dispositions that I have improved upon since I began the education program almost two years

ago. My professional dispositions statement will continue to evolve as I gain experience in

education and this self-assessment will guide me in crafting a new statement that accurately

reflects my growth as an educator.

The Model Code of Ethics and professional dispositions both address the qualities an

effective educator should have. Both the Model Code and dispositions stress the importance of

behaving in a professional manner with staff, students and their families, and using data to

inform instruction (National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and

Certification, 2015). They also address treating students, staff, and the community with respect,

compassion, and sensitivity (National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and

Certification, 2015). The Model Code of Ethics and professional dispositions should be kept on

hand for all teachers to use a reference in maintaining professional behavior.

Two dispositions I have grown in are understanding the importance of differentiation and

understanding the impact a student’s culture has on their learning. I have gained a much better

understanding of how students truly learn in different ways and that I must create lessons that

will meet their needs and show what they are capable of learning. I have become more attuned to

the fact that a student’s culture and background greatly effects how they learn and that is

important that I respect their culture and actively include their families in their child’s education.

While I have grown in my dispositions that does not mean that I do not have room to

improve. I will attend workshops and conferences that will help me plan effective lessons, learn

new ways to differentiate, include different cultures in the classroom, and how to communicate

effectively. I will also work with administration to understand their expectations and work with

veteran teachers on how to handle situations and lesson planning. My goal as an educator will to

always be reflecting on my teaching to ensure that I am doing all that I can to help my students

learn.
