Question 1

A rotary counter current dryer is fed with ammonium nitrate containing 5% moisture at the rate of
10kg/s and discharges the nitrates with 0.2% moisture. The air enters at 132 Deg C and leaves at 82
Deg C. the humidity of the entering air is 0.007kg moisture/ kg air and the nitrate enters at 21 Deg C
and leaves at 66 Deg C. Neglecting radiation losses, calculate the mass flowrate of dry air passing
through the dryer and the humidity of the air leaving the dryer.

The specific heat capacities may be taken as

Dry ammonium nitrate 1.88 kJ/kg.K

Dry air 0.99kJ/kg.K

Water vapour 2.01 kJ/kg.K

Liquid water 4.187 kJ/kg.K

Latent heat of evaporation of water 𝜆0 = 2450 kJ/kg

Question 2

Air is heated by a steam coil from 30 Deg C dry bulb temperature and 80 % relative humidity to 50
Deg C dry bulb temperature. Determine

2.1 The relative humidity of the heated air

2.2 The wet bulb temperature of the heated air

2.3 The dew point temperature of the heated air

2.4 The humidity of the heated air

2.5 The quantity of heat added per kilogram dry air.
