Clipper Ships and River Boats/Steamboats (10 pts)

Clipper ships were used mainly for trade and carrying things. John
W. Griffiths created the clipper ship. The clipper ship helped our
country by carrying things quickly. The steamboat was created by
Robert Fulton for the purpose of carrying people around. It
helped improve our country because it allowed an easy way to
travel upriver.

Telegraph (5 pts.)
Telegraphs were used for sending and receiving messages over a
long distance. You used it by sending electrical signals in dots and
dashes, also called morse code. Morse code was named after a man
named Samuel Morse, who also happened to invent the telegraph
itself. The telegraph helped expand the country, because people
could move to a new location without fearing that their
communication with people would be slow. After a while, the
telegraph was eventually replaced by the telephone.

Pony Express (5 pts.)

The pony express was a way to deliver mail over a long distance,
using riders and horses. Riders would travel long distances, then
let another rider take over so the mail would travel quicker.
Alexander Majors helped create this. Buffalo Bill was one of many
riders who helped with the Pony Express. It eventually went
bankrupt and had to close down, but it still helped our country by
getting mail to people faster and more efficiently. The Pony
Express was replaced by the telegraph.
