‘But recently, scientists have learned that aging, cells bear only
part of the blame for this problem. Anew study shows that it might
be possible ta slow the decline of
younger ~ by focusing on the stuff that surrounds those cell,
an independent study atthe University of Michigan Medical
School, skin scientists have succeeded in making the skin cells of
senior citizens act like younger cells again simply by adcling mc
filler tothe fibreiled area around the cell.
This extracellular matrix, or ECM, acts like the scaffold that skin
cells roost in I's made of tiny fibrils of collagen, produced by the
cells (fibroblasts), Over time, as skin ages, the ECM becomes frag
‘mented, which causes cells to lose their connections to that scaffold
~ and the lack of support accelerates their decline further.
The same thing may happen in other types of tissue
Inthe new study, scientists from the U-M De-
partment of Dermatology injected the skin of 21
volunteers in their 80s with a filler often used

Stay pretty to keep your job ;
The market for plastic surgery has grown
‘substantially n Russia over the last
decade, Itis now around a 100 million:
dollar business. Even if large part of
this sector remains in the shadows,
with little regulation, the practices
tend to be well run with well-trained
surgeons, Itis more and more com~

ciety of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS)

RUNNING FOR

Endurance training may keep
telomeres from shortening — a
marker of cellular aging
Telomeres are the end caps of chromosomes,
protecting the DNA complexes from deteriora-
tion during cell division. Telomere shortening,
is considered a marker of cellular aging, and
prematurely shortened telomeres have been
linked to increased risk of cancers, heart dis-
case, dementia and death. Researchers from
the Norwegian University of Science and
Technology (Norway) report that endurance
training may protect against the effects of
aging in older individuals Javaid Nauman
and colleagues recruited 20 men, haf of whom
were ages 22 to 27 and the other half ages 66 to
77. neach age group, half ofthe participants
were endurance athletes who were taking part
ina cross-country ski race or track competi-
tions. The others were nonathletes who were
active, but who had never competed at higher
levels in any sports. All of the participants
‘were free from known cardiovascular disease,
‘obesity, and a history of current or past smok-
ing, None was taking regular medications, The
team observed that in the older age group, the
‘endurance athletes had significantly longer
telomeres. Further, in the overall cohort,
telomere length was positively associated with
VO2max, with the relationship strongest
among the endurance athletes. The study au
thors write that: “Our data suggest that
VO2max is positively associated with telomere
length, and we found that long-term en-
ddurance exercise training may provide a pro-
tective effect on muscle telomere length in
‘older people.”

Bleaching can be quite
more porous. It has been noted by many people, that if they
ive up bleaching for a period, their teeth will become much
aarker than they were before they started using these
whiteners
Even the American Dental Association states that bleach-
ing can be harmful forthe teeth, mainly because the whitening
products contain high levels of peroxide, Peroxide in turn con-

and proteins and can cause damage within cells.
Too much bleaching can easily lead to teeth which are not
