STATEMENT
INTRODUCTION
The novel I have studied is Captain Nobody by Dean Pitchford. The scene that
made me happy was when Newt’s elder brother, Chris, wakes up from the
coma he was in after almost a week.
Newt was also admitted into the hospital as he had suffered from
multiple fractures on the right ankle, two broken ribs and a mild concussion
when he rescued Reggie Ratner from the Appleton Water Tower. Newt was

being put in the same room as his brother, Chris, who was in coma after a
football game. His parents, doctors and many other people were worried that
Chris will never wake up from his coma. Newt decided to try what he did at
home to wake Chris up. He was only three feet away from Chris who had tube
connected to machines. Newt yelled, “Hit the showers!” and nurses came
running in. A pillow hit Newt’s head just as Chris used to throw them at home
when he was woken up. Chris groaned that he is up just as he did at home. He
had come out of his coma.
The hospital room became crowded with many doctors, nurses and
others. All were happy and excited as Chris was reacting normally and his vital
signs were excellent. Newt received a lot of attention too as he had not only
played an important part to make Chris conscious again but also because he
had saved many lives earlier as Captain Nobody. This scene also made me
happy as Newt who had not received much attention from his parent and the
public was receiving lots of attention now.

concussion. It must be so heart-breaking for him and his family dealing with
the situation. Thankfully, miracle did happen! I feel so delighted when Chris
finally woke up from his coma. Apart from that, all the characters involved in
the scene are portrayed as happy too. It is of this memorable scene that I feel
joyful reading this novel.

him/her. Support your answer with close reference to the text
INTRODUCTION
The novel I have studied is Captain Nobody by Dean Pitchford. The
character that I choose is Newton Newman and the event that changes Newt’s
AN EVENT
life is, when he created an original superhero costume using Chris’s old clothes
with the help of his best friends JJ and Cecil. This event is vital as it affected
Newt’s confidence which then changed his life and the people around him.
This significant event is the start of some fearless journey for Captain Nobody.
STATEMENT
First, after the costume was created, Newt became a different person
whenever he put on his superhero costume. When Newt wore his Captain
Nobody costume, he felt strong and confident. For instance, Newt was able to

climb a tall dumpster in order to retrieve a big bass drum for his friend Cecil
even though he was afraid of heights because he was wearing the costume
which gave him confidence and power. Cecil, who had always wanted to have
a drum was beyond happy to finally own one with the help of Captain Nobody.
In my opinion, it is proven that the event where he created his Captain Nobody

costume has led Newt, who at first a timid person, changing into a person who
can conquer his fears and fulfil his friend’s wish. This eventually affect the lives
of his friends as he become dependable. RELATE

Next, after he created the costume, he believed that the costume helped
him to become fearless and he was able to do remarkable things. Newt was
able to do an impressive act such as saving Ferocious the Ferret, his school’s

football team mascot. Once, he dashed onto the highway and screamed at the
vehicles to stop in order to save the ferret. No one was brave enough to save
Ferocious except for him. On top of that, by clearing the road, he had
unwittingly saved an aeroplane full of passengers that needed to do an
emergency landing. From my standpoint, this once again shows that by making
OPINION and then wearing the Captain Nobody costume, Newt transform into a brave
boy who then changed his life and the people around him. His transformation
saved hundreds of lives! RELATE

Lastly, the costume that he created had given Newt a little bit of
maturity which then made the selfless Newt climbed the Appleton water
tower in order to save Reggie Ratner and then responsibly told Reggie the
truth. After watching the news report about Reggie climbing to the roof of the
Appleton water tower, Newt immediately rushed there to tell him the truth

about the big tackle incident. Even though he could not stand heights
(acrophobia), he courageously climbed up the water tower to save Reggie.
Eventhough he had no obligation to explain to Reggie about the big tackle
incident, this young boy showed his maturity and empathy by telling Reggie
the truth. I personally think that after he became Captain Nobody, he became
OPINION more mature despite of his young age. Newt was able to put Reggie Ratner
first and he took the responsibility to explain the truth in order to save Reggie
who was stuck on the water tower. If he did not create the costume, I doubt
that Newt would do such remarkable deeds.
