from India, Africa, Europe, North and South Americas, northern Africa,
the Middle East. History ensures some distinct markers on land, in and on
the bodies of the people, in and around the created communities. A certain
geography of interconnection in archipelagoes ensures the repetition that
Antonio Benitez-Rojo identifies as well as the consistent politics of creoliza-
tion as articulated by scholars and writers such as Kamau Brathwaite and
Edouard Glissant. And the reach into continental locations such as Guyana,
Venezuela, Belize, and the United States ensures the set of spatial extensions
already identified. But following Alejo Carpentier, one can also think of a
Caribbean Mediterranean (83), in which the sea is basically enclosed by land
spaces that make up the Caribbean. Wilson Harris had also described a “pre-
Columbian bridge of myth that runs through the Americas and with which
Pym achieves uncanny, however unconscious, synchronicity in the womb of
cultural space” (24). The sense or desire, perhaps, of that mythic yet actual
sea bridge arching into the Caribbean and moving into the Americas is one,
in my view, still worth seeing or feeling.
Archipelagization provides one entry point, as it carries the marks of his-
tory but also the possibilities of consistent transformation, resistance, and
re-creation. And there are several archipelagoes in the Caribbean, each with
relational patterns of repetition and difference. The histories of these archi-
pelagoes are also as seasoning places for enslaved Africans, the launching
points of colonial conquest of the Americas and the creation of departments
of colonial powers overseas. A laboratory of sorts was developed by colo-
nial powers on islands used to create new plants and hybrid people. Thus, a
contemporary celebration of a “Spice Island,” with all its sensual evocations,
sits on top of a historical reality that the island was used to develop various

asserts.
Still, in the larger geographical context of the Americas, Wilson Harris, in
his introduction to The Womb of Space, had described a desired movement of
an “intuitive self . . . endlessly into flexible patterns, arcs or bridges of com-
munity” (xviii). Although he had limited his study to selected works, Harris
was actually reaching for a “cross-cultural exploration rarely undertaken by
readers or critics” (xix). His definition of a womb of space then is actually
a “womb of cultural space” (17), which still demands an ongoing mediation
between all structured systems. Wonderful phrases such as “ambiguities of
freedom,” “meaningful distortions,” an “asymmetry within the infinity and
genius of art” capture some of his intent (17). But he was also, it seems to
me, claiming “a womb of evolutionary space” and a variety of “concentric
horizons”(29) that have now become more visible.

Zora Neale Hurston’s desire to pursue similar horizons was further clari-
fied during a visit to the Cape Canaveral, Florida, launching point for NASA,
the National Aeronautics and Space Administration of the United States. I
noted a caption that in many ways summarized Hurston’s view of the world
and makes her, as she wanted, a bona fide “Welcome to Our State Florid-
ian”: “In our time we have learned that the human horizon is infinite.” And,
ironically, it was this search for the horizon where Zora began her quest and
where “Jump at the Sun” still resonates. Along the way, she saw and did beau-
tiful things, including travel throughout the United States, the Caribbean,
and Central America, and thus found a way to embrace Caribbean Spaces
in ways that are worth emulating. That she wrote Their Eyes Were Watching
God (1938) in Haiti is still worth underscoring.
An interesting other use of space conceptually is the notion of “problem-
spaces,” as advanced by David Scott (Conscripts of Modernity) to account for
discontinuous theoretical though temporal spaces, in which actual unfolding
conditions produce alternative meanings. Here we have a different under-
standing of space, but more as a theoretical conjuncture that moves beyond
flattened or perhaps unicentric historical meanings to offer new analyses,
in which anticipated outcomes give way to new formations. An overview of
a variety of approaches to Caribbean culture, using metaphors of space and
place, forests and floral metaphors at times, is provided by Marsha Pearce
on caribbeanculturalstudies.com. Here Pearce searches for meaning that
gets at the uniqueness of a Caribbean cultural studies model, citing Norman
Girvan’s insistence that the term Caribbean is also an imposition or ordering
on a diverse and complicated land- and seascape.

into discourses of space and place, particularly when race sometimes cre-
ates uneven geographies. What is often read as empty space hides a range of
yet to be discovered or understood realities. There is a wonderful essay by
Thomas F. Carter called “Absence Makes the State Grow Stronger” (2011),
in which he describes the use or avoidance of certain spaces assigned to
state power that, even when not populated, signify loudly or become, in his
words, “materially and spatially manifest.” He was describing the Plaza of
the Revolution in Cuba with the intent of looking at the use of public and
private spaces and further revolutionary space. His expressed desire was to
take the logic of “small space” and find ways to extend it beyond its mean-
ing, beyond its local understanding, to thereby examine other small spaces
that have that kind of global reach, but also to examine what he calls the
“body-space dialectic” (60). I was quite excited to see “Caribbean Spaces,

reasserting the relevance of space over the overarching temporal logic that
underlies the range of philosophical traditions, including Marxism. In each
case, space is not only location itself but how social, political, and cultural life
informs and reshapes geography. For Soja, even the various “posts” carry a
particular temporality that obscures the spatial. In “Toward a Spatialized On-
tology” (Postmodern Geographies 129–30), he outlines a series of arguments
for a spatiotemporal dialectic that leads him in the end to find other spaces.
This provides the discursive openings for thinking about Caribbean Space/s.
Cianci, Patey, and Sullam cite the notion of space as defined by Lefebvre as
produced by a range of social and cultural forces, the politics of space that also
accounts for processes of decolonization and globalization. Thus, we can read
space as politicized, gendered, racialized, and therefore also classed.
Because the Caribbean is clearly one of those geopolitical locations im-
pacted by these larger historical developments, reading Caribbean space in

scapes” is pursued in chapter 4, which also brings together Brazil and the
Caribbean in a more analytical essay based on fieldwork in Brazil. It is fol-
lowed by “Middle Passages: Movable Borders and Ocean-Air Space Mobility.”
Chapter 6, a research-based chapter on Caribbean domestic labor, provides
some concrete examples of women and Caribbean migration and has been
updated for inclusion here. “Connecting Stories: My Grandmother’s Violin” is
a reflective piece that touches on issues of sexuality in the Caribbean context
but also provides some extended family history. It is the counterpoint to the
experiential chapter 12, “My Father Died a Second Time.” Literary examples of
issues of migration are captured in chapter 8, “‘Changing Locations’: Literary
Pathways of Caribbean Migration.” The iconic meaning of Haiti in African
diaspora symbology runs up against the difficulties of contemporary Haiti in
chapter 9, “‘Haiti, I Can See Your Halo!’: Living on Fault Lines.” Chapter 10,
“Caribbean GPS: Compasses of Racialization,” and chapter 11, “Circulations:

of writers, perhaps the most well known being V. S. Naipaul, accounted for
Caribbean realities in wider geographic colonial spaces and contexts. In
the 1980s, another Martinican, scholar Edouard Glissant, wrote Le discours
antillais (1981), Caribbean Discourse (trans. 1989), which offered definitions
that contemporary students and scholars like. He was articulating a poetics
for the Caribbean, which he defined more extensively in his Poetics of Re-
lation (1997), moving from the specifics of the Francophone Caribbean to
arrive at general discussions of the entire Caribbean or what is Caribbean-
ness, in conversation with the architectural and cultural theory called post-
modernism. In a similar way, another writer, this time from Cuba, Antonio
Benitez-Rojo, wrote The Repeating Island: The Caribbean and the Postmodern
Perspective (trans. 1992), which conceptualized the Caribbean as a series of
repetitions with difference. But before them, the work of Kamau Brathwaite,

historian and poet from Barbados who had lived in London and worked in
Ghana and studied Caribbean creole cultures, developed much of the basis
for discussions of creole cultures and creolization. Brathwaite has developed
more recently a theory called “tidalectics,” which defines how we exist with
the rhythms of the ocean, and has contributed as well the idea that “unity is
submarine.”
The historical, political, and economic writings of Eric Williams and
C. L. R. James, both of Trinidad, in the Anglophone Caribbean, have already
set the context for understanding the Caribbean in relation to the develop-
ment of European capitalist enterprises. But before them, a variety of politi-
cal actors, such as Hubert Harrison from St. Croix and Marcus Garvey from
Jamaica, had made major contributions to Pan-Africanism that resonated
subsequently in the music of reggae through the legendary Bob Marley and
Peter Tosh in the 1960s and into the present. And the work in development
economics of Arthur Lewis, from St. Lucia, guaranteed him a place in his-
tory and a Nobel Prize.
A great deal of thinking has come through the creative. Derek Walcott,
also from St. Lucia and another Nobelist, continues to demonstrate that the
“sea is history,” moving himself, during a more mobile time in his life, in the
1950s, between St. Lucia and Trinidad, recognizing along the way the logic of
a vocal twilight. Perhaps Antiguan Jamaica Kincaid’s entire body of work can
be identified for its struggles with autobiography as with Caribbean identity,
or the reader may like Barbadian American Paule Marshall’s books or the
young adult–targeted work of Rosa Guy from Trinidad, or find Michelle Cliff
critical to definitions of space. More recently, Edwidge Danticat, as a Haitian
American writer, in almost all her work has accounted for the movement

between Haiti and North America, though The Farming of Bones (1999) is
situated in the difficult history between the Dominican Republic and Haiti
on the same island. A fascinating story titled “Ghosts” identifies the harsh
conditions of Bel Air in Haiti in which hardworking people are sometimes
caught in the machinations of crime as executed by gangsters she refers to
as “ghosts,” people who are no longer operating with expected norms of
humanity, As a result, North America becomes an urgent possibility, for, as
one brother says safely from Canada, “Home is not always a place you have
trouble leaving” (2).
From Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, a number of writers,
such as Mayra Santos-Febres and Angie Cruz, provide the expansion of our
understanding of the Spanish-speaking Caribbean on some of these ques-
tions. Santos-Febres’s Sirena Selena: Vestida de Pena (2009) also captures the

history in other areas, from Bob Marley to Marcus Garvey, in the Jamaican
scene. Capturing the erotic between women specifically in ways that evoke
the earlier biomythography of Audre Lorde, Zami: A New Spelling of My Name
(1982), Omise’eke Natasha Tinsley in Thiefing Sugar (2010) interrogates a range
of sexualities in the Caribbean often unaccounted for or existing just outside
the vision of most scholars, but clearly in evidence in the literature itself.
Historians and political scientists of the Caribbean have provided wonder-
ful background work on the Caribbean useful for any contextualizing of early
and current developments. From Eric Williams, as we have pointed out, we
have his magnum opus, Capitalism and Slavery, but also From Columbus to
Castro: The History of the Caribbean, 1492–1969 (1970/1989). Franklin Knight
in The Caribbean: The Genesis of a Fragmented Nationalism (2012) and the
earlier work edited with Colin Palmer, The Modern Caribbean (1989), con-
tinuously updates historical understandings of the Caribbean, as has Hil-
ary Beckles, who, with Verene Shepherd, has written Caribbean Freedom:
Economy and Society from Emancipation to the Present (1996) and Freedoms
Won: Caribbean Emancipations, Ethnicities, and Nationhood (2007).
An interesting sociohistorical approach is provided by Mimi Sheller’s Con-
suming the Caribbean: From Arawaks to Zombies (2003), which describes in
its introduction “the exclusion of the Caribbean from the imagined time-
space of Western modernity” in “popular culture and the media, but also
within academic discourse” (1). Yet this conceptual exclusion accompanies
a simultaneous consumption of the “natural environment, commodities,
human bodies, and cultures of the Caribbean” (3). Finding interesting par-
allels between the way the Caribbean is imagined in terms of island space is

reality to another, and the sometimes newly created emotional, physical, and
conceptual space that then becomes another identified location. Twilight
zones can therefore be scary spaces of loss but also of gain. One echo and
prior use of twilight is, of course, Derek Walcott’s “What the Twilight Says:
An Overture” (1971). In my rereading, his invocation of twilight had more
to do with the impending dusk and movements into sensual darkness. Ad-
ditionally, in this much younger Derek, all the complications of racial and
cultural hybridity that occupied him permeate this sense of twilight. A more
recent revision of his reading is his 1992 Nobel presentation, “The Antilles:
Fragments of Epic Memory.” Here, Walcott relocates his vision to Felicity, a
village in Trinidad on the edge of the Caroni plain. In this essay, he paints a
picture of the dramatization of Ramleela of the Hindu epic the Ramayana,
in a landscape on which was superimposed Indian festival culture. “Felicity,”
with all its resonances and with all its history in Anglo-Saxon coloniality, but
not without engagement with its African and Indian diaspora memory, ac-
tors, and mythologies, provides a landscape as peopled by a series of actors,
dramatizing a variety of fragments of various epics. But above all, it captures
the re-creation and joy in this process that mark the Caribbean.
Thus, for him, “visual surprise is natural in the Caribbean; it comes with
the landscape, and faced with its beauty, the sigh of History dissolves.” Like
Zora Neale Hurston, for whom Eatonville, Florida, was as much an escape as
was the Bahamas, he believes, “We make too much of that long groan which
underlines the past.” Thus, Felicity, a name that invokes happiness, becomes
his metaphor of a new Caribbean creation. For him, “It is such a love that
reassembles our African and Asiatic fragments. . . . This gathering of broken
pieces is the care and pain of the Antilles, and if the pieces are disparate,

ill-fitting, they contain more pain than their original sculpture, those icons
and sacred vessels taken for granted in their ancestral places. Antillean art
is this restoration of our shattered histories, our shards of vocabulary, our
archipelago becoming a synonym for pieces broken off from the original
continent.”
At home in the Caribbean as a young man, Derek Walcott was able to
navigate Trinidad with ease, as his own St. Lucia. Along the way, he was
able to capture that epic recognition of the “sea as history” in the meaning
of the Caribbean but also its ongoing new histories, as Wilson Harris would
also refer to “the womb of sea and space” (31) and Kamau Brathwaite to the
idea that “the unity is submarine.” Walcott offers a powerful line: “Carib-
bean genius is condemned to contradict itself,” which almost becomes a
self-description.
