1.4 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

A. Structural Performance: Provide precast stair treads capable of withstanding the effects of
gravity loads and the following loads and stresses within limits and under conditions
indicated:
1. Live Load: 100 lbs. (45.4 kg) per square foot.
2. Concentrated Load: _____ lbs (___ kg) applied to a 4 square inch (25.8 sq.cm.) area.
3. Maximum Deflection: L/240 or 1/4 inch (6mm), whichever is less.
4. Maximum Deflection: L/360 or 1/4 inch (6mm), whichever is less.

5. Seismic Performance: Provide metal stairs capable of withstanding the effects of
earthquake motions determined according to ASCE 7, "Minimum Design Loads for
Buildings and Other Structures": Section 9, "Earthquake Loads."

1.5 SUBMITTALS

A. Submit under provisions of Section 01 30 00 - Administrative Requirements.

B. Product Data: Manufacturer's data sheets on each product to be used, including:


1. Preparation instructions and recommendations.
2. Storage and handling requirements and recommendations.
3. Installation methods.

C. Shop Drawings: Submit plan, section, elevation and perspective drawings as necessary to
determine the required dimensions and placement location for each product specified as well
as clarify the manufacturer's recommended installation, joinery and termination techniques.

D. Selection Samples: For each finish product specified, two samples representing
manufacturer's full range of available colors and finishes.

E. Verification Samples: At the pre-construction meeting, provide two full size samples
representing each specified product, showing color, finish. Sample may be used within the
Work specified in this section, provided no damage has occurred to it prior to or during
installation.

F. Include structural analysis data signed and sealed by the qualified professional engineer
(P.E.) responsible for their preparation.

1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Manufacturer Qualifications: All primary products specified in this section will be supplied by
a single manufacturer with a minimum of ten (10) years experience.

B. Installer Qualifications: All products listed in this section are to be installed by a single
installer with a minimum of five (5) years demonstrated experience in installing products of
the same type and scope as specified.

C. Mock-Up: Provide a mock-up for evaluation of surface preparation techniques and


application workmanship.
1. Finish areas designated by Architect.
2. Do not proceed with remaining work until workmanship, color, and sheen are
approved by Architect.
3. Refinish mock-up area as required to produce acceptable work.

1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Transport, store and handle precast concrete stair treads in accordance with manufacturers
written instructions.

B. Store precast concrete stair treads on pallets clear of mud and water. Stack precast concrete
stair treads to allow air to circulate freely and keep treads dry.

C. Do not allow cast in anchor bolts to be damaged during handling or to rust during storage.

D. Transport and store stair treads so that edges and corners of treads are not damaged.

E. Store and dispose of hazardous materials, and materials contaminated by hazardous
materials, in accordance with requirements of local authorities having jurisdiction.

1.8 PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. Maintain environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and ventilation) within limits


recommended by manufacturer for optimum results. Do not install products under
environmental conditions outside manufacturer's absolute limits.

1.9 WARRANTY

A. At project closeout, provide to Owner or Owners Representative an executed copy of the


manufacturer's standard limited warranty against manufacturing defect, outlining its terms,
conditions, and exclusions from coverage.
1. Duration: One (1) year from date of substantial completion.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 MANUFACTURERS

B. Requests for substitutions will be considered in accordance with provisions of Section 01 60


00 - Product Requirements.

2.2 MATERIALS

A. Concrete: Comply with requirements in Division 3 Section "Cast-in-Place Concrete" for


normal-weight, ready-mixed concrete with a minimum 28-day compressive strength of 5000
psi (34.5 MPa) and a total air content of not less than 4 percent or more than 6 percent.
1. Flexural Strength: 2500 to 3000 psi (17.25 - 20.7 MPa) in accordance with ASTM C
293.
2. Water Absorption: 3 to 4 percent absorption in accordance with ASTM C 67.

B. Aggregate: Report sieve analysis in accordance with ASTM C 136.

C. Reinforcing Bars: #3 - 3/8 inch (10mm) deformed rebar meeting the requirements of ASTM A
615, Grade 40.

D. Provide manufacturer's standard epoxy coating on reinforcing bars.

E. Embedded Stair Tread Anchor Bolts: ASTM F 1554, Grade 36.


1. Provide hot-dip or mechanically deposited, zinc-coated anchor bolts with nuts for
attaching and securing stair treads to stair framing.
2. Stair tread manufacturer's standard "shoulder nut" anchor bolt design to resist
damage due to excessive torque stress on anchor bolt nut, or normal stair movement.

F. Water: Potable.

G. Tread Dimensions:
1. Tread Length: 36 inches (914mm).
2. Tread Profile/Edge: Lip Profile, 87 degree angle with a 3/8 inch (10mm) eased edge.
Leading face extends down 3 3/8 inches (86mm) from tread surface.

2.3 GALVANIZED STEEL FlNlSHES

A. Surface Preparation: Clean and prepare surfaces to be painted according to manufacturer's
written instructions for each particular substrate condition and as specified.

B. Factory Priming for Field-Painted Finish: Where field painting after installation is indicated,
apply the air-dried primer specified below immediately after cleaning and pre-treating.
1. Shop Primer: Zinc-dust, zinc-oxide primer complying with performance requirements
in FS TT-P-641, Type II.

2.4 PRECAST CONCRETE TREAD FlNlSHES

A. Surfacing: Light to medium broom finish with a 2 inch (51mm) edging.

B. Tool stair tread exposed edges to form a 3/8 inch (10mm) radius.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Examine substrates and conditions for compliance with requirements for, installation
tolerances and other conditions affecting performance of work.

B. If substrate preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify Architect of


unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding.

C. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

3.2 PREPARATION

A. Clean surfaces thoroughly prior to installation.

B. Prepare surfaces using the methods recommended by the manufacturer for achieving the
best result for the substrate under the project conditions.

3.3 INSTALLATION, GENERAL

A. Cutting, Fitting, and Installation: Perform cutting, drilling, and fitting required for installing
precast concrete stair treads. Set units accurately in location, alignment, and elevation,
measured from established lines and levels.

B. Fastening to Metal Stairs: Provide anchorage devices and embedded threaded fasteners as
indicated on approved submittals for securing precast concrete treads to metal stairs.

3.4 TOUCH-UP AND CLEANING

A. Touchup Painting: Immediately after erection, clean field welds, bolted connections, and
abraded areas of shop paint, and paint exposed areas with the same material as used for
shop painting to comply with SSPC-PA 1 for touching up shop-painted surfaces.
1. Apply by brush or spray to provide a minimum 2.0 mil (0.5mm) dry film thickness.

B. Touchup Painting: Cleaning and touchup painting of field welds, bolted connections, and
abraded areas of shop paint are specified in Section 09 91 00 - Painting.

3.5 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Appearance of Finished Work: Variations in appearance of abutting or adjacent pieces are


acceptable if they are within one-half of the range of approved Samples. Noticeable
variations in the same piece are not acceptable.

3.6 PROTECTION

A. Protect installed products until completion of project.

B. Protect finishes on exposed surfaces from damage during manufacture and installation.

C. Touch-up, repair or replace damaged products before Substantial Completion.
