Conceptual Questions, Chapter 10

Ans 1: No, It is not necessary for every oscillatory motion to be simple harmonic. For Example motion of tuning fork, swing are not SHM. For SHM the two
conditions must be satisfied.
Ans 2: A particle executing simple harmonic motion has maximum magnitude of velocity at mean position and minimum magnitude of velocity at extreme
position.
Ans 3: Yes, the restoring force in SHM becomes zero at the mean position. According to hook’s law F=-Kx at mean position ‘x’ is zero so Force also become
zero.
Ans 4: a) Effect on Time Period: if we shorten the string of a pendulum to half of its original length then its time period will decrease by a factor of 1/√2
b) Effect on Frequency: if we shorten the string of a pendulum to half of its original length then its frequency will increase by a factor √2.
Ans 5: Attach a small stone to the lower end of the wire so that it look like a pendulum, set it in to vibration. Now find the length by using the time period
formula. L=gt2/4π2
Ans 6: consider the swing as pendulum. As the person stands up instead of sitting, the length of pendulum decreases so the frequency of the oscillation
increases because it is inversely proportional to the square root of the length of pendulum.
Ans 7: the transverse waves move in forward direction while the tiny colored part of the string move up and down executing SHM
Ans 8: the speed of water waves is not the same in deep & shallow water therefore waves refract at the boundaries of shallow and deep water.
Ans 9: the amount of diffraction becomes more and more if the opening is made small i.e. making it comparable in size to the wave length of the wave.
