Model C Knock-Out Isolation Valve

APPLICATION
The Model C™ knock-out isolation valve is a single-acting inverted flapper valve designed to
protect the formation from well hydrostatic pressure and resulting fluid loss after screen liner
placement or gravel packing. The valve is run between the packer and screen and contains
a frangible flapper that is held in the open position by the washpipe during run-in, screen
placement and gravel packing. As the service tools and washpipe are pulled from the well,
the flapper swings to the closed position to isolate the formation. The washpipe should be
pulled slowly in one continuous motion until the end of the washpipe is well above the valve.
Any downward motion as the end of the washpipe is coming through the valve can damage
the flapper and its seat.

For well completion, the flapper can be left intact or can be broken to open the valve. The
optimum method to open the Model C knock-out isolation valve is to pressure up within
100 psi (6.9 bar) of the total differential pressure (hydrostatic plus applied minus formation
pressure) rating and jar down with a mechanical device (wireline sinker bar assembly,
production tube or coiled tubing) to break the flapper. The valve can also be opened hydraulically
by pressuring up above the valve in excess of its differential pressure rating. Alternatively, the
valve can be opened with mechanical action alone by jarring down or spudding with a wireline
sinker bar assembly, production tube or coiled tubing to break the flapper.
