He said that 15 based on his observation, marriages generally last between five and 10 years before breaking down. 4 Family lawyer Honey Tan similarly said women are now more aware of their rights, but pointed out that the law still discriminates against women as they generally end up with a lesser share, especially homemakers, when matrimonial 20 assets are divided during a civil divorce. Tan added that although the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976 takes into account the non-monetary contributions of women who quit their jobs to look after their children, their husband will always receive a greater share of matrimonial assets in a divorce. “The ability of men to ear income is still valued more than the ability of women 25, to look after the home and the family, especially the children,” said the lawyer. Preventing memory loss 1 No matter what your age, itis not too late to take steps to prevent memory loss. A good place to start is with the strategies for improving your memory. Research shows that the following strategies may help preserve your memory. 2 Exercise. Physical fitness and mental fitness go together. People who get regular vigorous exercise also tend to stay mentally sharp in their 70s and 80s, 5 There are several ways in which exercise might benefit your memory. First of all, it is good for the lungs, and people whose memories and mental acuity Femain strong in old age characteristically have good lung function. Second, exercise helps reduce the risk for diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and stroke ~ illnesses that can lead to memory loss, And finally, animal research 10 hhas shown that exercise increases the level of neurotrophins, substances that nourish brain cells and help protect them against damage from stroke and other injuries, 3 Keep learning. Experts think that advanced education may help keep memory strong by getting people into the habit of being mentally active. 15 Regardless of your level of education, you, too, can be an active, lifelong learner, Some people continue their education with adult education classes or advanced degrees even in late adulthood. But efforts do not have to be so ambitious to be beneficial. Reading regularly, keeping up with current affairs, leaning a new hobby, and playing challenging games all exercise your mind. 20 4 Don’t smoke, Studies show that smokers do not remember people's names and faces as well as non-smokers do. No one knows whether smoking directly impairs memory or is merely associated with memory loss because it causes illnesses such as stroke and hypertension that contribute to memory loss. Smoking can interfere with memory in other ways, too. For one thing, it 25 damages the lungs, and good lung function is one of the characteristics of people whose memories stay strong in old age. In addition, smoking constricts the blood vessels to the brain, depriving it of oxygen and possibly harming neurons. 5 Maintain a healthy diet. A healthful diet rich in fruits and vegetables as well as healthy fats from fish, nuts, and whole grains is vital in maintaining the 30 health not just of your body but for your brain as well. Avoid excess calories to maintain a normal weight; this lowers your risk for illnesses such as diabetes and hypertension, which can impair your memory. 6 Get a good night’s sleep. Sleep is essential for memory consolidation as well as overall health. Although people vary widely in their individual sleep 35 needs, research suggests that six to eight hours of sleep a night is ideal. Perhaps even more important than the amount of sleep is the quality of sleep. People \with breathing problems during sleep, such as obstructive sleep apnea, can sleep for 10 hours per night but never feel refteshed in the morning, (Adapted from hitp:/Avw zalth.harvard.edu, 2000-2014) MUET 2016 800/3/3 [Turn over *This question paper is CONFIDENTIAL until the testis over.
