Cross Classification ATAU CATEGORY ANALYSIS

THE CLASSICAL MODEL
• The method was known as category analysis in the UK (Wootton and Pick 1967) and
cross-classification in the USA
• The method is based on estimating the response (e.g. the number of trip productions
per household for a given purpose) as a function of household attributes
• Basic assumption is that trip generation rates are relatively stable over time for
certain household stratifications
• The standard method for computing these cell rates is to allocate households in the
calibration data to the individual cell groupings and total, cell by cell, the observed
trips TP (h) by purpose group. The rate tp (h) is then the total number of trips in cell
h, by purpose, divided by the number of households H(h)
