Answer all the following questions. Figures in the right-hand margin indicating full marks.
Show all your works to get full credit.

1. (a) Find the standard matrix for the linear operator 𝑇: 𝑹𝟑 → 𝑹𝟑 that first rotate a vector counterclockwise about the [5]
z-axis through an angle 𝜃 = 60°, then reflect the resulting vector about 𝑦𝑧 -plane, and then transform by the
formula 𝑇 𝑥! , 𝑥! , 𝑥! = (2𝑥! − 3𝑥! + 5𝑥! , −𝑥! + 2𝑥! + 𝑥! , 𝑥! + 2𝑥! + 𝑥! ). Hence compute 𝑇(1, −2,1).

(b) Determine which of the following are true or false: [5]

(i) If the coefficient matrix A of the system 𝐴𝑥 = 𝑏 is invertible, then the system has no solution.
(ii) 1, −2,3 , 2,2, −5 , 0,0,0 , and (−2,0,4) are linearly independent.
(iii) Let 𝑊 be the subset of 𝑹𝟑 and defined by 𝑊 = 𝒙 = 𝑥! , 𝑥! , 𝑥! : 𝑥! + 2𝑥! + 2𝑥! − 2 = 0 . Then
𝑊 is not a subspace of 𝑹𝟑 .
(iv) The sum of the dimension of the column space and null space are equal to the number of the
column of the matrix.
(v) If the rank of coefficient matrix and augmented matrix are different then the system is consistent.

2. (a) Let 𝑉 be the vector space of all real 3×3 matrices. Consider the subset [5]
𝑊 = {𝐴 ∈ 𝑉: 𝐴 is an orthogonal matirx}
Prove or disprove that 𝑊 is a subspace of 𝑉. [Hint: A is an orthogonal matrix if 𝐴! 𝐴 = 𝐼]

(b) Determine whether or not the following vectors 𝑢1 = (2,4,8), 𝑢2 = (−1, 1, −1), and 𝑢3 = (3,2,8) [5]
span 𝑹𝟑 . If not find the space spanned by these vectors.

3. (a) Let 𝑉 be the vector space of functions from 𝑹 into 𝑹. Let 𝑓, 𝑔, ℎ ∈ 𝑉. Determine whether the following set of [5]
functions are linearly independent or dependent. Where:
𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑒 !! , 𝑔 𝑥 = 𝑥 ! 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ℎ 𝑥 = sin 𝑥.
If dependent write one of the function as a linear combination of other functions.

(b) Let 𝑃! denote the set of polynomials of degree 3 or less with real coefficients. Consider the ordered basis [5]
𝐵 = 1 + 𝑥, 1 + 𝑥 ! , 𝑥 − 𝑥 ! + 2𝑥 ! , 1 − 𝑥 − 𝑥 !
Write the coordinate vector of the polynomial 𝑓 𝑥 = −3 + 𝑥 − 2𝑥 ! in terms of the basis 𝐵

4. (a) Let 𝑆 = 𝒗! , 𝒗! , 𝒗! , 𝒗! , 𝒗! where [5]

1 1 0 1 2
𝒗! = 2 , 𝒗! = 0 , 𝒗! = 0 , 𝒗! = 1 , and 𝒗! = −2
3 −1 1 1 3
1 2 7 1 1
Find the basis for the space span(S) which is a subset of S.

(b) Solve the following system of linear equations by transforming its augmented matrix to reduced row echelon [5]
form (Gauss Jordan elimination)
𝑥! − 𝑥! − 2𝑥! = 1
𝑥! + 3𝑥! − 𝑥! = 2
2𝑥! − 2𝑥! + 𝑥! − 3𝑥! = 0

Find the vector form for the general solution. Hence find the following
(i) Basis and dimension for the Null space of the coefficient matrix
(ii) Basis and dimension for the Row space of the coefficient matrix
(iii) Rank of the coefficient matrix.

5. (a) 𝑎 −2 1 [2]
Let A be a matrix given by 𝐴 = 1 3 1 for some variable "𝑎". Find all values of “a” which will
−1 2 −1
guarantee that 𝐴 has eigenvalues 0,1, and 3.

(b) Using the values of "𝑎" found in 5(a), find the corresponding basis for the eigenspaces of A. [5]

(c) Find the matrix 𝑃 that diagonalizes 𝐴 (if possible) and hence compute 𝐴!" . [3]

6. (a) Consider the planning and scheduling problem facing a manufacturer of microwave ovens with two models in [5]
its line- the standard and the deluxe. Each oven is assembled from component parts and subassemblies that are
produced in the mechanical and electronics departments. The following table shows the number of production
hours per oven in each department and the capacities of the three production departments, in monthly hours.

Standard (h/oven) Deluxe (h/oven) Capacity (h/month)

Assembly Department 4 4 560
Mechanical Department 3 2 400
Electronics Department 2 4 400

The sales department believes that there will be demand for as many ovens as the company can produce. The
accounting department has determined that the profit contribution are $50 for each standard and $40 for each
deluxe. Mathematically formulate the problem as a linear programming problem.

(b) Solve the linear programming problem geometrically and determine a production plan to maximize monthly [5]
profit contribution.
