Exercice 1:
A feed of 13500 kg/h consists of 8 wt% acetic acid in water. Acetic acidwill be removed from the
solution by extraction with pure methyl isobutylketone at 298 K. If the raffinate is to contain only
1wt% of acetic acid.
1- Determine the number of ideal stages requiredif the extraction is done in a countercurrentcascade
and the solvent rate used is twice the minimum.Assume that water and methyl isobutyl ketone are
insoluble. For this system, KD = 1.273 kg water/kg methyl isobutyl ketone.

Exercice 2:
A pyridine-water solution, 50 wt% pyridine, is to be continuously and counter currently extracted at
the rate of 2.25 kg/s with pure chlorobenzene toreduce the pyridine concentration to 2 wt%.
(a) Determine the minimum solvent rate required.
(b) If 2.3 kg/s of solvent is used, calculate the number of theoretical stagesrequired, and the flow
rates of final extract and raffinate.
