The purpose ofthe program was to determine ifthe proposed CB mixes will meet the project requirements for strength and permeability. One portion of the testing program included adding sand and water to two CB mixes to simulate actual field conditions encountered during the Installation of the test section installed in 2009. Another portion of the testing program evaluated two CB mixes ‘without the addition of sand to either mixture. 1.1 ORJRCTIVE The objective of this testing program was to develop a site-specific, CB backfill material for the seepage barrier along the L31N canal, adjacent to Everglades [National Park. The testing program was performed which included the following: Properties ofthe CB slurry to permit efficient pumping ofthe slurry; Proportioning of differing ratios of cement and bentonite; Permeability testing with a target value ofless than 9x 10 cm/sec at 28 days; Compressive strength testing with a target value of greater than 10 psi @ 28 days. 5. Investigate the impact of CB slurry with large amounts of saturated sand added. 1.2. TECHNICAL APPROACH For this testing program, the primary focus was to develop a CB slurry mix that ‘would have adequate fluidity, sample strength and permeability. The CB slurry was also tested for the ability to suspend saturated sand/gravels. Initially, two CB mixes were formulated for a lab study using sand addition. The frst mix (Mix #:) was similar to the mix used in the original test section (B/W=.054, C/W=.17). A second CB mix (Mix #2) added approximately 30% more cement and bentonite tc the original mix (B/Ws.07, C/W=22) in an attempt to overcome the additional water potentially introduced from the entrainment of saturated sand, Saturated sand was added to each of these mixes ata ratio of one part sand to two parts CB slurry, by volume, The samples were cured and taken to an offsite lab for UcS at 7 and 28 days, and permeability testing at 28 days. A second setof CB slurry mixes were formulated using differing bentonite additions, while holding the cement addition constant at 2296. These mixes were chosen based ‘on the results of the lab study with the addition of saturated sand, One mix (Mix #3) used a bentonite content of 5.4% and the other mix (Mix #4) used a bentonite content of 7%. Mix #4 was a duplicate of the mix #2 slur-y used in sand lab study. Both of these samples were cured and taken to an offsite lab for UCS at 7, 14 and 28 days, and permeability testing at 14 and 28 days. Pinhole dispersion testing was also performed at 7 days on each of the samples to determine the erodibility ofeach of the CB mixes. 1.2 LABORATORY TESTING ‘The lab study and the CB slurry mixing were performed by Geo-Solutions Inc. in New Kensington, Pennsylvania. The UCS testing, permeability testing and the pinhole dipersion testing were performed by Geotechnics of East Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The primary emphasis ofthe lab study focused on the following tests and or material properties: ‘+ Fluid properties as measured by Marsh Funnel and mud balance (API 138). + Hydraulic conductivity as measured by triaxial permeameters + Strength as measured by UCS tests 2.0 MATERIALS ‘The materials used for the testing program were follows: 24 MIXWATER ‘The mixing water used for the laboratory study was Pittsburgh tap water. Bentonite slurry mixes were made using the Pittsburgh tap water, The Pittsburgh tay water ‘was previously tested and the properties are listed below: TargetValue Pgh Tap Water. pH 7s 75 TDs <1500 mg/L 2 Hardness $250 mg/L 131 ‘The test results of the tap water can be used as a background comparison to the canal water, should the bentonite slurry properties in the lab differ from those encountered inthe field using similar proportions. 22 RENTONITE ‘A sample of premium grade, 90 bbl yield, powdered bentonite was obtained from ‘Wyo-Ben Inc. (Hydrogel). The bentonite used for the previous test section was also.a 2 30 90 bbl yield bentonite, obtained from Federal Industrial Products (Fed Jel 90). The 90 EbI yield refers to the minimum amount of barrels (42 US gallons) of 15 centipoise (viscosity measurement equal to ~40 second slurry as measured through Marsh Funnel) slurry that can be created with one ton of bentonite, A 90 bbl yield bentonite is the standard material used for a majority of the slurry wall construction and grouting work performed in the United States, This bentonite complies with American Petroleum Institute 13A requirements 2.8 CEMENT ‘The cement used for the laboratory design mix was a standard Portland Type I /l powdered cement. For this project, Cemex will supply the cement. 24 SAND ‘The sand used for the lab testing program was medium-coarse sand purchased at a local supply store. ‘MIX SAND USED IN LAB STUDY SAMPLE PREPARATION 3a BENT ‘The initial bentonite slurry mixtures were made using the Pittsburgh tap water and Hydrogel 90 bentonite. The bentonite slurry used for the selected mixtures was at a B/W ratio of 054 for mix #1 and Mix #3, and.07 for mix #2 and mix #4 The initial bentonite slurry mixtures were prepared using a high-speed mixer uetil the a bentonite and water were fully mixed, The mixtures were allowed to sit for a ‘minimum of one hour to allow for partis! hydration, similar to what is expected in the field. The bentonite slurry was then mixed again using the high speed mixer before the properties were tested and recorded. These tests included the Marsh Funnel viscosity and density MEASURING VISCOSITY AND DENSITY ‘The results ofthe bentonite slurry tests are as follows: Mitt BAW Ratio ‘Marsh Funnel Viscosity Density. 1 5.4% 43sec 645 pet 2 70% 57 sec 655 pet a 5.4% 42sec 64.5 pet 4 7.0% 5Assee 65.0 pef 3.2 CEMENT-BENTONITE SLURRY MIXING ‘The hydrated bentonite slurry was then used to make the CB slurry mixes. Cement ‘was added and mixed with the high speed mixer until the mix was homogeneous. Mix #1 was the same mix (B/W=.054, C/W=.17) that was used in the original test section installed in 2009. Mix #2 (B/W=07, C/W=.22) was formulated to reflect a 30% increase in the material quantities, which is expected to overcome the addition of water from the saturated conditions known to be present. Mix #3 (B/We.054, (C/W=.22) was formulated to compare the results to mix #1 using additional cement. Mix #4 (B/W=,07, C/W=22) was used to duplicate mix #2, with focus on the actual CB slurry properties without the addition of saturated sand, Each sample was tested for Marsh Funnel viscosity and density. ‘The results ofthe CB slurry tests are as follows: Mixt = B/WRatio C/WRatio Marsh Funnel Viscosity 1 2 3 4 a3 [As part ofthe lab study, sand was introduced into CB slurry for mixes #1 and #2 in 4an effort to simulate what was encountered during the initial test trench. The sand ‘was a medium coarse sand that was oven dried, prior to the start of the lab study, to ‘remove the moisture content. Approximately 10 cm of dry sand was added to a 5- gallon bucket. This represented approximately 1/3 of the volume of the bucket. Water was added to the sand until the sand became completely saturated, In each sample, 1.9 liters of water was used to saturate the sand before the fresh CB slurry was added. In both samples of this portion of the study, this equates to adding MIXING AND TESTING CB SLURRY 5.4% 17% 7.0% 22% 5.4% 22% 7.0% 22% ‘SAND ADDITION LAR STUDY 75sec 176 sec 58sec 203 sec approximately 17% more water to the CB slurry mixes. The resulting samples represented approximately 2 parts CB slurry and 1 part saturated sand by volume. The sand and CB slurry were mixed together using the high speed mixer until the sand and water appeared to be ‘thoroughly mixed into the CB slurry. Each sample was tested for Marsh Funnel viscosity and density. The results of the CB/sand tests are as follows: Mix wsand —BAWRatio G/W Ratio Marsh Funnel Viscosity Density 1 5.4% 17% 44sec B84.0peF 2 7.0% 22% 125 see 920pef ‘Samples of the final CB/sand mixtures were taken and placed into Z-inch x 4-Inch ‘molds for laboratory testing for strength and permeability. The mixtures were allowed to sit fora minimum of one hour to determine ifthe sand would settle out of the CB slurry mixes. At that point, additional samples were made in tke plastic cylinder molds. One set was taken from the top of the buckets and another set was taken ‘rom the bottom of the buckets. These samples will be tested for strength at 7 and 28 days. (CB/SAND SAMPLES Clear tubes were also placed into the buckets to allow for visual observation of the cured samples. These tubes were removed from the buckets after 4 days of curing, OBSERVATION TUBES ‘There were no obvious differences in the amount of sand that either mix suspended when looking through the tubing. The tubes were cut in half to make another visual observation of the hardened CB/sand mixtures. It was difficult to determine if one ‘sample suspended more sand than the other. The bottom 10 cm and the top 10 em of the tube samples were washed through a #40 sieve to determine if one mix suspended more sand than the other by weight. The results were as follows: Mix Sand Retained on #40 Sieve vwsand — B/WRatio C/W Ratio Top1cm Bottom 10cm 1 5.4% 17% 208 288 2 709% 22% 28 298, ‘TUBE SAMPLES 40 RESULTS ‘The properties ofthe slurry mixes, along with the cured CB sample results are presented in the following discussion, 44 SLURRY TESTING ‘As expected, the properties ofthe bentonite slurry, comprised of Hydrogel and tap ‘water, were typical. The viscosity and density Increased as the amount of bentonite increased. When cement was add to each sample, the viscosity and density also Increased accordingly. The workability of Mix #2 and #4 was atthe upper end of the viscosity that can be pumped over a long distance. When the saturated sand was Introduced into the CB slurry, the viscosity of both samples was reduced, due to the addition of water, and the unit weight of both samples was increased, due to the addition of sand. 4:2 CURED CH SAMPLES ‘Lab Study with Sand Ater one day of curing, the bucket samples used in the sand lab study portion of the test program were examined fer the amount of "bleed" on each sample, Mix #1, which contained the lesser amount of bentonite and cement, showed approximately 1 om of bleed, which is approximately 3.5% by volume. Mix #2 which contained '30% more bentonite and cement had no observable bleed after one day. The molded samples were also examined forbleed and similar observations were made, bas CURED MIX #1 CORED Mix #2 The cured samples in the tubes showed that either mix could suspend sand when properly mixed. No notable settlement was observed in either sample, Mix Desion Mix #3 and mix #4 were also observed for any visual bleed after one day of curing, and no observable bleed was recorded, Both of these samples appeared to cure as expected for CB slurry, with minimal shrinkage. 4.3 COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH TESTING/PERMEABILITY TESTING ‘The molded samples were capped and cured. A minimum of six samples were made for each mix. For mix #1 and #2, the CB samples before the addition of sand were tested at 7 days for UCS and at 28 days for permeability. The other samples, after the addition of sand, were made from the top and bottom of the bucket after a minimum of one hour of curing time to ailow the sand to potentially settle. These samples were tested for UCS at 7 days and 28 days. For mix #3 and #4, each CB mix was tested at 7, 14 and 28 days for UCS, and at 14 and 28 days for permeability. The results ofthe laboratory testing are as follows; 9 Ucs (psi) Permeability (cm/sec) pw __ cw __7day 14 28d: wai 23 m 0054 a7 403 37x10" Top 2a 6.82 Bottom Bas 994 ry 007 = 0.22 et Rar 10% Top ao7 17.48 Bottom 1.00 29.18 #8 ose 022 5.09 88.7 29x20 4.510 wa 0070022 aor ts8 1594 12x30 77x10 44 PINHOLE DISPERSION TESTING Per the project specifications, a Standard Pinhole Dispersion Test was performed for cach of the CB samples at 7 days. The pinhole test was performed on the samples from mix #1 and #2 that had sand added to the CB slurry. The testing for mix 43 and #4 were on pure CB slurry. The results ofthis laboratory testing showed no change 1m sample shape, and erodibility was not an issue in any ofthe samples. 5.0 CONCLUSION/RECOMMENDATIONS Based on the results ofthis program, a CB slurry mix with increased bentonite and cement will result in improved physical parameters for the completed wall. All of the samples with 22% C/W met the specified strength of 10 psi at 28 days. The sample with 17% C/W did rot meet this requirement. It should also be noted that the strength of the samples with sand (#1 and #2) increased with depth. ‘The CB slurry mixes with 7% B/W content met the requirements for permeability helng in the 10 m/sec range, while the samples with 5.4% B/W content did not. The results also indicate that permeability will decrease slighty as the samples cure. While the small scale tests with the addition of saturated sand did not show a significant éifference in sand-suspending properties of the two CB slurries, it is certainly presumable that the thicker slurry should perform better in this regard. We were able to establish that either mix would work if the sand is completely mixed with the CB slurry. The samples mixed without the addition of sand performed as expected. As Indicated with the lab data, ‘more bentonite added to the CB slurry will provide better permeability results, and more cement will provide higher strengths, It is our intention to begin the barrier wall installation in the field with the thicker slurry (mix #2 and mix #4) and adjust, as appropriate, to achieve the project objectives. a UNCONFINED COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH ‘echnics ASTM 02168067 AASITO T2605 osc Peak nd On (SOP 3) _ lent GEO-SOLUTIONS Boring No. saz Client Reference P4147 KROME AVE opin ct) Projet No. 2011-88001 ‘Sample No. LabiD 2011-880.01-03, Visual Descrigion: "GRAY CEMENT BENTONITE TRITIAL SAMPLE DNENSTONS WATER CONTENT AFTER TEST Length tem 3401 2007| [Tare No. 594 Length 20m) 3.338, 2021] wa Tare + WS.foms) 140.13, Leng 30m) 3.304 2.025] lw Tare+Dsioms) 197.92 lava tenatnen: 3.377 3.228] |. of Teretams) 80.80 Lx Moisture 87.34 UNIT WEIGHT lw.
