WHAT IS AN ABS7
Ordin ary brakes wo rk to slow or stop a vehicl e
by ut ilizing two types of resista nce . The se are
the resistance between the brake pad s and d iscs
(o r brake shoes and drums) and t he resis tance
between t he ti res and t he road surface. Braking
can be co ntro lled in a stable manne r if t he

the brake syst em and the res istance between

3. O PERATION

System operation is explain ed be low using a fron t wheel as an example.

DURING NORM AL BRAKING lABS NOT ACTIVATED)

The ABS is not activated duri ng no rmal braking When the b rake peda l is rel eased. the brake
and the A BS's ECU does not send electric ity to fl uid ret urn s f rom th e wheel cylinder to t he brak e
t he so lenoid coil. Th eref o re. t he t hree-position mas t er cyl in der th ro ug h port "C " to port " A " and
valve is pu shed down by a return spring and th e No.3 chec k valve in the three-position so lenoi d

CHECK ACTUATOR OPERATION NOISE
(a) St art th e eng ine and drive at a spee d over 6 km /h
(4 mph).
(b) Check whethe r actuato r ope rat ion noise is heard.
NOTE: The A BS ECU ca rries out an initial check o nce each
time the engine is started and t he initial speed exceeds 6
kmlh (4 mph). It also checks fu nctions of the th ree-
position so lenoid and pump moto r i n the actuator.
How ever, if the brake peda l is depressed, t he initial check
is not carried out, but is started after the pedal has been
released.

PRECAUTION

While the sensor check fu nct ion is being checked. the ADS
will not work and the brake system will act as an ordinary
brake system .

SPEED SENSOR CHECK FUNCTION


1. INSPECT BATTERY VOLTAGE
Check t hat the batte ry vo ltage is about 12 V.

2. CHECK WARNING LIGHT


(a) T urn t he ig nition switch on .

3. FUNCTIONS

Component Function
• Ju dges driving cond itions based on sig nals from fro nt and rear speed sensors
and on throttle positi on sig nals f rom Eng ine & ECT ECU, and sends control
sig nals t o sub-throttle actuator and TRC brake actuator accord ingly. At the
A SS & TRC ECU same time, it sends signals to Engi ne & ECT ECU t o inform it of TRC
operat ion.
• If TRC syste m m alf unction s, it turns on TRC in dicato r lig ht to alert driver.
• When set in di ag nostic mo de, it displays each ma lfunction by a code number.
Fro nt and rear speed Detect w heel speeds and send whee l speed sig nals to ABS & TRC ECU.
