MEHMAS AT THE DOUBLE keenly in 2021.
Take Mehmas out of the equation and 24 winners is a decent
first tally. That was the number of winners notched by
Whitsbury Manor Stud's Adaay (Ire) in 2020 from his 64 runners.
He is missing a stakes winners but has been represented by
three black-type performers and two useful dual winners, Shark
Two One (GB) and Twaasol (GB), both rated in the mid-90s.
With Mehmas and Adaay the leaders in Ireland and Britain,
respectively, the emerging young sire in France was Haras de
Colleville's Goken (Fr), who was another stallion to make his
mark almost as soon as racing resumed in France, and the day
after his stud-mate Galiway (Fr) had supplied the first juvenile
winner of the season in the high-class Sealiway (Fr). What will
certainly have pleased his breeder and Colleville's owner Guy
Pariente is that Goken is a son of the stallion who made the
Normandy stud's name, Kendargent (Fr). Furthermore, his 15
winners, including the Group 3 winners Livachope (Fr) and Go
Mehmas (Ire) | Tally-Ho Stud

It is, frankly, a staggering tally, with 101 of his 121 named
first-crop foals having set foot on a racecourse in 2020.
Moreover, there was strength in depth. Mehmas's 12 black-type
performers include four stakes winners in Europe, led by
Supremacy (Ire), winner of the G1 Middle Park S. and
G2 Richmond S. and Minzaal (Ire), winner of the Gimcrack S and
third behind the former in the Middle Park. He also finished the
year with a flourish as the sire of a fifth stakes winner,
Quattroelle (Ire), in the Blue Norther S. at Santa Anita.
Having passed this first stage with flying colours, the challenge
now is for Mehmas to sustain this dominance. He covered 177
mares in 2018, and unsurprisingly the results of those matings
were popular at the most recent round of yearling sales. The
true test of any stallion is what happens when his runners turn
three and beyond. We've seen plenty burn brightly in their
debut season with runners only to fizzle out, but nonetheless Goken (Fr) | Haras de Colleville

The Darley duo of Territories (Ire) and Belardo (Ire) feature in
fourth and fifth in the European table, with the former hailing
from the family of Shamardal and Belardo, by Lope De Vega
(Ire), being one of Shamardal's grandsons. The 19 winners and
seven black-type horses for Territories represent a decent start
and they included the Group
3 winner Rougir (Fr), who
was also third in the G1 Prix
Marcel Boussac. Belardo is
certainly worth noting and
following closely in the
season to come. From his
51 runners, he has
13 winners, four of which
were stakes winners, with
Isabella Giles (Ire) landing
both the G2 Rockfel S. and
G3 Prestige S. and Lullaby
Moon (GB) winning the
G3 Prix Miesque and listed
Two-Year-Old Trophy among
their four wins apiece.
Coolmore's Pride Of Dubai Territories (Ire) | Katrina Partridge
(Aus) did not return to Ireland after his debut season but a case
could be made for him doing so in future. The son of Street Cry
(Ire) was champion first-season sire in his native Australia last
year and, from 43 runners in his sole northern hemisphere crop
he sired 11 winners, five of which were stakes winners. These
include the Italian Group 2 winner Telepathic Glances (Ire) as
well as Flying Visit (Ire) and Star Of Emaraaty (Ire), who are
Group 3 winners in Ireland and Britain, respectively.
Another of the young Kodiac (GB) stallions at stud, Kodi Bear
(Ire), joined Adaay in the top 10, with 17 winners from his 54
runners, which again was an encouraging debut for a sire with
79 first-crop foals. Plenty of stallion masters have Clive Cox to
thank for getting their youngsters off to a good start (think
Supremacy) but in the case of Rathbarry Stud's Kodi Bear, Cox
trained both the stallion and his best offspring to date, the
107-rated Cobh (Ire), winner of the listed Stonehenge S. and
third in the G2 Royal Lodge S.
As a grandson of Pivotal (GB) and son of Kyllachy (GB), Twilight
Son (GB) was always going to be a popular new recruit to
Cheveley Park Stud and, by number of first-crop winners, he is
third behind Mehmas and Adaay on 22. His sole stakes winner,
Aria Importante, won both the G3 Premio Primi Passi and listed
Eupili in Milan.

Ballylinch Stud not only has the globally popular Lope De Vega
(Ire) as its lynchpin but it also has some promising young
stallions on the way through, including New Bay (GB) who, from
a first crop of 77 foals, was represented by 43 runners and 12
winners in 2020. Encouragingly, this group includes four stakes
performers, among them the G2 Royal Lodge S. winner New
Mandate (Ire) and G3 Oh So
Sharp S winner Saffron
Beach (Ire). Unfortunately,
the gelded New Mandate
cannot be aimed at this
year's Classics but, being
out of an Authorized (Ire)
mare, one could reasonably
expect him to improve
further with age and
distance. Saffron Beach
looks a worthy Guineas
contender for Jane
Chapple-Hyam and her
step-brother Ben Sangster,
who races the filly in
partnership with his son
Oliver and James Wigan.
Haras de Bouquetot's Shalaa (Ire) was the toast of this crop as
his first foals and yearlings hit the sales, and he has sired 21
winners overall from his first northern hemisphere crop, two of
those coming in America and one in Kazakhstan. His best
European performers are the G2 Coventry third Saeiqa (GB) and
the 102-rated No Speak Alexander (Ire).
Just bubbling under the top 10 were Prince Of Lir (Ire), whose
13 winners include the G2 Norfolk S winner The Lir Jet (Ire), and
The Gurkha (Ire) on 14 winners.
As is often the case, the table is numerically dominated by
Irish-based stallions. In addition to those mentioned above, the
smaller British contingent includes Bobby's Kitten, whose 12
winners were led by Sheikh Hmadan's promising dual winner
Monaasib (GB), who was runner-up in the G2 Beresford S. With
Roaring Lion having met an early demise and Hawkbill having
been relocated to Japan, the Lanwades Stuyd resident leads the
charge for his successful American sire Kitten's Joy in Britain,
with Kameko having recently taken up stud duties at Tweenhills.
Also worth noting among the young German stallions is the
Deutsches Derby winner Isfahan (Ger), who, from only 10
starters, notched five winners, including Italian Group 3 winner

BOB HONEST IN SHAM By virtue of victories in the GI Kentucky Derby and in the
GI Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic and combined with a third
seven-figure success in the GI Haskell Invitational S., the
ownership group that campaigned leading Horse of the Year
hopeful Authentic (Into Mischief)--Spendthrift Farm LLC,
MyRaceHorse Stable, Madaket Stables LLC and Starlight Racing--
finished 2020 as the leading owner by earnings with a total of
$6,790,000. The partnership raced Authentic for his final four
races.
In total, Authentic won five of his seven starts in 2020 and led
all horses by North American earnings with $7,170,000 ahead of
the recently retired Tiz The Law (Constitution, $2,388,300),
GI Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf victress Tarnawa (Ire)
(Shamardal) and Eclipse Award candidate Improbable (City Zip).

We all trust that life must be better in 2021. But the
immediate question is whether it will be ‘Good’ or maybe MEHMAS AT THE DOUBLE
‘Sweet’? Emma Berry offers a closer look at 2020's first-crop stallions,

Right now, I'd settle for either. But it certainly looks an

auspicious coincidence that the first race to sharpen focus on
the Triple Crown trail--the opening leg of an adventure that
reliably sustains us year in, year out--should include, among just
five runners, one colt named Life Is Good and another out of
Life Is Sweet (Storm Cat).
Their respective trainers, Bob Baffert and John Shirreffs,
dominate the GIII Sham S. with two runners apiece. This, of
course, was the race Baffert aptly chose last year to show that
Authentic might just be the real deal. What a goofy animal he
remained then, almost colliding with the rail as he hesitated to
explore the overwhelming capacities lurking within. Despite
virtually pulling himself up in the stretch, he won by nearly eight
lengths: a spectacular overture to a campaign that will
presumably see him formally anointed, later this month, as
Horse of the Year.
The only colt ever to beat Authentic--if Swiss Skydiver
(Daredevil) will indulge us a fairly technical distinction--was
saddled by Shirreffs. Honor A.P. (Honor Code) seemed to do so
on merit, too, but fortune scowled at him thereafter.

As noted in our ongoing survey of Kentucky sires, Honor A.P.'s

subsequent derailment (in running that extraordinary race
behind Authentic in the Derby) does at least give breeders
access to perhaps the most physically bewitching Thoroughbred
of his crop at one-fifth the fee of Authentic.
Life Is Good arrives with a beguiling resemblance to Authentic,
as another son of Into Mischief to have started out winning a
sprint maiden at Del Mar in November. He did so in such
flamboyant fashion, in fact, that Breeders' Cup champion
Essential Quality (Tapit) has suffered the indignity of being
supplanted as the first horse named in the Derby futures pool.
Certainly Life Is Good seems able to melt the stopwatch with
little observable effort: the challenge here, much as was the
case with Authentic, is to start stretching the trademark Into
Mischief speed towards Classic distances. Baffert describes him
as very aggressive, and an attempt to get him to rate didn't
really come off in a workout before Christmas. But these
obviously remain very early days.

Success breeds success, and Baffert has earned the right to

become a standard destination for a $525,000 Keeneland
September machine like this. How interesting, then, to see Life
Is Good accompanied by a horse of a wildly unfamiliar profile:
Medina Spirit is by Protonico and was a $1,000 short yearling,
pinhooked by Christy Whitman for $35,000 as a 2-year-old back
at OBS this past summer. If he can upset in this race, he will give
breeder Gail Rice hope that 2021 may yet prove every bit as
remarkable as 2020, when Speech (Mr Speaker)--a filly she bred
from a $7,500 mare--won the GI Ashland S.

Anyhow, the force certainly remains with this record-breaking
barn, which also houses a monster with the potential to
dominate the older horses this year, judging from that
staggering comeback by Charlatan (Speightstown) in the
GI Runhappy Malibu S. As such, possibly Shirreffs can feel some
empathy with the horse whose memory is honored in this race.
What a time to be a self-effacing genius training in California!
Sham is famously thought to have run the second-fastest
Derby in history, but was unfortunately foaled in the same crop
as the fastest of them all in Secretariat. He came back,
moreover, with two front teeth dangling grotesquely from his
jaw after slamming his head against the gate. What a wonderful
horse he was: as statuesque as he was brave. Spared the
attentions of Big Red, Sham won the GI Santa Anita Derby in
1:47 flat. And how skillfully he was prepared for the Classics by
Frank 'Pancho' Martin, whose horsemanship was inherited by
his late son Jose, trainer of the flying Groovy (Norcliffe); and in
turn by his grandson Carlos--as evinced in the career of Grade I
winner Come Dancing (Malibu Moon), who missed almost her
whole sophomore year but has shown unfailing appetite as a
nine-for-19 millionaire.

Both Sham and Secretariat were out of Princequillo mares. So,

too, was Kris S.--the damsire of Life Is Sweet, saddled by
Shirreffs to win the GI Ladies' Classic the same year Zenyatta
(Street Cry {Ire}) beat the gentlemen at the Breeders' Cup.
For Shirreffs to try Life Is Sweet's son Waspirant (Union Rags) in
a Grade I straight after breaking his maiden speaks rather better
for his potential than did his performance on the day. Barnmate
Parnelli (Quality Road) apparently arrives on a more positive
curve, having run both Hot Rod Charlie (Oxbow) and Spielberg
(Union Rags)--rivals that have amplified the form in the
meantime--close before finally breaking his maiden. Cont. p5

Shirreffs saddled the disappointing favorite against Spielberg in
the GII Los Alamitos Futurity S., Red Flag (Tamarkuz), who had
previously romped in the GIII Bob Hope S. But one way or
another, it's good to see him with several youngsters standing
up to Baffert in his own backyard. None appears to have quite
the charisma of Honor A.P., from this remote vantage anyway,
but what I do know is that they are in the very best of hands.
The past five Sham winners include four subsequent Grade I
winners in Authentic, McKinzie (Street Sense), Gormley (Malibu
Moon) and Collected (City Zip): three for Baffert, one for
Shirreffs. You can be pretty confident, then, that what this field
lacks in quantity will be redeemed in quality. Earlier winners
Goldencents (Into Mischief) and Tapizar (Tapit) later confirmed
an affinity for the track in winning the GI Breeders' Cup Dirt
Mile; while Colonel John (Tiznow) returned to win the Santa
Anita Derby on his way to the GI Travers S.
But the name that resonates right now, from the roll of honor,
is 2006 winner Bob And John (Seeking the Gold). Though
actually named for Stonerside owner Bob McNair and manager
John Adger, this race reminds us that another Bob, for all his
fantastic achievements, is not the only show in town--even on
the West Coast. Yes, he's the greatest showman. But he will
absolutely respect the understated John who takes him on again
today.
In fact, if 2021 is really going to be a better year, then there

could hardly be a happier symbol than the induction of Shirreffs,
however appalled by the attention, into a Hall Of Fame whose
members will surely feel their own distinction diminished until it
is shared by him. In this era of industrial numbers, he remains a
professor of the old school, and recent inductees like Mark
Casse and Steve Asmussen have duly banked far more
prizemoney. Likewise Todd Pletcher, who becomes eligible for
induction this year. Per starter, however, Shirreffs has earned
$16,132 compared with scores of $18,043, $10,002 and $7,755
respectively for Pletcher, Casse and Asmussen. Take Zenyatta
out of the equation, moreover, and Shirreffs would still be at
$13,852.
The best measure of a champion is the rival who does not
permit him complacency, even in his own dominion. That was
true of Secretariat and Sham. And it's true of Bob and John.

Godolphin was second among leading money winners, with
$5,703,770 (80 wins from 361 starts), followed by Klaravich
Stables Inc., which earned $5,323,398 (70/272). End Zone
Athletics Inc. was the leading owner by wins, with 163 trips to
winner’s circle from 801 starters (20.3%), good for earnings of
$2,867,917.
After finishing second in 2018 and 2019, Steve Asmussen
topped all trainers by money won, sending out the winners of
422 races from 2,278 starts and earnings of $20,204,064. He
outdistanced Brad Cox (216 wins/903 starts, $18,983,832) and
Bob Baffert (94 wins/323 starts, $18,983,832).
Irad Ortiz, Jr. topped all jockeys by money won, with an even
300 winners from 1,266 mounts for earnings of $21,050,726.
Joel Rosario was second (194/1,052, $18,235,197) and Luis Saez
(268/1,398, $16,511,372). Ortiz was also the nation’s winningest
jockey of 2020, finishing 29 winners clear of Tyler Gaffalione and
Saez.

Pedigree Notes:
One of 43 worldwide black-type winners and 18 graded/group
winners, Hembree is bred on the exact same cross responsible
for 2008 GI Kentucky Oaks heroine Proud Spell, one of her sire’s
three Grade I/Group 1 winners. The same cross has also
produced additional graded winners Go Bro and Blended Citizen.
Hembree’s third dam was a full-sister to 1983
GI Spinaway S. victress Buzz My Bell, who would later go on to
become the dam of 1996 GI Kentucky Derby hero Grindstone
(Unbridled). Hembree has a newly turned 2-year-old half-sister

Parx invader Capo Kane was sent to the front from his rail
draw by Dylan Davis and led through an opening quarter in
:23.53. The bay traveled nicely on the far turn and hit the
quarter pole as Davis took a look to his right to see favored Swill
(Munnings) beginning to fade under a ride and Eagle Orb
mounting a three-wide rally. Capo Kane had plenty left,
however, and despite wandering some throughout the stretch
and showing some greenness, just as he did in his first two
attempts, increased his margin to the wire, earning 10 points on

Only two of the entrants in Gulfstream=s Janus S. had ever run
in a Grade I event and those two finished one-two. Both
Imprimis and Extravagant Kid were making their first starts since
off-the-board finishes in the Nov. 7 GI Breeders= Cup Turf Sprint.
It was a bumpy beginning--literally--in the Janus as both were
involved in some contact out of the gate. Imprimis got the
penultimate early spot as he tracked Extravagant Kid, who was
in fourth behind an early quarter of :21.09. Both were tipped to
the outside, with Imprimis at least five wide, and the two surged

together. They still had ground to make up after a breakneck
half in :43.22, but they got there just in time to fill out the
exacta in a three-horse photo.
Imprimis had an abbreviated campaign in 2020, making his

finishing first but disqualified to third after coming in down the
stretch. His next start--the GIII Runhappy Turf Sprint S. at
Kentucky Downs--resulted in a deadheat for the win. The
Breeders= Cup was his third and final effort for the year. He had
been threatening a big move in the race when he ran into traffic
and lost his action while hitting the brakes. Imprimis had also
won the GII Shakertown S. in 2019 and has three other black-
type wins to his name. The Janus marked his fifth lifetime start
at Gulfstream, each resulting in a trip to the winner=s circle. The
GIII Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint Feb. 13 is a possibility for the
7-year-old=s next start.
