Bridge Safety Standards (Parts 214 and 237)

49 CFR Part 237 mandates that most owners of railroad track that is supported by a bridge have a
bridge management program. 49 CFR Part 243 mandates that employees responsible for
implementation of a bridge management program must be trained in their respective duties in the
program and in fall protection (Part 214, subpart B). The training for Part 237 must be accomplished
in accordance with the requirements in Part 243 (every 3 years unless a shorter period is stipulated
by the railroad). However, Part 214, subpart B that addresses fall protection training for roadway
workers, must be accomplished annually. The Part 214, subparts A and C course is a prerequisite
for the training required in Parts 214, subpart B and 237
