Biomechanics and Medical Rehabilitation Lab

Biomechanics and Medical Rehabilitation Lab is focusing on two main

parts: biomechanics and rehabilitation.
The biomechanics part is essential where medical engineering students do
experiments for determining stress-strain curve using simple tension test
device, as they can test mechanical properties of the different biological
tissues, also they can test biomaterials that can be used or implanted in the
human body.
Brinell hardness test is one of the main test experiments in the biomechanics
lab as students can measure the hardness of the different biomaterials. In
addition, students are able to do fatigue testing using fatigue test device for
biomaterials to draw the stress – Number of fatigue cycles curve for any
biomaterial. This type of test is helpful to measure the fatigue life of any
biomaterial as many biomaterials are currently used in the human body and
facing fatigue loads for many years such as artificial discs.
Also, students are able to do vibration analysis and know the main key
factors affecting vibrations facing the human body. These types of mechanical
tests help students in the future to choose the right materials when they are
asked to design a new medical device or implant.
Gait analysis of the human body is studied using gait analysis testing
machine by the students which is concerned about studying style, manner or a
pattern of walking where loads on each leg are evaluated and the angle of the
leg movements as well can be calculated by the device itself.

The part of medical rehabilitation LAB

In the medical rehabilitation part we have five experiments by using several

instruments, software, and essential theoretical techniques. In the first
experiment students use Noraxon Treadmill, Bath scale, Measuring tape and
Sphygmomanometer and well known formulae to obtain significant body data
such that: surface area, density, volume, body fat, blood volume then they
take blood pressure and pulse rate during rest once and after doing an
exercise again.

The second experiment includes determination of radiated heat diathermy

from barred arm segment by applying Stefan-Boltzmann Law by using sensitive
electronic thermometer and wall thermometer.

The effects of sport in producing heat inside muscles at depth of 3 cm and

comparing between different methods of weight losing are obtained in the
third experiment in which students use Noraxon Treadmill and sensitive
electronic thermometer with the help of body data found in experiment 1.

The fourth experiment shows the effects of sport exercises in mass reduction
process and different methods of mass loosing are covered, while the last
experiment students analyze any variation in values of pressure or force for
nominated point in grip by using Grip displacement transducer assembly (DTA)
with Grip software. The results are used to assess and evaluate physiotherapy
treatment of patients.

The biomechanics and rehabilitation lab is focusing on the abet outcome 6

where students are encouraged to develop and conduct appropriate
Biomechanics and Medical Rehabilitation experimentation, analyze and
interpret data from these experiments, and use engineering judgment to draw
conclusions.
