MY JUNGLE ADVENTURE

Since I returned from my ten-day holiday in Peru, friends have asked me, “where have you been?” I love
answering, “Oh! I went to Peru, in South America!”

Tourists from other countries like to come to Peru because of the history and also to enjoy nature. Many
people come to climb mountains in the Cordillera Blanca in the Ancash Region, and many others visit
Peru's long Pacific coast or the Amazon jungle. Cuzco and Macchu Picchu are just two of the places
where lots of buildings built by the Incas are still standing after hundreds of years, and these are some
of the most visited places. The Incas were not the only tribe in Peru who left buildings and artifacts, but
they were the most powerful.

I went there with my parents. There were ten of us in the group but we’d never met each other before.
On the first day, we travelled with a guide for eight hours up the river to our jungle camp. It was so
exciting to be in the Amazon rainforest! Noisy parrots and monkeys filled the trees and I saw insects of
all sizes and colours on the paths around our tents.

We always felt safe when our guide, Luis, was with us. Luis could speak English, French and Spanish and
came from a village far away on the other side of the mountains. One day he took us down the river in a
wooden boat made from a single tree. Another day, he took us into the jungle and found all kinds of
unusual trees and flowers for us to look at. He even cooked a lovely sweet rice for us to eat before we
went to bed at night.

My holiday in Peru was a great adventure and I’ll never forget it.

ANNIE GARRET

Annie Garret is a successful TV sports presenter, but most people still think of her as the famous
women’s tennis champion who won several important competitions when she was younger. ‘As a child,
my dream was actually to become a ballet dancer – I didn’t even own a racquet until I was ten, and I
didn’t become really keen on playing tennis until I was fourteen,’ says Annie. She went on to college
where, despite playing tennis almost all the time, she left with an excellent degree. ‘I felt I owed to my
parents. They supported me through university and expected me to do well there – I didn’t feel I could
disappoint them.’

In a sport where most stars become famous as teenagers, Annie was unusual in being in her twenties
before she won any major titles. ‘When I was younger, I got very angry at competitions, shouting at
judges if I disagreed with them. That made me unpopular, especially with other tennis players. My
technique was just as good as theirs and I had a very encouraging coach at the time. The problem was in
my head – I just didn’t think I had what it takes to be a champion. That changed as I won more
competitions, and I was performing at my best by the age of twenty-six.’

Annie retired from professional tennis six years later, having achieved great success during that period.
‘It was a difficult decision. As you get near the end of your career, people always ask when you’re going
to stop. At the time, I wasn’t sure that I was actually ready to give up. But, looking back, I’m glad I
stopped when I did. You shouldn’t think too much about the past – just move on to the next thing.’
