Collaboration Plan

a. Project Team and Duties


PI XX will serve as project leader. She will coordinate with PI XX to manage the team’s budget and
supervise the project. She will collect data in years 1, 2, and 3, and will lead the preliminary data
analysis. She will participate in the writing of articles and the team’s book. With PI XX, she will lead
efforts in ongoing data analysis; together, they will oversee video production. PI XX expertise lies in
qualitative studies of technology and work. She has more than a decade’s experience managing large-
scale, multi-year, team-based field investigations. She has written one book with MIT Press on work
technologies, has won numerous best paper awards, has an upcoming book chapter (in P I X X ’ s
MIT Press volume) on big data in healthcare, and has produced two educational videos.

PI XX will lead the Indiana team, managing their budget. He will collect data in years 1, 2, and 3, and
will lead the development of policy- and practitioner-oriented materials. He will participate in the
writing of articles and the team’s book. With PI XX , he will lead efforts in ongoing data analysis;
together, they will also oversee the video production. XX is an expert in HIT and Human-Computer
Interaction, and has written extensively in these areas, including a book with Cambridge University Press
on Artificial Intelligence and a forthcoming edited volume on big data with MIT Press. He has led a
number of federally funded projects involving HIT, and has provided commentaries on this topic in
regional and national outlets such as The XXX. .

Co-PI XX will collect data in years 1, 2, and 3, and will lead the bulk of the external actor interviews.
He will participate in the writing of articles and the team’s book. Co-PI XX is the author of X X X
and the co-author of the most recent edition of XX. He has written extensively on the sociological and
organizational aspects of software development, and has supervised several dissertation projects on
innovation in HIT.

Co-PI XX will collect data in years 1, 2, and 3, and will lead the content analysis and the additional
organizational interviews. He will participate in the writing of articles and the team’s book. C O - P I
X X ’ s expertise lies in understanding complex socio-technical systems that span organizational
borders, such as open source software and the scientific software ecosystem (e.g., XXX), including metrics
for success and impact in open source (XX) and science (XX . He is an expert in understanding and
analyzing online discussions (e.g.,XX) and will lead our content analysis activities. Co-PI XX will draw on
his industry background in management consultancy information system implementation to lead
interaction with EMR consultants.

b. Cross-University Communication and Coordination


PI XX and PI XX are and will remain in constant email contact over the course of this research; the
full team likewise is in frequent contact. XX Univ will host a shared secure data management site where
the research team will be able to store documents, interview protocols, digital audio files, and interview
transcripts. The team will align frequent video/audio conferences with current project needs. We will
meet yearly at one of the two universities for an annual professional conference that all attend to review
progress and confirm plans. We have included domestic travel funds in both budgets for this purpose.
