SECTION 2
 THE TOPICS WILL APPEAR IN 2017
 BAND 8 SAMPLE ESSAYS

TOPIC 1 : EDUCATION
You should spend forty minutes on this task.

Present a written argument to an educated

audience on the following topic:

More and more students choose to go to

another country for their education, which
brings to them lots of difficulties and makes
them give up.

Give the reasons and your suggestion?

You should write at least 250 words.

Use your own ideas and experience to support your argument with relevant examples and evidence

SAMPLE ESSAY
A number of students head overseas full of honest enthusiasm and a sincere zeal to become
proficient in English. It is no surprise then that as soon as students get off the plane, they stop
speaking their mother tongue and do everything they can to master the new language.

Page 22
It only takes a few months however before the vast majority of students realize they are
waging a losing battle to overcome the odds of adapting to the new culture. Everything seems out of
place; the food is awful; no native speakers seem to have any interest in becoming friends, and worst
of all, they are afflicted with extreme loneliness. This is often referred to as culture shock instead of
enjoying their experience of studying overseas, students get depressed and some even decide to call it
quits and come home.

There are several ways we can help students get through this difficult process of adapting to
their new environment. Raising awareness of culture shock and the fact that it affects everyone is a
good start, and it also needs to be emphasized that it is just a phase will that ultimately pass. Students
often cope better when they have access to people with similar backgrounds, so students should be
encouraged to hang out with people from their own country at least some of the time. Finally, it is
essential that students keep in regular contact with friends and family back home, so that when they
feel down they will always have somebody to turn to.

In short, while studying abroad is often much tougher than expected, once students know that
they always have someone to turn to, they will have a much better chance of making their time abroad
more of an enjoyable, albeit challenging, experience.

Useful vocabulary:
1. Head overseas: đi sang nước ngoài. 5. The odds: tỷ lệ cược.
2. Honest enthusiasm: sự trung thực, nhiệt 6. Out of place: không còn, trống rỗng.
tình. 7. Afflicted with: bị ảnh hưởng
3. Sincere zeal: lòng chân thành nhiệt huyết. 8. Cope (with): đương đầu
4. Vast majority: đại đa số. 9. Turn to: dựa vào.

Page 23
TOPIC 2: SOCIETY
You should spend forty minutes on this task.

Present a written argument to an educated

audience on the following topic:

A lot of people today suffer from varying

levels of stress. What are the reasons and
how could this problem be solved?

You should write at least 250 words.

Use your own ideas and experience to support your argument with relevant examples and
evidence

SAMPLE ESSAY
Most people would say life is improving, except those in Africa or living in the throes of
religious conflicts. But at the same time, life is becoming ever more stressful, leading to tens of
thousands of suicides each year. It is high time that we pinpointed the causes and came up with
some solutions.

First of all, work is a main source of stress for most people. With the unemployment rate
running high in even the most affluent countries, job security is becoming less and less
guaranteed. To keep their jobs, people are compelled to work longer hours and achieve better
performances. Getting ahead in the workplace becomes our priority, to the extent that we think
about it all the time and can never really relax or take a break. Even for those with secure jobs,
promotions and better salaries are irresistible, forever coaxing them to try their uttermost.

Then, the relationship with a fellow human being also adds to one's stress. People are
becoming more isolated nowadays, not only from strangers but even from close relatives and
friends. Everyone is engrossed in his or her own affair with no energy for or interest in what
happens to other people. Real communication between people is on the decline. As a result,

Page 24
emotions get bottled up. People are more linked by economic interests than emotional needs.
Genuine friendship becomes hard to find; even marriages are purely based on financial
considerations. It seems that we face the world alone every day. No wonder people tend to feel
the whole weight of the world on their shoulders

In brief, while the right amount of pressure is often beneficial, the stress experienced by
most people is detrimental both physically and mentally. Work and material wealth are far
overrated and need to be put into their proper perspective. In addition, people need to improve
their relationship with others around them, having a colleague, a loved one, or a total stranger
by really communicating with and caring for each other.

Useful vocabulary
1. Stressful: căng thẳng 6. Compel: bắt buộc
2. In the throes of: trong nỗi khổ 7. Isolated: bị cô lập
của … 8. Uttermost: mức tối đa
3. Suicide: tự vận 9. Irresistible: không thể cưỡng lại
4. Pinpointed: xác định 10. Engrossed in: say mê
5. Affluent: giàu có 11. Detrimental: có hại

Page 25
TOPIC 3: TECHNOLOGY
You should spend forty minutes on this task.

Present a written argument to an educated

audience on the following topic:

Technology is becoming increasingly prevalent

in the world today. In the not too distant future,
technology will completely replace the teacher in
the classroom. Analyze both sides of this
argument?

You should write at least 250 words.

Use your own ideas and experience to support your argument with relevant examples and
evidence

SAMPLE ESSAY
The use of technology is increasing rapidly in the modern world. Growing technological
influence can even be seen in the classroom. The argument that technology will completely
replace the teacher in the classroom is a subject that is both supported and refuted by many.
Both sides of this argument will be analyzed before a reasoned conclusion is drawn.

Firstly, it is easy to see the progressive rate at which technology is able to mimic the
teaching abilities of human beings. For example, several iPhone applications are able to hold
the attention of young children for hours at a time, while concurrently teaching them things.
Thus, it is clear that on a small scale, machines can act as effective teachers. The possibility for
a robotic teacher in the future can therefore be seen.

However, on the other side of this argument, it must be remembered that a teacher
powered by artificial intelligence would have little to no control over its students. For example,
it is commonly understood that children require the watchful eye of a teacher to ensure that they

Page 26
are indeed completing their class work and not fooling around during class time. Unfortunately,
this is something that a robotic teacher simply cannot provide. Thus, this makes it clear why the
argument that technology will never completely replace the teacher in the classroom could also
be possible.

In summary, both sides of the argument regarding the possibility of a technologically

TOPIC 4: ENVIRONMENT
You should spend forty minutes on this task.

Present a written argument to an educated

audience on the following topic:

Fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas) are the

main sources in many countries, but in
some countries the use of alternative
sources of energy (wind energy and solar
energy) are encouraged. To what extent do
you think it is a positive or negative
development?

You should write at least 250 words.

Use your own ideas and experience to support your argument with relevant examples and
evidence

SAMPLE ESSAY
After the Industrial Revolution, the nation who conquers the world will conquer the
world energy at the same time. Some people believe that traditional fuels, including coal,
oil, and gas, are the main sources rather than alternative sources like wind energy and solar
energy. Personally, the use of alternative sources of energy should be encouraged and
spread all over the world.

Admittedly, fossil fuels as the main sources make human beings live more effectively
and efficiently. A large amount of energy in fossil fuels is applied to the industrial
production and it seems that the process of making energy from fossil fuels is employed by
most countries. Nonetheless, traditional resources will dry up in a foreseeable future.
Human beings must find an alternative way to continue civilization.

Page 28
The advantages of alternative sources of the energy can be divided into two aspects:
Firstly, using alternative sources reduce the contamination of the environment. Namely,
most new energies are green. Secondly, alternative sources of energy that are regarded as
sustainable sources of energy are more likely to meet the massive demands of economic and
cultural development in modem society. However, it is often considered that using
alternative sources of energy such as nuclear energy is a quite dangerous thing for human
beings and our planet. Some other alternative sources of energy like wind energy and solar
energy are not quite available for production for the sake of expensive payment.

To conclude the use of the alternative sources may contribute to social development
and push the whole world into a new dynasty, which does no harm to the environment and
has high effectiveness. Only by this can we break through the bottleneck of the energy crisis.

Useful vocabulary
1. Conquer: chinh phục 6. Sustainable sources: nguồn bền vững
2. Admittedly : phải thừa nhận rằng 7. Massive: to lớn
3. Dry up: cạn kiệt 8. Bottleneck: cổ chai, thắt nút khó khăn
4. Foreseeable: đoán trước được ( nghĩa chuyển).

5. Contamination: sự ô nhiễm 9. Energy crisis: khủng hoảng năng lượng

TOPIC 5: GLOBALIZATION
You should spend forty minutes on this task.

Present a written argument to an educated

audience on the following topic:

Many people think that countries have a moral

obligation to help each other, while other
argue that the aid money is misspent by the
governments that receive it, so the
international aid should not be given to the
poor countries in the world.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

You should write at least 250 words.

Use your own ideas and experience to support your argument with relevant examples and
evidence

SAMPLE ESSAY
Billions of dollars each year are given out as aid to poor countries in the hope of relieving the
sufferings of their people. Whenever and wherever natural disasters strike, people from all other
countries never hesitate to offer help and assistance to the victims. However, some people fear these
kinds of good will and generosity are being abused by some governments. Is this practically true?

Actually, there is no point in giving aid because aid money is misused and n reaches the intended
recipients. It is the poor that need help. Unfortunately, due to their social and economic status, they
have no access to foreign aid once it is brought in through official channels. Some developing countries
receive millions of dollars each year, but thousands of people there still starve to death. The cause of
this, as revealed in some independent studies, is that a large portion of the donation was spent on the
army and very little went to the poor. More alarmingly, international aid sometimes, instead of
alleviating sufferings, backfires on the people if the money is used by the dictators to consolidate their

Page 30
rule. The government might use the money to build its army and police force; those with close ties with
government officials might use a portion of it to seek profits for themselves, often at the expense of public
interest.

However, notwithstanding possible misuses, abuses or side effects, rich countries are morally
responsible for assisting poor nations. Developed countries accumulate great wealth not only by the
hard work and ingenuity of their people but, to some degree, at the expense of other countries’ economic
well-being. For instance, many former colonies were exploited economically by former empires such as
Britain and France and are still plagued by unfair trade relations, whereby they serve as suppliers of
natural resources and markets for expensive end products. Besides, rich countries often call themselves
civilized nations. If they are to really live up to their names, how could they refuse to aid the poor who
are languishing in poverty and misery? Creatures of a kind often help each other wherever possible,
which is happening the animal world in all the time. As human beings, how can we stand by when other
people are struggling merely to survive? Our human decency forbids it.

In brief, as Bertrand Russell puts it: there are two kinds of tragedy, one caused by nature and the
other by ourselves. We are now in a position to conquer most natural disasters if the rich and powerful
nations choose to do so. Also, I would like to see measures taken to prevent the misuse of international
aid.

Useful vocabulary
1. Relieve: xoa dịu 6. Notwithstanding: tuy nhiên
2. Hesitate: do dự 7. Ingenuity: sự khéo léo
3. Misused: lạm dụng 8. Plague: gây tệ hại cho

TOPIC 6: TOURISM
You should spend forty minutes on this task.

Present a written argument to an educated audience on the following topic:

Some argue that governments should invest

more in tourism as this industry can create
more opportunities for employment and
economic growth. Others argue that
tourism has a negative impact on local
areas and should be avoided where possible.
Discuss both views while giving your own
opinion.

You should write at least 250 words.

Use your own ideas and experience to support your argument with relevant examples and evidence

SAMPLE ESSAY
It is clear that tourism is one of the world's largest industries and that it will probably
continue to grow at a rapid pace over the next few decades. Most governments are naturally
eager to invest in tourism as there is a strong possibility that growth in this sector is likely to lead
to greater national economic growth. However, valid arguments be can made that would suggest
that tourism may not be such a good idea after all.

It is true indeed that tourism does create new jobs, and there are plenty of examples of
countries such as Thailand and Vietnam where unemployment seemed to vanish as hordes of
tourists began to pour in. Having said that, these jobs were perhaps not the most desirable forms
of employment a government would like to see; most work in the tourism industry tends to be both
part-time and seasonal. This is typical of work found at hotels, bars or restaurants, and

Page 32
opportunities for professional development or managerial experience is basically close to nil for
most employees.

The potential drawbacks of tourism, meanwhile, can be rather catastrophic for the
average people that actually live in tourist areas. It is a daunting prospect to see all these tourists
arriving in by the thousands to use up the local area's hotel accommodation and housing, and
suddenly the price of property has rocketed upwards. A good illustration of this might be Sri Lanka
in the late 1990s, where, as soon as foreign tourists began to flow into the country, property prices
quadrupled, and locals found it almost impossible to buy a decent home without going into debt.
Inflation is also a serious problem in tourist areas, and it is not unusual for normal food prices to
double or even triple for local people during "peak season".

In short, although tourism may sound like a fantastic pipe dream for governments world-
wide, we have to remember that there may be a nasty underbelly to this nascent type of industry As
a matter of fact, jobs may be created, but they tend to be seasonal and underpaid, while the native
population is subjected to skyrocketing property prices and rampant inflation.

Useful vocabulary
1. Vanish : tan biến 6. Daunting prospect : viễn cảnh
2. Hordes of tourists: đoàn du lịch khó khăn

3. Close to nil : gần như không 7. Skyrocketing: tăng vọt

4. Drawbacks: điểm yếu 8. Quadrupled: tăng gấp bốn lần

5. Catastrophic :thảm khốc

TOPIC 7 : MEDIA
You should spend forty minutes on this task.

Present a written argument to an educated

audience on the following topic:

Radio will be replaced by other forms of

mass media such as television or the
Internet. Do you agree or disagree?

You should write at least 250 words.

Use your own ideas and experience to support your argument with relevant examples and evidence

SAMPLE ESSAY
It is some people's pastime to make predictions about the future. But actually, no one can be
absolutely certain about what tomorrow will bring. As per my experience, some aspects of our life
change, but slowly. Listening to the radio, for instance, will remain with us for a long time to come.

Certainly, radio is not likely to be replaced soon or at all because it is the most convenient
way to acquire information. We do not have to be literate and we do not have to stare at a screen.
Even if one is visually impaired, his or her enjoyment of it will not be affected a bit. Unlike television
or even newspapers, radio is never intrusive. We can focus on our main task and listen to the radio
simultaneously without being distracted. Its presence is like that of a gentleman, ever in the
background and responsive to our needs.

Also, by providing audio information only, radio leaves much room for imagination. When we
watch television, we passively take in the moving images. Though pictures are more direct and
detailed, they fail to excite our thoughts or imagination. The photo of the Great Wall can show us how
it looks like from the angle of the photographer, whereas our imagination can conjure up a really
majestic construction (though perhaps inaccurate), its history, its function, and its builders

Page 34
there is no limit to our imagination. To really experience something in a vicarious way, one has to
imagine it.

On a more tangible side, radio has its unique advantages. It is cheap and portable. Some
radios can now be fitted into a pen and carried around all the time, conveying a variety of programs.
The best radios also do not cost much.

In a word, it is undeniable that radio is facing increasing competition from other forms of
media. It needs to improve in terms of program variety and reception quality. But its longevity is
beyond doubt.

Useful vocabulary
1. Convenient: thuận tiện. 6. Majestic: hùng vĩ.
2. Acquire information: tiếp nhận thông 7. Vicarious: làm thay người khác.

TOPIC 8: CULTURE
You should spend forty minutes on this task.

Present a written argument to an educated

audience on the following topic:

There are many different types of music in

the world today. Why do we need music? Is
the traditional music of a country more
important than the international music
that is heard everywhere nowadays?

You should write at least 250 words.

Use your own ideas and experience to support your argument with relevant examples and evidence

SAMPLE ESSAY
It is true that a rich variety of musical styles can be found around the world. Music is a
vital part of all human cultures for a range of reasons, and I would argue that traditional
music is more important than modern, international music.

Music is something that accompanies all of us throughout our lives. As children, we are
taught songs by our parents and teachers as a means of learning language, or simply as a form of
enjoyment. Children delight in singing with others, and it would appear that the act of singing in a
group creates a connection between participants, regardless of their age. Later in life, people’s
musical preferences develop, and we come to see our favorite songs as part of our life stories.
Music both expresses and arouses emotions in a way that words alone cannot. In short, it is
difficult to imagine life without it.

In my opinion, traditional music should be valued over the international music that has
become so popular. International pop music is often catchy and fun, but it is essentially a
commercial product that is marketed and sold by business people. Traditional music, by

Page 36
contrast, expresses the culture, customs and history of a country. Traditional styles, such as
...(example)..., connect us to the past and form part of our cultural identity. It would be a
real pity if pop music became so predominant that these national styles disappeared.

In conclusion, music is a necessary part of human existence, and I believe that

traditional music should be given more importance than international music.

Useful vocabulary
1. Predominant: chiếm ưu thế
2. Preferences: ưu đãi
3. Arouses emotions: khơi gợi cảm xúc, khuấy động cảm xúc
4. Delight in: vui sướng
5. Commercial product : sản phẩm thương mại
6. Cultural identity: bản sắc văn hóa

TOPIC 9: CRIME
You should spend forty minutes on this task.

Present a written argument to an educated

audience on the following topic:

Some people who have been in prison

become good citizens later, and it is often
argued that these are the best people to
talk to teenagers about the dangers of
committing a crime. To what extent do
you agree or disagree?

You should write at least 250 words.

Use your own ideas and experience to support your argument with relevant examples and evidence

SAMPLE ESSAY
It is true that ex-prisoners can become normal, productive members of society. I
completely agree with the idea that allowing such people to speak to teenagers about their
experiences is the best way to discourage them from breaking the law.

In my opinion, teenagers are more likely to accept advice from someone who can speak
from experience. Reformed offenders can tell young people about how they became involved in
crime, the dangers of a criminal lifestyle, and what life in prison is really like. They can also dispel
any ideas that teenagers may have about criminals leading glamorous lives. While adolescents
are often indifferent to the guidance given by older people, I imagine that most of them would be
extremely keen to hear the stories of an ex-offender. The vivid and perhaps shocking nature of
these stories is likely to have a powerful impact.

The alternatives to using reformed criminals to educate teenagers about crime would
be much less effective. One option would be for police officers to visit schools and talk to young

Page 38
people. This could be useful in terms of informing teens about what happens to
lawbreakers when they are caught, but young people are often reluctant to take advice
from figures of authority. A second option would be for school teachers to speak to their
students about crime, but I doubt that students would see teachers as credible sources of
information about this topic. Finally, educational films might be informative, but there
would be no opportunity for young people to interact and ask questions.

In conclusion, I fully support the view that people who have turned their lives
around after serving a prison sentence could help to deter teenagers from committing
crimes.

Useful vocabulary:
1. Reformed offenders = rehabilitated prisoners: những tội nhân đã được cải tạo
2. Adolescent: thanh thiếu niên
3. Have a powerful impact = have a huge influence: có một ảnh hưởng mạnh mẽ
4. Lawbreakers = offenders = criminals: tội nhân
5. Figures of authorities = authority figures: nhân vật có quyền lực
6. Reluctant to :miễn cưỡng
7. Speak from experience: nói từ những trải nghiệm

TOPIC 10: WORK
You should spend forty minutes on this task.

Present a written argument to an educated audience on the following topic:

Some people believe that competition

among coworkers can drive a
company forward. Others say that
such competition leads to a less happy
workplace and should therefore be
reduced.

Discuss these two views while giving

your own opinion.

You should write at least 250 words.

Use your own ideas and experience to support your argument with relevant examples and evidence

SAMPLE ESSAY
Competition in the workplace is, for most of us, just a fact of life. More and more, we do
not see our coworkers just as friends, but also as potential rivals in our push to the top. As
uncomfortable as this type of environment might be for an average worker, the fact is that
companies who push their employees tend to be profitable, and right now that means they are at
the very least not going bankrupt.

It is true that a less competitive work environment generally makes for a more laid-back,
pleasant environment, which, given the right set of circumstances, might even lead to more
creativity on the part of the workers. A decade ago, it was commonplace for management to talk
up the spirit of teamwork and friendly cooperation based on this idea.

Last year in Ireland, hundreds of companies filed for bankruptcy, and many more are
expected this year. The same story is being repeated all over the world and there are now millions

Page 40
of young, highly skilled workers desperate to get a job. In the current climate, companies are
being forced to constantly cut wages, lay off workers in large numbers and break up their unions.

One thing every manager learns in business school is that fostering a strong sense of
competition among coworkers can be a very effective way of increasing a company's viability.
When employees sense a promotion is up for grabs, or that someone in their department is about
to be laid off, they naturally work harder, stay in the office longer hours and generally do
everything they can to impress their boss.

With most companies out there fighting just to stay afloat, any way profitability can be
raised, even if it does affect employee morale, is certainly a far more urgent matter now.

Useful vocabulary:
1. Laid-back = relaxed: thư giản, nhẹ nhàng
2. Potential rival: đối thủ tiềm năng
3. Circumstance: trường hợp
4. Afloat: nổi lên trên, bề trên
5. Desperate: tranh đấu
6. Company's viability: khả năng tồn tại của công ty
7. Spirit of teamwork = team spirit: tinh thần đồng đội

TOPIC 11: GOVERNMENT
You should spend forty minutes on this task.

Present a written argument to an educated

audience on the following topic:

Many people prefer to watch foreign films

rather than locally produced films. Why could
this be? Should governments give more
financial support to local film industries?

Discuss these two views while giving your own opinion.

You should write at least 250 words.

Use your own ideas and experience to support your argument with relevant examples and evidence

SAMPLE ESSAY
It is true that foreign films are more popular in many countries than domestically
produced films. There could be several reasons why this is the case, and I believe that
governments should promote local film-making by subsidizing the industry.

There are various reasons why many people find foreign films more enjoyable than the
films produced in their own countries. Firstly, the established film industries in certain countries
have huge budgets for action, special effects and to shoot scenes in spectacular locations.
Hollywood blockbusters like ‘Avatar’ or the James Bond films are examples of such
productions, and their global appeal is undeniable. Another reason why these big-budget films
are so successful is that they often star the most famous actors and actresses, and they are made by
the most accomplished producers and directors. The poor quality, low-budget filmmaking in many
countries suffers in comparison.

In my view, governments should support local film industries financially. In every

country, there may be talented amateur film-makers who just need to be given the opportunity to

Page 42
prove themselves. To compete with big-budget productions from overseas, these people need
money to pay for film crews, actors and a host of other costs related to producing high-quality
films. If governments did help with these costs, they would see an increase in employment in the
film industry, income from film sales, and perhaps even a rise in tourist numbers. New Zealand,
for example, has seen an increase in tourism related to the 'Lord of the Rings' films, which were
partly funded by government subsidies.

In conclusion, I believe that increased financial support could help to raise the
quality of locally made films and allow them to compete with the foreign productions that
currently dominate the market.

Useful vocabulary:
1. Domestically produced films: phim được sản xuất trong nước
2. Local film-making: làm phim trong nước
3. Global appeal: sức hút toàn cầu
4. Amateur film-makers: các nhà làm phim nghiệp dư
5. Subsidize: trợ giá
6. Huge budget: ngân sách khổng lồ
7. Blockbuster: bom tấn

TOPIC 12: WOMEN
You should spend forty minutes on this task.

Present a written argument to an educated audience

on the following topic:

Some countries allow women to join the armed

forces, while some others think that armed forces
such as navy or army do not suit women. Do you
agree or disagree?

Discuss these two views while giving your own opinion.

You should write at least 250 words.

Use your own ideas and experience to support your argument with relevant examples and evidence

SAMPLE ESSAY
In ancient times, women were thought to bring bad luck to the military and were not
allowed anywhere near the army. Nowadays, a small number of women work in organizations
affiliated to the armed forces, but mainly involved in the logistics or other civilian work. As far as
I am concerned, the army or navy is not suited for the fair sex.

As matter of fact, a life in the army is physically demanding for a woman. Indeed, many
men can hardly cope with the vigorous training and drilling. It is true that we have goes against
women’s nature. Being a soldier, we must learn how to kill other people. Most women would
readily learn bow to defend themselves but would baulk when it comes to killing. Many are
disturbed by the sight of blood and unable to handle a gun or dagger. Only under extreme
circumstances would they find the nerve to pull the trigger. Only very few women can make good
soldiers.

Additionally, the psychological effects of a military career could be devastating.

Combating experience is traumatic for most people. Many veterans suffer from post-war

Page 44
syndrome. The bloodiness and cruelty of war often haunts them for the rest of their lives despite
their efforts to put the past behind. Even in time of peace, soldiers are trained for war. Daily
exposure to the violence and harshness, which is routine in the army, may cause damage to
women's mental health.

To conclude, war and fighting may be mankind's unavoidable folly. By and large, men are
its executors and victims. It is sad enough that men are being exposed to the worst in mankind:
cruelty, violence, wickedness, and so on. Let us spare our fair sex, as much as possible, the evil of
the world. We must not all become desensitized and dehumanized. Some of us need to remain
caring and gentle. The female is a balancing factor toward the good. Our children need to have at
least one parent who is loving and considerate.

Useful vocabulary
1. Baulk: ngần ngại 7. Combating experience: kinh nghiệm đấu
2. Vigorous: mạnh mẽ tranh

3. Affiliate: giao thiệp 8. Traumatic: đau đớn

4. Sight of blood : cảnh tượng máu me 9. Veteran: cựu chiến binh

SECTION 3
PHRASES/ SENTENCES TO AVOID
1. Every coin has two sides

This is a wrong phrase; the correct one is "two sides of the same coin. However, I encourage you to
avoid this. Although it is an expression in English, it is now quite old fashioned. And the majority of
those who use it are English learners. It was not particularly academic and overused by the
candidates in the IELTS exam. Therefore, it will not help your performance.

2. With the development of science and modern technology

Here are common mistakes my students often made as they wrote on topic “TECHNOLOGY”. If we
are doing an in-depth essay on science, technology, it would be more appropriate. In that case, you
should rewrite them:

 Conspicuously, new technologies have had an influence on…

 Technology has had an enormous impact on…

3. “In the modern era”, or “Since the dawn of time…”

These are common phrases are commonly used in Literature or documentary. We should not use
them in IELTS writing. Moreover, the majority of questions IELTS Writing Task 2 will focus on
current issues, so adding these phrases is not necessary.

4. It can broaden a person’s horizons…; there are good grounds to

argue in favor of…; it cannot be denied that…; the
aforementioned arguments offer insights into vindications for the
impression that…

Page 46
Those are interesting phrases. However, abusing them has made examiners think that we are using
the memorized phrases.

5. This essay will discuss both sides and give an opinion at the
end.
This sentence grammatically and semantically is not wrong but it is not appreciated because of some
reasons. First of all, this thesis statement is just in brief without pointing out the gist that we would
conduct in the following paragraphs. Secondly, it is almost a memorized sentence- a secure solution
for those who do not know how to write a reasonable thesis statement. Besides that the examiner will
not appreciate due to its own simple structure that cannot show the ability of the writer in a key
component of the article. Finally, we should have remembered that “Discuss both sides and give an
opinion” was the phrase used in the question, and as well as reviews on a repeat would not be
judges appreciated.

6. This is a highly controversial issue

I would like to emphasize that we should evade those extreme terms. Controversial means causing a
lot of angry public discussion and disagreement while IELTS Writing focuses mainly on everyday
issues. In that case, we should use “ a debatable issue”

7. I reckon
Please avoid this because it is too conversational and used only in informal writing and speaking

8. As I said before
This phrase is commonly used in Speaking instead of Writing

9. There has been heated debate (about something)

Be a little careful with the “ a heated debate”. Because it is one of those days that people become
emotional, very strong debate about the principles they believe in, or is against, and phrases more
commonly used and used interchangeably with minor problems (eg, "there is a lively debate about
home cooking" inappropriate as this debate is difficult to 'hot'). If we use it, make sure it is
something that really has the ability to generate a heated debate - legalization of marijuana, for
example, or death.

Page 47
10. The point that I am trying to make
The first problem is the use of the word "I" - avoid using personal pronouns where possible. The
other problem is "trying to make 'shows your opinion, to that point, is not very clear. This change to'
The relevant point is 'or' the main points '

11. The crux of the discussion is….

It must be the good one for speaking not writing any longer. We should use “ One of the primary
issues is…”
