Daves > Imam Timidht rahmatullShy ‘alalh narrates the felling Hach, with hs chal of narrator, In le nts Umme Salmah radivallahy ‘anhS said, ‘I never saw RasGlulléh a fast two months consecutively except for Sha’bin and Ramadi’ ‘Abi “isd (Imim Tirmidhi) says, "The Hadith of Umme Salmah rediyaliahu ‘anhd Is a tlesan tadith ?. This Hadith has alco being narrated from Umme Salmah, who narrates from “Aishah radiyalléhu ‘anh8 who says, "I ever saw RasOlullah s fast as much as He used to fast uring the month of Sha’bin. With the exception of 3 {fem days, He fasted the entire month. Infact, he used to {ast the entire month’. Ibnul Mubérak rafmatulldh ‘aieih has commented upon this Hat in the following manner: In the speech of the Arabs, It Is permissible to say that “a person has fasted te entire month’ if he only fasted a major portion of it Tt ls commonly sald, "A cartain person stood up the entire night’ Tt is possible that he may have partaken of supper and was occupied in some other tasks af wall during the course of the night. It ‘Seems that Tbnul Mubérak has regarded both these ‘Abcith to be in total conformity to each other. He says, “The meaning of this Hedith is that He used to fast a ‘major portion of this month’. End of the speech of imém ‘Tiemidhi rabymatulsh) ‘alain. > H&ftz Mundhirt also mentions the following Hadith In Targib wa Tarhib: Usémah bin Zald says, “T enquired, O! Rasdlullah 1 0 not notice you fasting in other months as I see you fast In Sha'b3n?" He repled, “This is a month, in which ‘many people are headless, It accurs between Rajab and Hasan — 2 Hadith whose chain of narration is sound. No accusation hae been levelled against any narrator nether has thls [beth been narrated from enly one source ~ Translator Pino Raman. This is a month in which the ‘aml (deeds) are ralsed up to Allah. I desire that my ‘amél be ‘alsed up whilst Tam fasting’. Narrated by Nasa. End of uote. I (Movin Maki) say, ‘Imam Abymed bin Hambal has also narrated this Hadith in his Musnac Hafiz Mundhir! algo mentions In Targib wat Tarhtb: ‘Ummul Mu'minin “Aisha radivalléhu ‘enh8 narrates that ‘Nabi a used to fast during the entire month of Sha’bsn. She enquired, "O! Rastl of Aléh, Is Sha‘ban the most beloved month unto you for fasting?” He replied, ‘During this month, Alldh records the names of all those people who will dle during that year. T love that my Geath comes to me whilst lam fasting”. Narrated by AbO. Yalé. alone. His sanad {chain of narration) Is sound. Imam Suydi! rahmatullahl ‘alah mentions in Durrut manthar: i Khatib and Ibn WajjSr narrate that ‘Aishah radivalléhu ‘anhd said, ‘RasGlullsh used to fast during the entire ‘month of Sha’ban, to such an extent that He used to join It to the month’ of Ramadan. With the exception of Sha’ban, He never fasted for a complete month. T enquired, "OI Rasdlulah a, Is Sha'bén the most beloved ‘month unto you for fasting?’ He replied, ‘Yes, 01 “Alshah, No soul dles during any year except that His appointed time is recorded In Sharban. Therefore, I love that my ‘appointed time be recorded whilst T om occupied in the worship of my Rabb and whilst I am Involved in good deeds’ ‘The words of Ibn Naijér are: ‘O! “Aisha, verily the angel of death records, during this month, the names of those ‘whom he is going to seize. 1 do not love that my na be transcribed except whilst I am fasting’. Paw? > Imam SuyOti rahmatullahi alain mentions in Durrul Manthor: bn Mardawiyyah and Ibn “Asakir narrate from “Alshah ‘adivallahu‘anhS, who says, *Rashlullah # never fasted @s much es He used to fast during the month of Sha’ban. This was because the souls cf the living are transcribed amongst the (list of the) dead. “Aman sometimes prepares for marriage whilst his name hes been raised amongst the dead. ‘Another Intends to Perform Haj) whilst his name has been raised amongst the deat ‘There Is no doubt that the night as well as the day ofthe 15% of Sha‘ban are Included in the generality of these Absdith “and others similar” to. them. Therefore, RasOlullah a has not prohibited the “idat of this night or the fast of this day. Yes, there Is evidence from Rasdluliéh where he (s) has prohibited fasting after the 15" of Sha’ban. Some ‘Ulama have interpreted this Heatti (differently) and have discarded it bosed upon other authentic ‘Anédith. Nevertheless, there Is. no Conclusive prohibition concerning the fast of the 15° of SSha'bain itself. In fact, the 15” of Sha’ban forms part of the Ayydm Bid’. Its mustehab to fast during these days ‘as Rastlullah i has encouraged it, Ahadith regarding the 15" of Sha’ban itself 1 have also compiled a few Mubsrak AbSalth pertaining to the vires of the night of the 15° of Sha’ban and the fast of the following day. Thus, the emphasis upon the adherence {to good deeds curing this night and the fast of this day only Increases, Initially, we will mention, through the grace and tauriq of AllBh 8, those AhBdith related to this discussion. Thereafter, 2 Ayam Bid = 13, 14° and 159 of avery Ilémic month — Translator ros we will mention some narrations of the Safar (pious Predecessors) ie. the Sohabah 4, Tablin and Tab-tabiin Fabmatullah ‘alaihim, 2s well 95 the views ofthe "Ulam. 2. HSfiz Mundhirl_ mentions the following Hadith in Targib wa Tarhib: Mu'éz s narrates that Rastlullah # ‘sald, ‘Allah 3% looks with special mercy towards the entire creation during the night of the 15° of Sha‘ban ‘and forgives all his servants with the exception of a ‘mushrik (polythelst) and person harbouring enmity Clowards others). Hafiz Mundhie says, ‘Tabrdnt as well as Ibn Hibban in his ‘Sahih have narrated this Hadith. End of quotation. 1 (Mouland Maki) say, “imam Styat! has also narrated ‘his Health In ure’ Manthor. "Hénz Harthaml after mentioning this Hadith in Majma‘uz Zawald (vol.8 po-65) s0ys, "Tabréni has narrated it in Kabir ond Awsat and the chain of narrators are Sahih (sound and authentic). 2. Hafiz Mundhist also narrates In Targhb wa Tarhib: Imam Ahmed narrates from "Abdullah fbn ‘Amr that Rashlullan ® said, "Allah @ looks towards His creation with special mercy during the 15 night of sha‘ban and forgives all His servants with the exception of two (persons); a person who harbours hatred and a murderer’ 1 (Mouland Maki) say, HANz Ibn Rajab Hambalf has also mentioned it In Latalul “Ma‘érif. the footnote ‘commentator, SOwas, says, "The reference of this Hadith Is Musnad Ahmad (vol.2’ pg.176) and the chain, of narration Is. authentic. End of quotation. I (Moulénd ‘MakKd) say, HaMiz Holtham, after mentioning this Hadith in Majma'uz Zawé-d (vol p9.65) says, Ahmad has narrated It. However, Ibn Lahi-ah, who ls regarded as Layyinul Hadith (lax in his narration of Hedith) eppesrs Inthe chain of narration. The other narrators are all Dino Thigdt (soundy. End of quotation. 1 (Mouldnd Makki) say, Albani has also narrated this Hedfth in. Sifsiatul ‘Anddlth Sotihah (vol). After discussing the chain of harration and the views of the “Ulam8, he concludes In the following manner, “Therefore this Hadith Is Hasan’ End of quote. Hafiz Ibn Rajab Hambali mentions In Latsiful Ma- rif, thn Mijah has narrated from ABO MOsd that Rasdlulldh 2 sald; ‘Verly Allah 3 focuses His attention (fowards His creation) during the night of the 15" of ‘Shab and forgives His entire creation except for & ‘mushrik(polytheist) and a person who holds enmity’. ‘The commentator Ysin Sdwas mentions In the footnote: (1390) Chepter on Igdmatua Sal, section on ‘what hhas been narrated concerning the 15% night of Sha'ban’. Albani has also mentioned It In Sabih bn MAJah (vt po 233). End of quote. 1 (Moulnd Maki) say, ImBm SbyOtt has also mentioned len Burr and commented, Baihagt has also narrated it from AbG Masa Atari». HSfiz NOrud Din Halthamt mentions in Majma’uz Zawd'id: Hagrat “Abd. Hurairah @ narrates. that Rasdlulldh # said, ‘When the night of the 15” of Sha’ban appears, Allah 3 forgives all His servants except for 3 ‘mushrik' and a person who harbours enmity’. He further mentions, Baz-28r has also narrated this Hadith. Hishém lon "Abdur-Rahman appears in the chain of narration. 1 ‘am unaware of him. The rest of the chain is ound. Imm SdyOtl mentions In Durre Manthdr: Balhact hhas narrated from AbO Tha'labah Khushant that Nabi a sald, ‘When the ight of the 15” of Shas appears, Allah 3 turns. towards His creation and forgives the believers, gives respite to the non-bellevers and leaves the people who harbour malice to thelr malice until they forgo i 1 (Moulin Maki) say, Shaikh Gimart_ has also mentioned this Hadith in Husndi ayn and sald, Tabranit {nd Baihaql have also narrated this Hadith. Balheq! says, “Te (this Hadith) Is narrated by Makhl and AbO Tha‘labah ‘and Is, thus, completely mursol”. End of quote. 6. Shalkh Muhaddith Gimari mentions in his booklet Husnul Bayan: Baz-28r and Balhagl have narrated from Aba @akr Siddiq + that Nabi & sald, "Alls descends to the lowest heaven during the night of the: 415 of Sha'bén and forgives the entire creation except for a mushrik and one who harbours enmity in his heart. He (Shaikh Gimérf) says, “There Is no objection in the chain of narration, as mentioned by HaRz Mundhie". End of quote. 1 (Moulin Maki) say, Hafiz Haithamt has also narrated a Similar Hadith In Majmaruz Zawa-id and commented in the following manner: Baz-z8r has also narrated It, however; inthe chain of narration "Abdul Malik. Ibn “Abdul Malik appears. Ibn ABI Hatim has mentioned him In Jarh wa Ta‘, but has not deemed him as weak. The reat of the chain is sound. End of quote. 7. HAfiz Haithamt mentions the following Hadith in Majma'uz zawa-id: “aw ibn Malik narrates that Rasdlullsh @ sald, ‘Allah 3¢ tums towards His creation during the 15 night of Sha’b8n and forgives all of them except for a mushiik land one who harbours enmity’ Mursal — a narration wherein a TSbIT narrates a statement or ‘action of Rasdhlih ae. he does rot mention from whicn Sab3bt fhe heard ie from, thus, tere exists 8 gop In the chain of narration wransiator Dowie Thott He (i18nz Haitham)) cays, Baz-zir has also narrated this Hadith however, “Abdur-Rahman Ibn Zly8d ibn An‘um appears in the chain of narration. Ahmed ibn Salih has deemed him as sound. The majority of the Imams have Considered him as @ weak narrator. Ibn Lahi-an IS Considered as Layyinul-Hadith (flexible in his narration). ‘The rest of the narrators are sound. Balhagi narrates In Shu’abul fmén (vol.3 pg-383) with his chain of narration: *Uthmén ibn Abul °Ag = narrates that Rasilullah # said, ‘When the 15” night of Sha’bSn appears, a prociaimer proclaims, Is there anyone seeking forgiveness that T may forgive him? Is there anyone asking that I may ‘grant him?’ Whoever asks (on that night) is granted (his Fequest) with the exception of an adulteress and a mush. 1 (Moulénd Makid) say, Hafiz Ibn Rajab has mentioned this Hadith in Latd-if, Girt has mentioned it In flusnut ‘Bayén and SuyAi has mentioned It In Durre Manthdr. Imm Suyat mentions in Durrul ManthOr: Ibn Abi Shaibah, Tirmidhi, Ton Maja and Baihagi narrate from Hadrat “Alshah sadiyallahu ‘anhd, "One night I did ‘ot find Rasdlullah 2, Thus, 1 emerged In search of him. found Him in Baq/%, raising his head towards the sky. He sald, Ol “Alshah, did you fear that Allah #& and His RasGl s would deal with you unjustly?’ I said, "I did not have that apprehension, however, 1 thought You had gone to one of the other wives’, Thereafter, He said, Verly, during the night of the 15° of Sha’bén, Allah 3 doscands to the lowest heaven and forgives mare (of His Creation) than the hale found on the goats of the Kalb tbe’ " aagh~ cemetery of Madinah Munawwarah, 1 (Moulénd Makid) éay, Haft tbe Rajab Hambali has. ‘mentioned it in Latd-ifand added that Imm Ahmed has falco narrated It in his Musnad. Hafiz Mundhitl mentions the following in Targib wa Tarhib: Baihagi nerrates from the HadIth of “Aisha ‘ediyaliéha ‘anh that RasOlullah # said, bral am came tome and sald, “This Is the 15° night of Sho’bén. Allah % emancipates people from the fire during this night equivalent to the hair of the goats ofthe Kelb tribe. Allah 3 does not look (with mercy) at a mushrik during this fight, neither to a person harbouring enmity, neither to 2 person who severs family tes, neither to @ person who Sllows his garments to flow below his ankles, neither to 2 person who is disobedient to his parents and neither to fan addicted alcoholic. Thereafter, he goes on to quote the entire Hadith. End of quote. 10.48fiz Bathaal narrates In Shuabul Iman (vol.3 (79-379): Yehy& Ibn Kathir rahmatullshi ‘alah says, ‘One night, RasOlullh sx emerged from his home. ‘Aishah radiyaliahu ‘anh, proceeded to Bagi’ In search of him. She saw him raising his head towards the sky. He 3t Said, *Did you fear that Allan a and His RasOl as would deal’ with You unjustly2’ I replied, ‘Ol Rasdlullah a I thought that You had gone to one of the other wives’. He said, "Verly, during the night of the 15% of Sha’ban, Ailsh af forgives more of His creation than the hair on the goats of the tribe of Kalb’. Baihagi says, ‘This Hadith has been narrated by Holi} lpn Arta-ah from Yahy8 tbn Kathir. Thus, this is a Mursaf Hadith (eee footnote 4). End of quote. Thereafter, he narrates the Mursal Hadlth with his chain of narration tinder no.10 and comments In the fellowing manner: There are many Ahsdith, which substantiate this Hadith Such ag the Hadith of “Aishah ragialléhu ‘anh, AbO Bakr Siddiq and Ab MAs8 Ash-arl a. End of quote. 414. Shalkk Muhaddith ‘AbdullAh Gim&ri mentions in ‘qusnu! Bayan: Baihagi has narrated from MakhOl who narrates. from Kathir ibn Murrat. who nerrates irom Rosdlullgh “During the night of the 15” of Sha’bln, Allah 3 forgives all the inhabitants of the earth with the exception of @ ‘mushrik and one who harbours enmity’. Balhagl says, "This Hadith Is completely mursaf’. End of quote. 12. Imam Suydt? mentions In Durre Manthir: Khatib narrates in Ruwde Malik from "Aisha radiyalishu ‘anha that she heard Rasolulih & saying, “Alldh 9 opens up all goodness during four nights, the night of (dul) ‘Agha and Fir, the night of the 15" of sha’bén (wherein the tima> of death, sustenance and the names of the iis are recorded)’ and during the night of Araf8® until the aha. 43, afiz Mundhil mentions In Targt® wat Farhi: “Aishah radiyallénu ‘anna says, “Rasdlullan m stood up during the night, performed galSt and prolonged the ‘sajdah to such an extent that 1 thought He hed passed ‘away. T stood up and shook his large toe, which moved. ‘Thus, I returned (to my bed). Alshah or (He said) Ol Humaira, aid ‘you think that Nabi sas broken His promise with you?" T'sald, "No, by the oath of allah, O! Rael uf Allah, However, a5 a result of Your lengthy sadah, 1 thought that You had been taken away’. He replied, "Do you know what night this is?" T replled, ‘Algh and’ His Sasi know best. He said, "This is the 15% night of Sha’ban. Verily, Allah 3¢ turns (with mercy) towards His servants during the 15° night of Sha’ban, forgives ell those who ‘seek His pardon, has mercy upon those who request for mercy and delays the affalr of those who harbour malice’ He (Hémz Munabirt) says, Balhagt has narrated this Hadith from the chain of “Ala trom “Alshah radiyalnu ‘anhd. He further states: This Hadith Is compi-tely Mursal i.e. °AI8 did not hear from ‘Aishah redyllbhy ‘anh. Allah & knows best. {End of quote} Imam Suydf mentions in Durruf Manthdr: Bathagi narrates, whilst regarding it as a weak narration, ‘hat “Alshah radiyallahu ‘anhd said, ‘Rasdlullah entered ‘upon me and removed His two’ garments. "Thereaftes, without any delay, he stood up and wore his clothing Intense self-honour overtook me and I thought thot He hod ‘gone to one of the other co-wives. 1, thus, emerged and {followed him. I found him in Bagi” seeking forgiveness on behalf of al the believers as well as the martyrs. I sald, May, ‘my parents be sacrificed for You; You are occupied with your Rabb whilst, I am occupied with this wore’. 1, thus, tumed away and entered my room panting for breath. Rastiullah met'me and enquired, ‘What Is this panting Ol Aishah? 1 replied, "May my parents be sacrificed for you. You came to ‘me, removed your garments, thereafter, without any delay; You stood up and wore your clothing. A great doal of self onour overtook me end I thought that you had gone to one, ‘of my other co-wives. Thereafter, I'saw you In Baqi” ‘engaged In whet you were engaged.
