The other buses are low spead networks which ars mainly event driven, ie. an electronic contral module outputs 2 ‘message only in response to a request message fram another control module or a hard wired input from a switch or sensor. A twisted pair of wires are used for the CAN bus and single wires are used forall of the other buses. Bus wires can be repaired using crimped connections. The unwound length of CAN bus wires must not exeaed 40 mm (1.6 in) ‘Two CAN busses are employed on the vehicle © Medium speed (MS) © igh speed (Hs) The medium speed bus connects the folowing control modules: Integrated Head Unit (THU) of low tne head unit © Heating and ventilation control module © Fuel fired booster heater © Parking aid control module © rpms control module eos ‘The high speed bus connects the following control modules: © Steering angle sensor © Air suspension © Electric Park Brake (PB) control module © Electronic rear differential control module © Terrain Response™ © Rom e ecw ercw © Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS) module © ABS module. oth the medium and high speed CAN bus are connected to the instrument cluster and the diagnostic socket at one end. The ‘medium speed bus terminates at the C28, while the high speed bus terminates at the ABS control module. Control modules are connected in elther a loop , CAN In CAN out, or a spur configuration. Should a control module that is looped fail, the bus system will ail at that point, Should a spurred control module fail the rest of the bus system will be unaffected by the faulty control module. Media Orientated System Transport (MOST) ‘The MOST bus uses a fibre optic cable to transport data and audio around the entertainment and Information system. The fore optic cable is arranged in a ring, with each unit on the bus having a MOST in and MOST out connection MOST is a synchronous network. A timing master supplies the clock and all other devices synchronize their operation to this clock. The timing master for the MOST network is the Integrated Head Unit (IHU), Key features of the MOST network are: © High data transfer rate © Support for up to 64 devices: © Support of asynchronous and synchronous data transfer © Reduced cabling © Simple connectors ‘hen handling the MOST fore optic cables the following safety precautions should be observed: © The cable has @ minimum bend radius of 25mm. © tis advisable not to look directly Into the connector ofa live cable. © The MOST cable cannot be repaired, replacement overlay harnesses are availabe to replace damaged cables. Video Interface (GVIF) Giga ‘The GVIF bus is a Sony proprietary bus for the transmission of video between a transmitter device and a display device. tn this, Instance i s used to transmit video fram the navigation computer to the Touch Screen Display (TAD) only. Local Interconnect Network (LIN) bus There are two LIN buses on the vehicle, One connects the rain sensor, roof opening panel and memory seats to the central junction box and the other connects the BAUS to the CIB. ‘The LIN bus has a master/ slave configuration. Within the master is stored a ‘schedule table’. This is alist of al the LIN frames or packets In order of which one gets sent when and how many times within a particular cycle, The master sends out a header on the bus which wil identify to the slaves whose turn ie is to transmit a frame, The slave then fills the space after the header with the contents of the frame. The frame identifiers are all sourced from the LIN specification, and the frame Identifiers are grouped by the ize of the frame in bytes. all the LIN nodes are optional ft, consequently there is a different schedule table for each permutation, The bus master switches between these based on the information held within the car configuration file, The CIB also acts as a bi-directional gateway between the medium speed CAN bus and the LIN bus by passing signals between the two buses, ‘The LIN bus is a single wire and operates at 9.6Kbs. The protocol used on the LIN bus is defined by the LIN consortium. Sony Philips Digital Interface Format (SPDIF) ‘The SPDIF Is an digital optical system connected between the digital versatile disc (DVD) autochanger and the audio amplifier and Is. sed to output the aul from the DVD autochanger to the audio amplifier. Diagnostic Socket The diagnostic socket allows the transfer of Information between the vehicle electronic control modules and Té on the high or medium speed CAN bus, or indirectly vin the instrument cluster. The diagnostic socket is located in the lower instrument panel closing panel, on the drivers side below the steering column, IS Bus The 1S bus is @ dedicated bus system used to transfer information between the RSE module and the two RSE screens. AiNet ‘The Ai Net is an Alpine proprietary bus used to communicate between the RSE module and the DVD autachanger. CAN Network Integrity Checks In the event that one or more control modules are not communicating on either the Madium Speed (MS) or High Speed (HS) CAN ‘Buses, checks can be perfarmed to confirm the integrity of the CAN harness. The following information is applicable to HS and MS CAN Buses accessible via the J1962 diagnostic connector. Module Connections to the CAN Herness Modules are connected to the CAN harness either in a ‘loop! or ‘spur’ configuration. tn the ‘loop’ type configuration the CAN harness loops into the module (via two connector pins) and then loops out of the module (via anather two connector pins). In the ‘spur’ type configuration, a harness spur Is spliced into the main ‘backbone’ of the CAN harness and the module Is connected to the harness spur via two connector pins. CAN Harness Architecture For a detallad description of the CAN Networks and architecture, refer to the relevant Description and Operation section in the Workshop Manual. REFER to: ‘Communications Network (418-00 Module Communications Network, Description and Operation), ‘Commuinications Network (418-00 Medule Communications Network, Diagnosis and Testing), Communications Network (418-00, Diagnosis and Testing) IDS Vehicle Integrity Test If 3 control module is suspected of non-communication, the Network Integrity test application available on the manufacturer ‘approved dlagnastic system can be used to confirm f communication is possible between the contral modules on the vehicle and the manufacturer approved diagnostic system (via the 11962 diagnostic connector ). The results from the tast can be used to determine if either a single module or multiple modules are failing to communicate. CAN Terminating Modules If the Network Integrity test indicates that one or more module on one of the CAN networks (HS or MS) are falling to communicate, there are several checks that can be made. The first step Isto Identify I both of the CAN terminating modules on teach individual CAN Bus are communicating. If both CAN terminating modules for each individual CAN Bus are communicating ((dentified via the Network Integrity test), then It can be confirmed that the main ‘backbone! of the CAN harness is complete. The ‘main ‘backbone’ of the CAN harness consists of all the modules connected to the CAN harness via @ loop’ configuration and also Includes the two terminating medules. ‘Communication with bath CAN terminating modules via the Network Integrity test confirms the physical integrity of the main "ackbone’ of the CAN harness (and the harness spur to the 1962 diagnostic connector). This means that there is ne requirement to check the resistance af the CAN Netwark. This Is because the standard check for 60 chms across the CAN High and CAN Low lines will not provide any additional information regarding the physical condition of the CAN hamess, beyond what has already been determined from the Network Integrity test. Non-Communication of a Terminating Module If Network Integrity test reveals a terminating module Is falling to communicate It can indicate @ break In the main ‘backbone’ of the CAN harness. The first checks should always be to confirm the power and ground supplies to the non-communicating module are correct. Providing these are corract, the resistance between the CAN High and CAN Low lines at the 11962 connector can be checked to determine the Integrity of the main ‘backbone’ of the CAN harness, After disconnecting the battery a reading of 120 ‘ohms would indicate an open circult in the main ‘backbone’ of the CAN harness, Alternatively, 2 reading of 60 ohms would in that there Is no open circuit fault with the main ‘backbone’ of the CAN harness. te Its worth noting that even if one of the terminating modules is disconnected from the CAN harness, communications between the ‘modules still connected may stil be possible. Therefore communication between the manufacturer approved dlagnostic system land the connacted modules may also be possible. Locating CAN Harness Open Circults, In the case where multiple modules, including 2 terminating module, are falling to communicate, having frst confirmed the power ‘and ground supplies are correct, the approximate location of the open cireult can be Identified from analysis of the Network Integrity test results and reference to the relevant CAN network circuit diagrams. For exemple, fan open circuit existed in @ certain position on the CAN harness, any module positioned on the Network between the 31962 connector and the open circuit Should return a response during the Natwork Integrity test. No responses would be returned from any modules past the open cireult fault in the Network. CAN Hames ‘Spur’ Type Configuration Circuits If, after the initial checks (Network Integrity test using the manufacturer approved lagnastic system, and power and ground supplies to the module have been checked and confirmed as correct), a module that is connected to the CAN harness via a 'spur* type configuration is suspected of not communicating, then the physical integrity of the CAN harness ‘spur’ can be checked. This is most easily undertaken by individually checking the continuity of the CAN High and CAN Low lines between the ‘non-communicating madule connector (with the module disconnected) and the 31962 diagnostic connector. "Lost Communications’ DTCs [As wall as the methods described so far in this document, which can be used to determine the location of an open circuit in the CAN harness, 'Lost Communications’ DTCs can also be used for this purpose. Lost communication DTCs mean that 2 module Is not recelving CAN Information fram another module. For example, if global DTC read were to be carried out, only DTCs stored in the modules that the manufacturer approved dlagnostic system could communicate with would be displayed. If there was an open circutt fault In a certain position on the CAN harness, the modules that could display DTCs would all be prior to the open circult on the Network, and these modules should display ‘Lost Communications’ OTCS with all the modules located on the Network past the open circu faut. "Bus off DTCs ‘The references to bus and its condition refer to the ntwark concerned and the modules on that network. | 3 module logs a ‘Bus OfF DTC, It means that the module has detected CAN transmission errors and has disabled its’s own CAN transmissions and disconnected itself from the network in an attempt to allow the rest of the network to function. At this point the "Bus OFF DTC is set. A common cause of 'Bus OFF DTCs can be a short circult in the CAN network Media oriented systems transport (MOST) diagnosis overview The basic guidelines are covered In the description and operation section, such as not attempting to repair fibre optic cables, but ‘additional precautions Include: © 0 not touch the exposed ends of the optical fibres (grease from skin can contaminate the fibre) Whenever the fibre optic cable is disconnected, cover the connectors to prevent dust contamination Do not expose the fibre optic cable to hent Do not bend the fibre optic cable through less than a 25 mm (one inch) radius Do not use laser pens ta test the fibre optic cable's ability to pass light ~ There is a dedicated tester to use with the MOST network modules and fibre optic harness to assist with diagnosis ‘and to test the fibre optic cable's ability to pass light MosT tester Before connecting the tester to the network, turn on the unit end check that the red pewer en incicator Illuminated 1 not, the battery should be replaced before using the tester 240 Self-test 41. Published: 12-May-2011 Wiring Harnesses - Wii Description and Operation Introduction Ad caution: 00 not use anyother heat shrink sleeve other than the approved gle ined heat shrink sleeve mentioned inthe oor proved. ‘The purpase of this document isto promote quick and efficient minor repair to harness connectors or cables using approved ‘methods and the wiring harness repair kit. Repairs may only be made to cables and connectors which have been mechanically, not electrically damages. It also applies where the whole extent of the damage can be clearly Mentified and rectified Care and neatness are essential requirements in making a perfect repair. Caution: [At the time of this first issue of the Harness Repair Guide, do not approve repairs to any of the following circuits: © Any media orientated system transport network harnesses. © ‘Supplement restraint system (SRS) firing circuts (Air bags). © Link lead assembles, which are unique to safety critical circuits such as anti-lock brake system (ABS) and thermocouple circults. An example of this Is the ABS wheel speed sensors with moulded connectors, © 4, Screened cables, leads and wiring harness(s). If any harness(s) with defective electrical connector terminals or wires from the above circuits are a concern, new ‘components must be installed. Repair Kit Ad courion: were the repair procedure indicates theta glue lined nest shrink sleeve shouldbe appled, apply sufcent heat {Stiegl lined heatsink to mat the gle In order to provide a watertight ea. Do not over host the ald nd et shin sleeve so thatthe wring hemeasinauston becomes damaged The wiring harness repair kit has been produced which comprises: © Pre-terminated wiring harness(s) of different sizes and types © Three sizes of butt splice connectors © A selection of colored cable Identification sleeves © Two sizes of alue lined heat shrink sleeves © crimping pliers © A wire cutter and insulation stripper © ‘An electrical connector terminal extraction handle and tips A suitable heat source, for shrinking heat shrink sleeves will be required. ‘The pre-insulated diamond grip range of electrical connector terminals and In-line, butt splice connectors contained within the wiring harness repair kit are the only acceptable product for the repairs of wiring harnesses. The butt connectors not only grip the wire but also the insulation, making a very secure joint If an elactrcal connector terminalis not included in the wiring harness repair kit then approval for the repair is NOT given and in these circumstances a new wiring harness must be installed. Pre-Terminated Wiring Harness(s) and Butt Splice Connectors All pre-terminated wiring harness(s) and butt splice connectors in the wiring harness repair kit are contained In bags which can be resealed after use. Each bag is marked with the part number of the items stored within the bag. Each storage compartment in the wiring harness repair kit is identified with the corresponding part number. Make sure that pre-terminated wiring harness(s) and Cconnactors are not mixed up it is advisable to only open one bag ato time and to reseal the bag sscurely before opening another bbag. Also, replace the bag in its mating part number compartment within the case, ‘The pre-terminated wiring haress(s) are supplied with the insulation in one of three colors, red, blue or yellow. The colors do nat apply to any particular cireult but to the harness wire size. See the Relationship Table In the Repair Method section. Butt splice connectors are also supplied with red, blue or yellow coverings, which must be matched to the pre-terminated wiring harness insulation color.
