Shakespeare In Love

As you view this video, identify:

1. the reason Shakespeare's era is referred to as the Elizabethan time.
The Elizabethan Era took place from 1558 to 1603 and is considered
by many historians to be the golden age in English History. During this era
England experienced peace and prosperity while the arts flourished. The time
period is named after Queen Elizabeth I who ruled England during this
time. Her long reign created stability. When she died, James VI of Scotland,
the son of her cousin Mary Queen of Scots, inherited the throne peacefully.
By the end of her reign, the Church of England was safe, and there was no
chance of a War of Religion.

2. the role and place of women during Shakespeare's time.

The role of women during Shakespeare's time, the Elizabeth Era, was
to serve as wives and mothers. Women had little autonomy, and though some
women were educated, they were not allowed to work in most professions. A
woman's primary societal duties were to marry as her family directed her and
to raise children for her husband.

3. the reason the play 'Romeo and Juliet' placed and defined Shakespeare as
"set apart from the the other writers of his time."
The play ascribes different poetic forms to different characters, sometimes
changing the form as the character develops. The most likely reason is
probably that Shakespeare, better than any writer before or since, understood
exactly what makes people tick. And he was able to transform the
understanding into the most powerful portrayals of human relationships ever
written.

4. whether this movie is a true biographical reflection of Shakespeare of not.
