Astrological Study of INFERTILITY : AN ANALYTICAL ASTROLOGICAL
STUDY OF INFERTILITY FROM THE INDICATIONS IN A HOROSCOPE,
SUBJECT TO THE CANONS OF CLASSICS OF VEDANGA JYOTISHA AND
SUGGESTING ASTROLOGICAL REMEDIAL MEASURES IF POSSIBLE WITHIN
ITS FRAME WORK.

INTRODUCTION

Children, even if they are not your own, is a great source of joy. We take immense
delight in listening to their prattle or watching them at play. Family happiness is
truncated without children. Childlessness is considered a great misfortune for a married
couple. Progeny qualifies the marital bondage as capable, fruitful and qualitative. Most
people get children as a matter of chance. Some poor people even find children a great
burden and get them even they are not really wanted. Some couples resort to various
methods to prevent unwanted pregnancies. However childless couples yearn for progeny
and they think that life is not worth living without an offspring. Married couples feel the
childlessness as calamity in their life. One of the greatest blessings in life is to have a
child who cares. In fact, according to THIRUKKURAL, a famous Tamil doggerel
compiled by sage Thiruvalluvar, the best thing a son can do for his parents is to…
“make others say what penance his parents should have done to beget such a good Son”.

Procreation of living beings is a part of revolution of the universe. From the social point
of view, continuation of family lineage is indispensable. A groom while marrying
resolves to accept his wife for furtherance of Dharma and for begetting progeny
according to sanatana dharma. The Sacred institution of marriage is meant to facilitate
Grihya and Srauta Dharmas. One of such dharma is to propagate the species. Hindus call
progeny as ‘tanaya’ in Sanskrit, which has its root in ‘tana’ which means to stretch (or pull)

them from hell. One should have children because Apau~asya gaitanaaista (meaning: one who
accounts childlessness has no future here and hereafter). The meaning of word pau~a (son) is
explained in scared scriptures as pauM naama narkxata\ ~aayatao [ita pau~a : (meaning: One who saves the
parents from a hell is called pau~a in smrutis

Natal charts exhibiting the deployment of Grahas is a very latent and potent instrument
for the diagnosis of childlessness as well as for searching and locating the reasons for it
and taking preventive/corrective steps on them. The investigation of birth charts can be
employed for the benefit of mankind through the canons of Vedic Astrology for an
accurate diagnosis. When a Doctor desires to investigate the exact cause of a disease, he
resorts to microscope to spurn any susceptible doubt. Astrologers make use of divisional
charts and specific sensitive points arrived by manipulating longitudes of grahas to reach
the intrinsic level of investigation of sterility & virility in charts.

INFERTILITY which prevents from begetting a child is a barrier in the process of

prolonging the chain of family which is the imperative purpose of the institution of
marriage. Even though the INFERTILITY cannot be included in the list of diseases
(caused by external elements), but is a precarious disorder of hormone or reproductive
system, which can be definitely analyzed astrologically for the benefit of the mankind.
Childlessness can result either from a physical or a biological defect or an aberration
which requires medical advice and remedy or a number of other causes which a proficient
astrologer can divulge. The reasons for childlessness can be found out certainly from the
horoscope.

Most of all classic texts on Vedanga Jyotisha are unanimous that 5th house in a horoscope
and Jupiter as Santana Karaka is responsible for and manages the filial happiness.

Vaidyanatha Dikshit in Jataka Parijata declares:

Meaning: Acquisition of children is to be determined in connection with Jupiter and the

5th Bhava.

Vaidyanatha Dikshit while dealing with s~aI jaatakx in Jataka Parijata quotes that:
. . . tannavamata:pau~aayavaRiWMvadota\ ||2

Meaning…. Children and wealth abundance should be declared through 9th Bhava there
from (from lagna)

Venkatesh Sharma in his monumental Sarvartha Chintamani quotes that:

Meaning…. Children should be gleaned by 5th, 7th & 9th lords and Jupiter.
The joy of having one’s own progeny is coveted by all, but not all are blessed with this
gift which has its roots in the paUva- pauNyama\ (the merits earned in previous birth): (pauratanama\
pauNyama\ || pa`Sna maaga- 14:7 || & bauiWM pau~aM paUva-pauNyaM tvamaatyaM pau~aata\ || pa`SnaanauYTana paWita 11:3||) Fifth
house, apart from filial happiness also stands for paUva- pauNya , which indicates that if you
wish to have good sons/daughters and to derive happiness out of them, naturally your paUva-
pauNya also must be good. The fruits of our kxma- and paUva- pauNya are decided before our birth!
That means we have no control over childlessness or the quality of children we are going
to have at all! Whatever we get, we will have to accept.

As per the dogma of Vedanga Jyotisha Childlessness can be result of past Karmas.
Classical texts on Vedanga Jyotisha exhaustively dealt with curses resulting in infertility
and its remedial measures. There are several references in Bruhat Parashara Hora
Shastra, Phaladeepika, Prashna Marga, and Prashnanushtana Padhati about causes
and remedies on this aspect. Santana Deepika also particularly dealt in detail the causes
of curses which results in childlessness. This research student has added chapters on
curses and remedies as per Vedanga Jyotisha along with this thesis.

To scrutinize primary filial happiness from a chart, one should inspect:

1) 5th house, its lord and occupants from Lagna

2) 5th house, its lord and occupants from the Moon
3) Position of Jupiter- significator of issues
4) 5th house and its occupants from Jupiter
5) 9th house from Lagna, its lord and occupants for females charts.

Apart from the above conventional methods using houses, this researcher used some
technically manipulated sensitive points, apart from Saptamansha (D/7) chart as
described in classical Vedic Astrology texts to establish infertility. They are:

This researcher has tried to apply and find out reasons of infertility from 224 birth charts
(97 males, 127 females in which 77{154 individuals} are infertile couples), step by step
as stated below and observation and results are tabulated.

Apart from this, the researcher has culled out reasons for infertility and formulated 26
rules for childlessness from classical texts on Vedanga Jyotisha and sieved the collected
charts through it. Also collected indications of curses of childlessness and remedial
measures for it from various classical texts and are reproduced as a separate chapter as a
part of this thesis. The Methodology, which this researcher has adopted, is explained

above. To make it clearer, sample horoscope of infertile couple from the collection is
analyzed as below:

Lagna Chart Navamsha Chart

1.1) Primary Consideration- Jupiter, 5th house from Lagna, the Moon & Jupiter:

Fifth house & Lord from Lagna: Fifth house is Aquarius occupied by Ketu. Fifth lord
is placed in 12th house in an Alpasutha Rasi. In Navamsha, Saturn is with Ketu in
Capricorn. Fifth house from the Moon is Leo, an Agni Tatwa Rasi and is occupied by
Jupiter and Rahu. The Sun is placed in its debilitated house in Libra. In Navamsha the
Sun is with Gulika and Mars. Santana Karaka Jupiter is an Agni Tatwa Rasi with Rahu
and hemmed between malefics. In Navamsha also Jupiter is with Rahu. Fifth from
Jupiter is unoccupied, but aspected by Jupiter.

Any relation of fifth house to an Agni Tatwa Rasi is not so very conducive for
reproductive process. Here fifth house from the Moon is an Agni Tatwa Rasi and the lord
is in its debilitated house. Ketu occupies fifth house from Lagna. Aspect to Ketu from
benign Jupiter is there, but Jupiter himself is polluted with Rahu. Mars as second and
seventh house (first rated Maraka) lord is aspecting fifth house without any redeeming
effects. Fifth house from Jupiter is unoccupied and unaspected which kindles some hopes
on filial matters. As a female chart, 9th house occupation of Gulika and Maandi is a

liability on filial matters. 12th house, ie 8th from 5th is occupied by Saturn, which is the
indicator of delay. As such in Primary scrutiny itself the chart is in doubt in terms of
infertility.

Lagna Chart Navamsha Chart

Fifth house is Capricorn and its lord Saturn is placed with another eunuch Mercury (not
combust) and the Sun (12th house lord) in 10th house, Gemini. In Navamsha Saturn is
with Rahu and Maandi spoiling the chances of progeny primarily. Fifth house from the
Moon is an Agni Tatwa Rasi and the lord the Sun is placed in Gemini with Saturn and
Mercury. In Navamsha the Sun is Vargottama in Gemini Rasi. Santana Karaka Jupiter
is retrograde and is in Aquarius in Rasi and in Taurus in Navamsha. Fifth from Jupiter
is occupied by Saturn, Mercury and the Sun. From one side, influence of Agni Tatwa is
seen here from the Moon, on the other side, association of two eunuchs Grahas Mercury
and Saturn with the fifth lord from the Moon and fifth from Lagna completely puts this
chart under question on issues related to fifth house. Retrograde Santana Karaka Jupiter
is in 6th house in Aquarius Rasi. Fifth from Jupiter is again polluted with eunuch grahas
Saturn & Mercury. Moreover, when the above combination of eunuch Grahas with the
Sun is in fifth house from Jupiter completes the picture. Such a combination does not
give a rosy picture on filial matters. Perusing the chart on fertility purpose on the primary
consideration put in doubt.

1.3) Study of Saptamansha (D/7) Divisional Charts for children

Maharishi Parashara has advised us to look for Saptamansha for children and grand
children vide:

Saptamansha is the division of seventh house showing the focus on the activities and
results of sexual interaction, namely children.

As the name implies one Rasi is divided into 7 (each part 40 17’ 09”) equal parts.

Meaning: the Seven names for Odd signs are Ksahara (Bitter) Kshira (Milk) Dadhi(

Sudhajala (Pure water) are the deities of these parts. For even Rasis the order is
reversed.

As per Bruhat Parashara Hora Shastra 3:49, Mercury and Saturn are eunuchs (@laIbaaO WaO saaOmya
saaOrI ) and hence these grahas inimical to childbirth. And they may cause infertility. If
Venus is also associates with this combination, in D/7 Chart, in lagna, or trines to the
same, then the person has had excessive sexual encounters and diminishes the chances of
Progeny.

D/7 chart has the final say on filial matters. If Saturn, Venus and Mercury are in trines
alone, then the native is barren irrespective of all Yogas in the birth chart. In male chart
the 5th house is the controlling house for children, whilst in female chart it is the 9th.
Maraka (2nd & 7th) of these houses are 6th & 11th for males and 10th & 3rd for females and
can kill the children. For child birth, the lord of D/7 chart holds the key. If the lord is in
6th/11th for males and 10th/3rd for females, may be adverse to child birth. If the lord of
lagna of D/7 chart is placed in 8th house, or D/7 Lagna lord is in association of 8th house
lord of D/7, indicating delay or deny child birth. In general, 5th lord of lagna chart,
lagnesh of D/7 Chart and 5th/9th lord of D/7 chart should have at least congenial relations
to have filial happiness.

Moon is the significator of motherhood, and its weakness in D/7 Chart indicates the
inability of mother to carry the children. This should be appeased by worshipping the
Moon and consuming the respective rasa occupied by the Moon. Saptamansha Chart of

In Saptamansha chart, Saptamansha Lagna Lord Saturn occupies in 3rd house. Being this
a chart of a female, stress was on the Moon in D/7 Chart. The Moon is with Rahu and
Trines are occupied by the Sun and Venus.

1.4) Computation of AS3 and AS9:

Maharishi Jaimini advise us to determine Aruda Padas of third and ninth house from the
Lagna and the Sun. The Aruda Padas of third and ninth from the Sun (AS3 & AS9)
constitute the ability to sustain an atma (soul) in the form of sperm, ie, the sperm should
have life in them. 3rd house ruling copulation is vital in determining the person’s ability to
conceive, and if the Sun is placed in the 2/12/6/8 from AS3, it indicates a physical
obstruction in conceiving a child. This applies to both Males & Females.

The Aruda Padas of third and ninth from Lagna (A3&A9) constitute the physical ability
to procreate. If the sun is in the 2nd, 6th 8th and 12th houses from any of these Padas, the
same is damaged resulting in infertility. Similarly if Venus and Mercury conjoin these
Padas they produce infertility. If either of the two Padas is not damaged, child birth is
delayed and not denied. If the Padas from Lagna are afflicted a above medical attention is
required and the astrologer should not attempt remedial measures unnecessarily.

The principle involved is that the gestation period from conception to birth for human
beings is nine months. Hence the ninth house from the Sun sign and its seventh, ie third
house are the root signs. Aruda Padas of these signs is determined. The eighth houses
from these two Aruda Padas will determine the fertility of the Chart. Aruda of 3rd from
the Sun (AS3) and 9th from the Sun (AS9) were arrived as follows:

The third house from the Sun (of Chart no: 1) is Sagittarius. Its lord Jupiter is in 9th from
it. Counting 9 signs from there we reach to Aries. We mark this as AS3. In the same way
9th house from the Sun is Gemini and its lord is in 6th from it. Counting 6 signs from
Gemini, we mark AS9 in Mesh Rasi.

Summing up, the ASTROLOGICAL STUDY OF INFERTILITY from the indications of a
Horoscope is arranged by going step by step evaluating each point as described in the
canons of Vedanga Jyotisha, on finding out causes of infertility.
