1.     The first sentence - this extract is from act …. Scene …. Of Macbeth. Don’t be
creative over here. The act and scene will not be given to you.
2.     Build in a mini-introduction, where you would, depending on the extract, address
the tragedy conventions. Tailor it to suit the extract.
3.     Convey what happened before and after this extract.
4.     The function or significance of this extract.
5.     Thesis statement and overview - that captures what is it that you’re going to focus
on during the commentary. The examiner will have a sense of what to expect from this
lines.
6.     Roadmap

Body –
      There cannot be a point where you are trying to explain or paraphrase the extract.
      The examiner needs your interpretation. They are interested in your close reading
skills. How the literary elements and dramatic devices are being used and how you
interpret the use of these devices?
      In a non-liner analysis, do not go to extremes, don’t talk about line 16 then line 1 and
then line 40.
      When you interpret, always refer to the line. (line 10, line 20, etc.)
      Say something and the provide evidence. Always provide evidence.
      Every choice, justify it taking into the account of the impact on the audience.

Conclusion:
      Reinforce the main thing and implication on the audience.
      Add a little bit of your own, very personal take on it. What is that you are going to
take away. End it with some thought, something that will stay on. Your individual thing
should be there.
