Here are the instructions for your first written assignment.

The approximate word limit is 350-500

words. Email your assignment directly to me, and cc Ms Afia as well. The submission deadline is
Sunday, 7th February.  The assignment should be a typed Word document or PDF, or a PDF of a
scanned handwritten page; also attach a jpg image of your selected art work in the email, or embed
it within your document. Please proofread your assignment and use spell check; I don't want to see
any silly, avoidable errors. 
Select an art work from any period of art history (it can be a painting, sculpture, installation etc.) and
write an analytical response piece on it. Make sure you identify the artist, the time period in which it
was created, and the medium used (e.g. oil paints, charcoal, graphite, marble etc). Other than this
basic information, DO NOT plagiarise material from the internet – I want to know YOUR thoughts,
not someone else’s. Following are some suggestions for what you may want to consider when
articulating your response piece: 

 Why did you select this particular art work? What attracted you to it? 
 How/what does the art work make you feel/think? What do you think that
feeling/thought is in response to?
 Comment on the technique/style. What kind of colour palette can you identify? Is
the style realist, abstract, impressionistic etc.?  
 Does the style or imagery remind you of any other visual material you might have
seen before, or something else from your life experience?
 Does the art work tell you a story? 
 Does it appeal to you in a purely visual sense (i.e. is it just ‘well painted’?)or does it
have emotional/intellectual appeal as well?
