Notice that the linear alkyl groups methyl and ethyl have similar
values (yellow), but that branching at the first carbon makes a big
difference as in isopropyl and tert -butyl groups.
Also notice that the halogens and groups where oxygen is attached
directly to the ring are similar (blue) and are easier to place in an
axial position than alkyl groups.
Phenyl is similar to isopropyl but slightly larger.
