Various Concepts on leadership [slide3]

 One with "blue blood" or genes (aristocrats) [slide4]
 One with talent (meritocracy) [slide5]
 Patriarchs (in some society men) [slide6]
 Matriarchs (in some society women) [slide7]
 Mix of intelligence, trustworthiness, humanness, courage and discipline (Sun Tzu) [slide8]
o Too much intelligence will lead to rebelliousness
o Too much humanness will lead to weakness
o Too much courage will lead to violence
o Too much discipline will lead to cruelty
 Stewardship towards fulfilling God’s Plan (Christianity) [slide9]

Simple Definition [slide10]

 A process of social influence in which a person can enlist the aid and support of others in the
accomplishment of a common task [slide11]

Ingredients for Leadership (according to the world) [slide12]

 Assertiveness - being able to stand up for your own or other people's rights in a calm and positive way, without
being either aggressive or passive [slide13]
 Authenticity - it's someone who will stay true to who they are and what they are feeling at that moment
[slide14]
 Big Five personality factors - extroverted, conscientious, emotionally stable, open to experience, agreeableness
[slide15]
 Birth order – first born usually driven to seek leadership, mid born follower roles, later born rebellious [slide16]
 Dominance - work fast, live fast and make decisions quickly and objectively. [slide17]
 Emotional intelligence - capability of individuals to recognize their own emotions and those of others, discern
between different feelings and label them appropriately [slide18]
 Intelligence - mental quality that consists of the abilities to learn from experience, adapt to new situations,
understand and handle abstract concepts [slide19]
 Narcissism - egotistic admiration of one's own attributes [slide20]
 Social motivation - human need to interact with other humans and to be accepted by them [slide21]

Leadership Styles - style of providing direction, implementing plans, and motivating people [slide22]

 Autocratic or authoritarian – decision making centralized in a leader, a dictator [slide23]

 Participative or democratic – shared decision making with the group, members’ interests promoted [slide24]
 Laissez-faire or Free-rein – decision making passed on to subordinates [slide25]

I don’t have the Ingredients. Is there hope for me? [slide26]

 The Story of Gideon – Judges 6:11-12 Now the angel of the Lord came and sat under the terebinth at Ophrah,
which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, while his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress to hide it
from the Midianites. And the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, “The Lord is with you, O mighty
man of valor.” [slide27]
 The Calling of David - 1 Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height,
for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward
appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." [slide28]

A New Kind of Leadership [slide29]

 John 13:12-15 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to
them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I
am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I
have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. [slide30]
 Mark 10:45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for
many. [slide31]
 “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors.
But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who
serves.” (Luke 22:25–26) [slide32]

Servant Leadership [slide33]

 Traditional leadership generally involves the exercise of power by one at the “top of the pyramid.” By
comparison, the servant-leader shares power, puts the needs of others first and helps people develop and
perform as highly as possible. Servant leadership turns the power pyramid upside down; instead of the people
working to serve the leader, the leader exists to serve the people. [slide34]

How do I serve others while leading? [slide35]

 Listen - Value their contributions / James 1:19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should
be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry [slide36]
 Don’t gossip- Cultivate trust / Ephesians 4:29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but
only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
[slide37]
 Help others grow - Show an example/ 1 Timothy 4:12 Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are
young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. [slide38]
 Build Deep Connections - Go the second mile /Mt 5:41 And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him
two [slide39]
 Encourage – lead the way / Is 41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I
will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. [slide40]
 Don’t command. Persuade – / 2 Cor 5:11 Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade
others. [slide41]
 Be selfless – think of others / Phil 2:4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests
of others. [slide42]
 Invest for the future – Gal 6:9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do
not give up. [slide43]
 Be humble – seek the glory of God / Is 42:8 "I am the LORD; that is my name! I will not yield my glory to another
or my praise to idols. [slide44]

Conclusion: Empowered to Serve – Equipped to Lead [slide45]

 Serve with Zest! - Colossians 3:23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men [slide46]
 Equipped to Serve - 1 Corinthians 12: 4-7 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are
varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who
empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
