Wed:

Pitch-class vs. Pitch

Pitch-class Integer: using numbers C = 0 through B = e (eleven)

Ordered Pitch Interval (indicating ACTUAL distance in semitones and direction + or

-)
Ordered Pitch-Class Interval: fits within an octave. Still mapping distance, but
only positive numbers moving clockwise, EVEN IF IT'S SHORTER THE OTHER DIRECTION!)

Unordered Pitch Interval = NO indication on direction. Useful for harmonic

intervals

USE EXAMPLE HERE TO PRACTICE PC Integer, then ordered pitch interval (using + and
-) then Ordered pc Interval (clockwise around)

Pcset = group of given pitches vs psets (pitch sets). Trichord, tetrachords,

pentachord, hexachord

Normal order = smallest/most compact grouping, written out ascending order

(clockwise)
Use curly braces { }

TRY OUT A BUNCH ON CLOCK FACES, DO ROTATIONS ON A STAFF

Friday:

Review Normal Order

Transposition, Inversion
Math in Mod-12

Week 6
Monday: Video lecture
- Prime form and the concept of the set class # (Forte number)
- segmentation
- small sample analysis using Bartok

Wed: review basics of prime form (in-class points?)

~ Bartok analysis together (diminished fifths)

Segmentation: choosing groups of pitches, grouping together in a logical/meaningful

way
- octatonic collection
- subset of oct.
- sub and super sets
- determining form from changing set-class
- what does this tell us?
