This report will consider the advantages and disadvantages of the removal of
homework and the impact it will have on both the mental health of students and
their results. This report will then conclude that homework should be removed
from schools as the advantages significantly outweigh the disadvantages.

I will now cite my sources. Survey and tests from a private school, a grammar
school, and from a top, middle and lower end state school. School counselors, as
well as studies done by the Government of Finland that has banned homework.

Teacher, Parent, and Student Surveys:

Over 60% of students in all the schools reported feeling very stressed by the
amount of homework they are given. 32% believe that they would perform
better with less work. 15% of teachers believe in homework, whereas 34% only
give homework because they have to. 24% of teachers are convinced that
students would perform better with out homework. 76% of parents believe that
their children are too stressed and have too much work.

After discovering students were stressed I interviewed school councilors. The

overwhelming consensus was that students’ mental health would improve and
so would sleep by giving them less homework. From this we can conclude that
homework has negative implications and can cause stress and lack of sleep.

Tests:
I conducted the same test in every school for year nine English classes. I divided
each set into 4 groups. Group 1 did no homework or revision, Group 2 did only
revision, Group 3 did only homework, and Group 4 did both homework and
revision. After two-week s of this regime each class had a test for their ability.

The results were that in 87.5% of cases Group 2 superseded all the other
groups. Group 1 achieved the worst overall, followed by Group 3 then Group 4.
These studies done on children from a range of socio-economic backgrounds,
intellect and schools results all came back with similar results, thus proving how
homework is not always necessary. Students with just revision reported feeling
more well rested, less stressed and more prepared for their tests.

Finland
Finland has banned homework, with amazing results. I think the studies
available on the Finish Department of Educations Website. Finland has the best
mental health of students overall. Moreover, Finland has one of the highest
graduation rates.
