REDSTONE ARSENAL AND HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA

SUPPLEMENT TO SUMMER HIRE ANNOUNCEMENT

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO APPLYING

FOR STUDENT TEMPORARY EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM (STEP)
Opens 22 February 2011 and will close 08 March 2011

1. This is a Supplement to our Summer Hire Announcements which are posted at

www.armycivilanservice.com and www.usajobs.com. This supplement contains step-by-
step instructions to be used for consideration for Summer Hire positions located at
Redstone Arsenal and other Army positions in the Huntsville, Alabama area. The
summer period runs from 16 May 2011 to 30 Sep 2011. Students must be available full-
time for at least 2 months during this period of time. These positions are restricted to
students who are currently enrolled in high school, college, or have been accepted for
enrollment in college.

2. We will consider students in good standing for positions at Redstone Arsenal who are
able to follow these step-by-step instructions and submit a complete resume and self-
nomination by the closing date, 8 Mar 2011.

3. We recommend that you print a copy of this Guide and then check off each item as it
is completed. Pay particular attention to highlighted items.

4. We expect numerous applications for these positions; therefore, it is very important

that you have a complete and thorough application. Since many well-qualified
applicants will likely not be selected for positions this year, we recommend you also
apply for employment opportunities with other employers.

5. We understand many of you are new to applying for Federal positions; therefore, we
have broken down the application process into many small steps to help you through the
process. It appears long and complicated, but if you have all the information readily
available, you should be able to complete this process in 1-2 hours. It will take less time
if you have an electronic copy of a prior resume from which you can cut and paste.

STEP 1 – DETERMINE IF YOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY:

1A - You must be a United States citizen. You must have a birth certificate with
raised seal or one of the other items as listed on the Employment Eligibility Verification
Form I-9 located at www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-9.pdf.

1B - You must be currently enrolled in a high school, college, or have been accepted
for enrollment in college.

1C - You must be 16 years of age by the hiring start date.

1
1D - You must be able to obtain a letter from your school showing that you are a
current student in good standing.

1E - If you are a high school student or in your first semester of college, you must
have a transcript or grade report of all completed classes. Do not worry about classes in
which you are currently enrolled.

1F - If you are in your second semester of college, you must have a transcript of all
completed college courses. Do not worry about classes in which you are currently
enrolled.

1G - Make sure you have your social security card or other documentation that
contains your social security number.

1H - If you are selected for a position, you will be required to provide all of the above
documentation prior to being hired.

1J - The appointment of each civilian employee in the Army is subject to a personnel

security investigation for those who occupy sensitive positions, have access to classified
information, or for determining suitability for federal employment.

STEP 2 – IF YOU HAVE PREVIOUSLY SUBMITTED A RESUME TO THE

ARMY RESUME BUILDER

2A - If you have previously submitted an Army resume, please go to

www.armycivilianservice.com to view your resume. Click on “How to Apply”, click on
“Resume Builder”, and click on “Login”. Enter your social security number and
password. If you have forgotten your password, click on “Forgot your password” and
you will be directed on how to obtain a new password. Either complete or review the
Registration Information and click “Next”, then Click on “ANSWER” to view your
resume. If it is accurate, you can skip to Step 5 and self-nominate for the announcements
you wish to be considered.

2B - If you have previously submitted an Army resume and your resume needs to be
revised, you will need to click “Back”, click “Close ANSWER” and then click
“Create/Edit Resume”. If it has been more than one year since you have updated your
resume and self-nominated for a job, you will not see your resume information in the
Resume Builder. You will need to follow the steps starting at 3F below and complete a
new resume. However, you can cut and paste your experience, education, training, etc.
from your ANSWER resume or other electronic resume.

STEP 3 – COMPLETE AN ON-LINE RESUME

3A - If you have already completed any type of electronic resume, have it available
when completing your resume in Resume Builder. You can cut and paste from your
electronic resume into the Resume Builder application.

2
3B - Access the web and go to www.armycivilianservice.com. This is the Army
Civilian Service website.

3C - Click on “How to Apply”.

3D - Click on “Resume Builder”.

3E - Click on “Register” to become a user. Create a new “User Name”, “Password”,

and hints. Double and triple check your social security number (SSN). If you enter the
wrong SSN, you will not be able to access your resume again or apply for positions.

3F - Complete the “Registration Information” and click “Next”.

3G - Complete the experience section first. If you have a prior Army Resume Builder
resume, you can cut and paste the information from this resume. If not, click on the
worksheet to ensure your experience is properly formatted. You can still cut and paste
your experience description from an electronic resume. List any work experience that
you have, to include volunteer work. If you do not have work experience, put “No Work
Experience”.

3H - Scroll down to the Education Section and complete all applicable blocks. Use
the worksheet to ensure your information is properly formatted. List education you will
have completed by the end of the current term or semester. List your high school grade
point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale for all completed high school classes. Also list your
cumulative GPA for all completed college courses. If you are working on a second or
third degree, list GPA for each of the degree programs. Don’t worry about high school or
college classes in which you are currently enrolled.

3I - Scroll down to the “Additional Information” Section. List any training courses
you have completed. In order to be considered, the following information must be
added to this Additional Information section of the Resume:

(1) If you have military service, list all dates of service (from - to), percent of any
compensable disability, and any campaign badges received. You must provide
DD214s, and if applicable, SF-15, and a VA Letter to verify eligibility at the time of
selection.

(2) If you are going to apply for an Engineering Aide position, list all math, science,
and engineering courses. College students should include the number of semester or
quarter hours and the grades for each class attended.

(3) If you have experience using computer programs, list the names of the programs
you can use, to include word processing, email, spreadsheet, chart making, and database
programs.

3
(4) List alternate email addresses and alternate phone numbers where you can be
contacted that are not included in your registration information.

3J - Click “Preview My Resume” and carefully review your resume. Have a parent or
friend read and check it carefully for spelling and grammar. If there are errors, click
“Edit my Resume” and correct them. Once corrections are completed, click on “Save
Resume Draft”.

3K - Complete the supplemental information. On “Employment Categories”, click on

“Summer Employment”, click “Save Supplemental Data”.

3L - Click on “Submit” to send your resume to the Resumix system. You now have a
resume on file within the Army database.

STEP 4 – CHECK YOUR RESUME IN ANSWER

4A - Go back to the Army Civilian Service website.

4B - Wait about 10-15 minutes and click on “How to Apply”, click on “Resume
Builder”, click on “Login”, and enter your SSN and password.

4C - Scroll to the bottom of the “Registration Page” and click “Next”.

4D - Click on “ANSWER” and then click “View Resume”. This is the resume you
have on file within the Army database to be considered for positions. It must include all
required information (see step 3 above). If your resume is not there, wait another 30
minutes and check again.

4E - Carefully review your resume and make sure it is accurate and complete. If it is
cut off at the bottom, it may be longer than the 3 page limit. If there are any errors, you
must go back to the working copy of your resume in Resume Builder, make the changes,
and then resubmit the resume.

4F - If your resume is accurate, print a copy for your records. It is recommended

you keep an electronic copy of your resume for future reference. Your Army resume will
be deleted after one year if it has not been updated or if you have not self-nominated for a
job.
