Cold War DBQ 4

a i) Both Northern sides of Korea and Vietnam was a communist country and both
Southern side of Korea and Vietnam were a capitalist country. With reference to
Source A, it mentioned that North Korea was controlled by Chinese forces which was
communism and the South Korea was controlled by the US and UNO forces which
was capitalism. With reference to Source B, it mentioned that the communist supply
route is from the North Vietnam to the South Vietnam which means the communists
of North Vietnam want to attack the capitalists of South Vietnam. It shows that both
Northern sides of Korea and Vietnam was a communist country and both Southern
side of Korea and Vietnam were a capitalist country.

a ii) No, the political condition of Korea remained unchange but Vietnam was
reunited under communist rule by 1980. With reference to my own knowledge, Korea
was still divided into the communist North Korea and the capitalist South Korea in
1980 as neither communism nor capitalism had won in the Korean War in 1953. Yet,
the South Vietnam was finally defeated by the North Vietnam in the Vietnam War in
1975 so the whole Vietnam was controlled by the communists after the war. It shows
that Korea did not have any changes of her political condition but Vietnam was
reunited under communist rule by 1980.

b) To a small extent that Source A and B adequately reflect the features of the Cold
War.

Source A reflects the feature about the local military conflicts of the Cold War. With
reference to Source A, it mentioned that the North and South Korea were separated
along the 38th parallel. North Korea was controlled by the Chinese forces which was
communism and South Korea was controlled by the US and UNO forces which was
capitalism. It shows that Source A reflects the feature about the local military conflicts
of the Cold War and the Chinese supported the North Korea when the US supported
the South Korea.

Source B also reflects the feature about the local military conflicts of the Cold War.
With reference to Source B, it mentioned that the communist supply route was from
North Vietnam to South Vietnam that’s mean the communists of North Vietnam
wanted to attack the capitalists of South Vietnam. It shows that Source B reflects the
feature about the local military conflicts of the Cold War and the communists
supported the North Vietnam when the capitalists supported the South Vietnam.

Yet, Source A and B do not reflect other features of the Cold War.

With reference to my own knowledge, the heavy use of propaganda is one of the
features of the Cold War. During the Cold War, both communism and capitalism made
great use of propaganda to promote and generate support for their own political
system. Also, both communism and capitalism used propaganda to attack that of the
other. They used every form of media for propaganda, such as radio, books and
posters. For example, the US Voice of America made by the US in 1942 and the
USSR Radio Moscow made by the USSR in 1929. Both of them played the role of a
propaganda weapon in the fight against others political system. It shows that the great
use of propaganda by both communism and capitalism was one of the features of the
Cold War.

The stopping of all kinds of communication is one of the features of the Cold War.
During the Cold War, all kinds of trade and cultural exchanges between the capitalist
and the communist blocs were terminated. For instance, the capitalist countries
boycotted the Moscow Olympics in 1980. Moreover, the USSR was especially
anxious to prevent the people of its bloc from going over to the capitalist countries.
Therefore, the USSR tightened all kinds of controls and no contacts with the West
were allowed to make sure communication was stopped between the people of the
East and West Germany. For example, the USSR constructed the Berlin Wall in order
to separate the East Germany from the West Germany in 1961 to 1989. It shows that
the stopping of all kinds of communication between the communist and the capitalist
countries is one of the features of the Cold War.
