12 TOP TIPS

Draw dark to light but not everyone does it this way


Draw larger shapes first
Push and pull the charcoal, reevaluate and readjust
Go darker than you feel you should
Draw what you see, not what you think you see.
Make every stroke count, don’t get sloppy or trance like
Look for the hidden gems in the shadows, like reflected lights of the chin and nose.
Go for strong tonal values
Double check using a phone or mirror
Think ahead, especially if you are going to need to lighten areas
Keep the focus and don’t overdo the detail
Sleep on it if it’s not coming together. Creativity is a difficult process
