Abstract
The objective of this study was prepared to with temporary hair dye gel with herbal pigment.
Herbal colors used in this study were obtained from ethanol and water extracts of dried turmeric, heartwood
of sappan, henna, dried blue pea and dried rosella. The prepared formulation was subjected to physical
characterization and physical-chemistry assessment such as its pH and accelerated stability with heating and
freezing-thaw cycle. Herbal gels showed good stability after 2 4 hours in heating-cycle and after 2 4 hours in

the freezing-thaw cycle. In addition, they did not show difference in pH value except for dried rosella extract
gel. An efficiency of herbal hair gel and commercial hair gel in the gray-hair piece presented herbal hair gel
less efficiency than commercial gel. This result showed that temporary herbal dyes gel act through dye
deposition on cuticles, but commercial hair gel may penetrate a little into the cortex.

Introduction
Human scalp hair play an important role in social with pronounced differences between ages
and sexes. Hair coloring product are widely used both by men and women to alter natural hair color.
p-Phenylenediamine (PPD) are widely used in hair dye but their toxicity is not well established. The natural
dyes are known to offer non-toxic. There for, natural hair dyes formulations are based on non-toxic with
colorants being obtained from natural source. In this presenting context, colorant extract of from dried
turmeric, heartwood of sappan, henna, dried blue pea and dried rosella were prepared. The hair gel products
were controlled and developed including stability evaluation.
Methodology
1. Preparation of dye herbal.
The natural colorants were obtained from dried turmeric, heartwood of sappan, henna, dried
blue pea and dried rosella. Then, they were extracted as following methods.
1.1) Turmeric (10 g) was macerated in ethanol (100 ml) for three days. After evaporation, the
crude colorant extract was obtained.
1.2) Heartwood of sappan, henna, dried blue pea and dried rosella (10 g) were macerated in
ethanol (100 ml) for three days. After filtration, the aqueous solution of natural colorants was obtained.

2. Preparation of hair dye gel from dye herbal.

HPMC (2 g) was mixed with 30 ml of 95% ethyl alcohol, 50 ml of propylene glycol.
Then Propylene glycol and 100 ml of distilled water were added and stirred. Finally, 0.5 ml of Bronidox L
then and 0.17 ml of Triethanoamine were added and stirred it until it become sticky.
3. Test the effectiveness of hair dye gel from dye herbal.
3.1) Test of colorants and pH were measured using ColorAssist application and pH meter,
respectively.
3.2) Hair dyeing gels were accelerated stability with heating and freezing-thaw cycle. The gel
packaged in a container was stored at 10°C for 24 hours and then stored in ± 45 °C for 24 hours. After that,
the appearance of the gel was observed.
3.3) Effectiveness of the hair dyeing gel. The grey natural hair (3 inch, 1 g) was treated with hair
gel (1 g) in 60 min. Then, it was blow dry and monitored by microscope. Then, hair was rinsed with
shampoo and water blow dried and color recorded. Then test the color durability of it with washing it off.
The process can be done by dyeing a part of grey hair, 3 inches long in length, 1 gram in weight with 1 gram
of each gel formats. Let the gel be absorbed into the hair (apply the gel from the hair root to the end). Leave
it for 60 minutes then blow dry it. Observe the result.
Results, Discussion and Conclusion
1. Preparation of colorant extracts
The herbal was macerated in water and ethanol for natural colorant extraction. The colorants extract
was mixed in gel base. The physical appearance and colorants of 5 herbal extracts was examinated as show
in Figure 1.

2. Physical test of hair dye gel
According to pH and stability is an influence factor on cosmetic products, the pH and stability of
gel preparation was examinated as shown in Table 1.

3. Efficiency of hair dye gel and commercial gel
The grey hair was stained with herbal colorant. The stained hair was color recorded using
microscope as showed in Figure 2.
An efficiency of herbal hair gel and commercial hair gel in the gray-hair piece presented herbal hair
gel less efficiency the commercial gel. This result showed that temporary herbal dyes gel act through dye
deposition on cuticles, but commercial hair gel may penetrate onto cortex.
