Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: All About Grammar

Grade Level(s)/Content Area: 2nd Grade
Content Standard Addressed: ELAGSE2L1. Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English
grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
Technology Standard Addressed: 6. Technology operations and concepts Students demonstrate a sound
understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations. 7b. Use technology to design and implement
a variety of formative and summative assessments that accommodate learner needs, provide timely feedback
to students and inform instruction.
Overarching Question: Can you distinguish between a noun, verb, and an adjective?
Selected Technology Tool:
☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:
☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☒ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☐ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity: Students will have learned about the different aspects that make up English grammar
(nouns, verbs, adjectives, proper nouns, adverbs, etc). This SRT activity will be introduced after the many
lessons that have been taught to review over all aspects of grammar and to formally assess their knowledge
of grammar.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: Students will complete the 30 question Kahoot
that will cover the aspects of grammar. The teacher will allow students to complete the Kahoot on their own
Student Response and Assessment Tools
and will track their answers at the end of the Kahoot to see what students need more support or what topic
needs to be covered more before moving on. The materials that will be needs for this are student’s
computers or tablets.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (7-10). If you
cannot provide one or two critical thinking questions in your assessment, please list a question or two you
would want students to provide an open response to below. Use your Bloom’s terms to design the
question(s):

Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not? I will pre-select correct answers because it will show students if they got it right or wrong at
that moment and will allow them to see where they made a mistake. I will display and go over the correct
answers at the end of the SRT activity because I want to correct any common mistakes/misconceptions that
my students may be making.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity? How will the data be used? After the SRT activity is
completed, I will use the data to see what needs to be gone over again as a class whole, what students may
need extra support in these areas if it is a small amount of students that are missing the questions, and what I
need to do for the next instructional steps. This activity is going to be used a pre-test, so I will take the data
from here to focus on areas that need to be taught over more before the summative test.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. I have never used a Kahoot or any student response
tool that gives me immediate feedback before. I think these tools are very beneficial to have in the class
because it allows the teacher to give their students effective feedback. What I hope to learn from this activity
is finding a formal way to assess my students that will help them perform well in their summative
assessments.
Reflective Practice: After designing this lesson idea, I believe this activity could impact student learning by
allowing them to test their knowledge over the content we have been learning. Students can then see for
themselves how they perform and what they need to work on to improve their knowledge. It also impacts
student learning because students are able to receive immediate effective feedback from their teacher to
know what they need to fix to succeed. I designed this lesson activity as a wrap up activity before the end of
unit test so I think this is a good activity for students to engage in and to fix any last minute misunderstanding
before their test.
