SUMMARY OF THE TOPIC:

A strike is a pause from work by a number of employees for the purpose of enforcing certain
demands from the employer. The main purpose of a strike is to secure demands which those who strike
try to obtain through a suspension of work, both by refusing to work themselves, and by attempting to
prevent others from occupying the positions temporarily vacated.

The intention of the strikers is not to quit their work to seek employment somewhere else but
to get back to their jobs once they secured what they demanded from their employer. The employer
usually desires the strikers to return to work for him.

There are many different types of strikes, namely: sit-down strike, general strike, sympathy
strike, unfair labor practice, economic strike, wild cat strike, slow down, and recognition strike. People
who join these various types of strikes usually are employees employed in commercial, industrial and
agricultural enterprises, government employees in the civil service, supervisory personnel, and aliens
with valid working permits. Those who are prohibited to join legitimate labor organizations are
managerial employees, member of cooperatives, and members of the armed forces of the Philippines,
Philippines National Police and Firemen.

Strike is a very powerful weapon for employee to get their demand. It is used by people in hope
of change and improvement. Although strikes may bring improvement, it is not guaranteed. Strikes can
be very harmful and destructive. The right to strike is integral to the process of wage bargaining in an
industrial economy.

Since strikes can’t be banned because it is part of human rights and democracy, laws are
implemented to ensure that the employees are treated fairly and justly. There are also laws for the
protection of employers.

REACTION/COMMENTS:

There are many reasons why workers go on strike. Whatever the reason may be, it will be
because employees want change and improvement. In the labor sector, strikes occur because of
dissatisfaction with company policy, salary incentive problems, hour of works and rest interval, leaves
with wages and holidays, and other reasons. In the government, one of the reasons why people go on
strike is when they feel the leader doesn’t do its job properly. Regardless if the reason of the strike is
good, the employer and the company itself may be put in jeopardy, and as a result, affects the rest of
the work force, even those who are not participating in the strike. Strikes, when it occur, must be settled
as soon as possible because the longer it gets, the greater the damage it can case our country. To the
people on strike, they are sacrificing their means of survival in hopes of an improvement in their
situation.

And despite the existence of laws protecting the employees and employers from strike, strike
still occur; there are still employees who are treated badly by their employers. Whatever laws that we
come up with to ensure that there will be no more strikes, it won’t work unless employers and
employees alike start living by the principle of charity and concern for each other.

REFLECTION/LEARNING:

In an employee-employer relationship, the employer has much more power. This makes any
negotiations favour the employer before negotiations even begin. Employees join together so they can
combine their influence to level the conditions for negotiations.

In order to ensure good working conditions in the work force, the employer and the employees
should work together for the success of the business. The employer needs the employees in order for
the production of his business, and the employees need the employer for their basic needs. To prevent
any conflict from either of them, they need to communicate any discrepancies they may have with each
other so that it can be resolved before it gets any bigger resulting to damages to both the employer and
employees
