A Passenger ship is a ship which carries more than twelve passengers.

A Tanker is a cargo ship constructed or adapted for the carriage in bulk of liquid cargoes of an
inflammable nature.

A Cargo Ship is any ship which is not a passenger ship.

A fishing vessel is a vessel used for catching fish, whales, seals, walrus or other living resources of the
sea.

A nuclear ship is a ship provided with a nuclear power plant.

Bulk carrier means a ship which is constructed generally with single deck, top-side tanks and hopper side
tanks in cargo spaces, and is intended primarily to carry dry cargo in bulk, and includes such types as ore
carriers and combination carriers. (SOLAS IX/1.6).

Bulk carrier means a ship which is intended primarily to carry dry cargo in bulk, including such types as
ore carriers and combination carriers. (SOLAS XII/1.1)

General cargo ship: A ship with a multi-deck or single-deck hull designed primarily for the carriage of
general cargo. (MEPC.1/Circ.681 Annex)

Deadweight is the difference in tonnes between the displacement of a ship in water of a

specific gravity of 1.025 at the draught corresponding to the assigned summer freeboard and the

lightweight of the ship.

Lightweight is the displacement of a ship in tonnes without cargo, fuel, lubricating oil, ballast

water, fresh water and feedwater in tanks, consumable stores, and passengers and crew and their

effects.
Subdivision length (Ls) of the ship is the greatest projected moulded length of that part of the

ship at or below deck or decks limiting the vertical extent of flooding with the ship at the deepest

subdivision draught.

Permeability (µ) of a space is the proportion of the immersed volume of that space which can

be occupied by water.

Trim is the difference between the draught forward and the draught aft, where the draughts

are measured at the forward and aft perpendiculars respectively.

Machinery spaces are spaces between the watertight boundaries of a space containing the

main and auxiliary propulsion machinery, including boilers, generators and electric motors primarily

intended for propulsion.

Weathertight means that in any sea conditions water will not penetrate into the ship.

Watertight means having scantlings and arrangements capable of preventing the passage of

water in any direction under the head of water likely to occur in intact and damaged conditions. In

the damaged condition, the head of water is to be considered in the worst situation at equilibrium,

including intermediate stages of flooding
