Reflexology
2nd EDITION
H A N D S ( PA L M A R S U R FA C E )
• Reflexology is the science that deals with the principle that there are areas on the feet
and hands that correspond to the major glands and organs of the body
1
• It is based on the principle that there are numerous energy pathways that travel to
1
1 every organ of the body and have endings in many locations just below the skin
surface (primarily in the hands and feet)
1 • The techniques of reflexology involve massaging these endings (or reflex points) to
4 improve energy flow in order to treat illness and alleviate pain in organs elsewhere on
3 4 the pathway
• By stimulating and applying pressure to the feet or hands, increased circulation and
2 promotion of specific bodily and muscular functions will occur
• Reflexologists view the feet and hands as a mirror image of the body
5 6
7 • Reflexology is both a science and an art
2 7 1
8 • As a science, it requires the skill and knowledge of the practitioner
13 1
2 9 • As an art, it requires the dedication and love of the practitioner
11
12
• There are several benefits of reflexology
16 10 • Reflexology gently nudges the body towards better functioning by improving
19
17 lymphatic drainage and venous circulation, simulation to the nerve pathways, and
20 21 muscle relaxation
14 18
• While historically reflexology has been found to have a positive affect on the body
24 suffering from a wide variety of chronic problems, it is not a panacea for all ills
26 • Reflexology is not a substitute for medical treatment but can be used as a
22 27
complement to any type of medical approach or therapy
29 • It can also be incorporated into an overall healthy lifestyle which includes attention to
25 30 34 diet, moderate exercise, and different forms of stress reduction and relaxation

LEFT HAND RIGHT HAND • There is evidence that in most
ancient cultures there was a
tradition of working on the feet
to help the body balance itself
• A pictograph was discovered in
an ancient Egyptian physician's
tomb that suggested reflexology
was practiced around 2300 BC;
several examples have been cited
in Asia as well
• The scientific basis to reflexology
begins in the 1890s when
knighted research scientist and
1 1 1 1 medical doctor, Sir Henry Head,
1 1 demonstrated the neurological
relationship that exists between
12 12 the skin and the internal organs
2
• Nobel prize winner Sir Charles
3 2 Sherrington proved that the

adjusts to a stimulus when it is
10 applied to any part of the body
7 7 • Around the same time in
11
Germany, Dr. Alfons Cornelius
observed pressure to certain spots
triggered muscle contractions,
changes in blood pressure, and
8 8
variation in temperature and
moisture, as well as directly
affecting the “physic processes”

physicians, Dr. William Fitzgerald
and Dr. Joe Shelby Riley of the
1920s and on that of
physiotherapist Eunice D.

BENEFITS OF REFLEXOLOGY
1
• Reduces stress and induces relaxation
• Most people who try reflexology for the first time find it
2 far more relaxing than a general body massage
2
• Improves circulation; this allows the body to receive the
3 nutrients carried in blood and eliminates the waste
products more effectively
• Helps the body remove toxins; the body has methods
4 other than the circulatory system for removing waste
5 5 7
6
products (for example, the lymphatic system and the
digestive system)
7
7 • Revitalizes energy; it opens the pathways to increasing
the energy levels and renewing us – immediately after
11 11 the treatment and for several days afterwards
